The future is ICT. GIS is more needed in oil and gas sector while Computer science can work any where. I work in oil and gas industry and suprisely Computer science graduated are even doing the job of GIS. However all depends on your vision and not your ambition in life

what do you really what to achieve. I encourage you to start with Visual studio 05/08 IDE (since VB 6.0 is outdated) and connect to Access or SQL server databases. However start with understanding Database designs, normalization, SQL and relational database management system.
