Politics › Re: Low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) In Southeastern States: A Cause For Alarm by patrick89(m): 11:06pm On Jun 06, 2017 |
davear: Its no news that the Southeastern states has a very low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) when compared to other regions and the reasons are not far fetched. FG might have its share of blames but we need to look inside, identify our problems and solve them ourselves. The main culprits are: 1) Our leaders 2) Supporters of these leaders (both offline and online Media Crew) 3) Silence of our intellectuals and technocrats Lets discuss these problems at the state level.
Enugu ( 2016 IGR- 14billion) Before Ugwuanyi took over from Sullivan Chime, the IGR of Enugu state between 2013-2014 was 19billion but by 2016-2017 it has dropped to 14billion, while at thesame period the IGR of Ogun state rose from 18billion in 2013-2014 to 72billion by 2016-2017. There is no other person to blame than Ugwuanyi who has failed to attract or develop investment opportunities in Enugu state. Right now Enugu cannot compete with kaduna and kano states in terms of IGR. Funny enough when you highlight these problems online, his media crew, kinsmen and 042 faithfuls will attack you, you can confirm that in Enugu threads/forums.
Anambra ( 2016 IGR- 14billion) When the "light of the nation" posts threads of Obiano signing MOU and commisioning factories, one would think that this state generates an IGR comparable to Lagos but alas it can only generate 14billion which is a slight improvement from 11billion it generated in 2013-2014. The state is blessed with intellects, politicians, billionaires and business men yet it is not industrialized. Anambrarians are quick to argue that the state offers a low-tax-scheme to indegious companies which I cannot verify for now, regardless it does not mean that Kwara state (with all due respect) should generate more we do. The state has the political strenght and population for masive industrialization yet no massive project/scheme is ongoing.
Abia (2016 IGR- 12billion) A trip to abia state, Aba in particular will convince you of the enermous potentials abia state has. The human labour, skills and raw talents are there but unfortunately they are not developed to generate enough income for the state and country. The infrastructural and state government support are not there; the streets and market places are rowdy, roads are bad, no pedestrian sidewalks. Even if the FG has overlooked us, the state government can harness energy from within to spark development and industrilize itself. The past two Orji's have failed in this area, hopefully ikpeazu sees this and work aggresively.
Imo (2016 IGR- 5billion) The situation in Imo state is a classical example of human capital flight "brain drain". Imo state has always lead the way in number of Jamb applicants, one of the top 3 Nigerian states in literacy level, highest number of civil servants as of 2015, top 3 in number of university graduates, but with all these educational and human capital prowess the states IGR is only comparable to taraba state- a northeastern region ravaged by boko haram. Its either the state leaders are siphoning money (through tax leakages) or there are no industial growth in the state. I once saw a thread were an Imolite was boasting that the state has the highest number of hotels in Nigeria (bar Lagos). Maybe if we focus on industries, then the human capital flight which has seen smart imolites leave the state will stop. Unfortunately the problem might continue if Rochas manages to install his candidate in the next gubernatorial elections.
Ebonyi ( 2016 IGR- 2billion) Now thats a whimsical revenue, and to imagine that this state generated 11billion in 2014 makes it look more suspicious. Umahi obviously has some questions to answer with the drastic fall in revenue of his state, while other states were experiencing growths. It even seems like this governor had hired his own media crew to propagate false non-existing half baked projects. They started with an " airconditioned" stadium/event centre, followed by concrete roads (by taking pictures of one road from different angles) and non-existing water projects. Last week a journalist was beaten up for trying to reveal the true state of ebonyi in his facebook profile. To imagine that this state has massive potentials in agricultre and solid mineral developments, one can only wonder what is realy wrong with the present leaders and what the past leaders were doing. This state also has the least literacy rate in southeast yet we cant see any blue print in its educational sector, nor have we heard of any educational related activity from this our salt state
Although southeasterners are quick to argue that there are no "optimally functional ports" in the eastern region but neither are there ports in the northwestern are northcentral regions which has overtaken us in terms of IGR. There are thousand and one setups and projects that does reqiure port proximities (or import-export base commodity) and will still generate massive revenue for the region and more importantly improve our Human Development Index (another topic that will be discussed) Lets look inside and hold our leaders responsible and make them accountable to us.

Ogun state continues to witness an influx of SE almajiris, leading to a population explosion that your entire region combined has yet to witness inspite of all your empty noises. Look here, it's not about noise making and chest beating. The indices are there. You guys are simply not viable, which explains why you all have to leave that god-forsaken erosion ravaged region. Look at the data below and explain to me why Ogun 'ghost state' has a larger registration than all your states? It's this sort of data that serious investors (including your own wealthy kinsmen) consult before making decisions. Even Delta and Edo are more viable and have a larger population and market than any SE state, upon all the noises you guys make. Sorry but available data does not support any of your hype and chestbeating. taa gbafuo see afonja trying to hobnob with onye Anambra like me,egwu ana atukwa GI. having transversed across Ogun state, it is pointless arguing with you on this, I know you guys very well, oluwole expert, they can manufacture figures to score cheap point, who is even sure the said amount published is the true state of the igr? since afonja took I've NBS phony figures have been coming out from there, whereas the reality on ground is showing nothing, if truly Ogun make that huge some what have they achieve with it? all the substandard roads in Ogun state, abandoned bridges are still untouched, even the schools are all shanties, no part of Anambra state still have the type of school in Ogun state. Politics › Will I Make A Good Nigerian President? I Am Not Sure Because Of This Reason by patrick89(op): 7:57am On May 10, 2017 |
Will I make a good Nigerian President? I am not sure because of this reason By Azuka Onwuka If I have the opportunity to govern Anambra State, for example, I am 120% certain that I will make such a mark that even the best Anambra State governor will be envious of my achievements. The reason is simple: Anambra State towns and villages have similar values in life. When you start a policy that agrees with their view, most people will support you. I will not be afraid of taking radical actions that will move the state forward for fear of not offending some sections. If Anambra were an independent nation, it would be easy to propel it to greatness because the people love excellence and have similar views of life. This is true of many other states in Nigeria. But if I get the opportunity to govern Nigeria, I cannot guarantee if I will excel despite all my hard work and good intentions. The reason is simple. With the exception of the gay issue, which Nigerians from North and South as well as Christians and Muslims agree on, there is no other issue Nigerians agree upon. If, for example, I push for restructuring, one section of the country will criticise me, while the other part will hail me. If I push for quota system, one part will hail me, while the other will demonise me. If I push for compulsory education or push for punishment for parents who refuse their children to go to school, one part will ask for my head on a platter, while the other part will applaud me. If I push for religion to be divorced from governance, one section will hail me while the other will condemn me. Any appointment I make will be x-rayed, dissected and interpreted as pro-East, or pro-South or pro-Christianity or an attempt to please the North or Muslims so that they will like me. Any action I take to move the country forward and pull it out of mediocrity and retrogression will be resisted by one part of the nation and hailed by the other part. Riots will break out and people will be killed so as to ensure that such policies are not implemented. If you want peace to reign, you just let the status quo remain. And allowing the status quo to remain is equal to allowing the mediocrity, backwardness, and decay to continue. So anybody hoping that a leader will emerge one day who will transform Nigeria is living in a fool's paradise. Structured as it is today, Nigeria can NEVER progress, no matter the good intentions and efforts of any leader. It is not lack of optimism or a curse but simple reality. The North and the South have opposite and contrastive values on all issues in life except the gay issue. Corruption is a big problem in Nigeria but it is not the most critical issue. Interestingly, something is fuelling the corruption as well as the non-patriotism, mediocrity, stagnation, backwardness, laziness, decay, intolerance, constant killings and lack of value for human lives bedevilling the nation. If you want to drastically reduce corruption, you must first kill why is causing it. If we don't solve the fundamental problem causing the problems, we will continue hoping and praying in vain for some ruler to emerge one day and transform the nation. |
