Fifteen schoolchildren kidnapped by gunmen earlier this week in Aba, Nigeria have been released unharmed after an operation by security services, a senior police officer said today.
“All the 15 schoolchildren that were abducted on Monday have now regained freedom. They were rescued by a combined team of army and police security services late last night in the forest of Ogwe-Asa in Abia state,” Jonathan Johnson, the state’s police commissioner, said.

All the children were in the southern town of Aba, where they were believed to have been held since gunmen hijacked their bus as they were on the way to school, he said.

“No arrests have been made yet and no ransom was paid to the best of my knowledge,” Johnson said.

Hundreds of soldiers in armoured vehicles sealed off the town on the fringes of the Niger Delta in a security sweep.

Kidnapping for ransom is common in and around the Niger Delta, an impoverished area despite being home to Africa’s largest oil and gas industry.

However, the abduction of a large group of childre

http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/eat-beef-dodo-is-for-fools/

I was headed home back from Seun’s place, which was my last port of call for the day, hungry and craving some home cooked Bumshasha. My Ajala-travels-the-world-steez wasn’t yielding any beta result oh jare, so I just kept on strolling with a rather steady gait, trying very hard to make sure my stomach doesn’t send to my legs, signals, causing it to outrun an imaginary Forrest Gump and betray my hard-earned fineboy-ism; Sunshades ‘gummed’ to my face, earplugs plugged in, left hand clutching my BlackBerry in my pocket and slightly mouthing loudly the words to some new material I had just downloaded off the internet, I continued…er…strolling the six streets and four shortcuts to a decent meal. Three tracks later, I remembered Saliu’s house was two shops away, I smiled and walked on smartly hoping to mass-murder the worms having one kain dance rehearsal in my stomach.

Of course I met Saliu who didn’t notice my entrance maybe ‘cuz he was engaged in a shouting match with three shirtless dudes laughing throatily and effortlessly overshadowing the music reverberating off the radio’s speakers. I let them have fun as I went into the dark kitchen (thanks to PHCN) to help myself to some Beans and Dodo, when one of these really happy dudes pointed at me and screamed: “Dodo is for fools!”

I was contemplating forcing my fork down his oesophagus when Saliu quipped: “But Muphasa Modo is a Amalafucka shaa oh! which one be dodo is for fools again? I’m sure he was referring to Sinzu.” READ MORE: http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/eat-beef-dodo-is-for-fools/

Celebrities / Nigeria Entertainment And The Growth Of Stand-up Comedy. by pckid: 1:22pm On Sep 27, 2010
http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/nigeria-entertainment-and-the-growth-of-stand-up-comedy/

The comedy industry in Nigeria is fast-becoming a productive end to meeting other ends. This has become evident albeit popular on television or film, and in today’s sold-out stand-up comedy shows. The manner of wave-making by youthful geniuses at the art and act of jocular remarks is in itself, inspiring.

The truth however is that one has to be richly endowed either physically to elicit hilarity, or naturally gifted with plethora of yarn to inspire crowd to laughter.

The word comedy lends from a greek word, Komoidia, which is a general discourse intended to amuse. In the Athenian democracy, public opinion of voters was remarkably influenced by political satire performed by comic poets at the theaters. Originally of a theatrical genre, it was simply described as a dramatic performance which pits two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Northrop Frye – a Canadian literary critic and theorist, famously depicted these two opposing sides as “Society of Youth” and “Society of the Old”.

Today, comedies are mostly non-theatrical in the sense of the academe, i.e. without dramatic performances on stage reflecting characters in societies with a blend of elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, but have grown largely into a monologue of smart jibes, before an audience.

The gratification for the comedian here is not in the audience’ critical perception of message, after all, there happens to be no true substance modeled into the audience participant, rather the single purpose of eliciting laughter or smiles over jokes, or vulgar gibe. The old trend of theatrical performances, solicits audiences participation by indirectly appealing to the intellect, emotional, and physical via theatrical dialogue and not monologue.

These messages which are typical of stereotypes, and based on evidences of the real world, are highly venerable. They do impact teachings in morals in the end, and discipline too. It should be noted however that although the term comedy is broadly in use for stand-up comedy in Nigeria, both are unique.

However, times have changed and so have needs too especially in the age of today’s media technology where cultural influences have strongly redefined how we view societies, needs or tastes; comedy (now inspired by ‘stand-up comedy’) has become debasing in style and rhetoric. Here, there are no morals but loosely woven jokes that retard the true sense of ‘amusing agon or conflict’.

Nonetheless it is accepted by all; in any case http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/nigeria-entertainment-and-the-growth-of-stand-up-comedy/

The paragraph read: “Our country is at the threshold of a new era; an era that beckons for a new kind of leadership; a leadership that is uncontaminated by the prejudices of the past; a leadership that is committed to change; a leadership that reinvents government, to solve the everyday problems that confront the average Nigerian.” and in 2006, Atiku said: “Today, as we stand on the thresh, http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/goodluck-jonathan-stole-from-atiku-abubakar/

Literature / Africa At 50. by pckid: 11:48am On Sep 18, 2010
http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/africa-at-50/

There is no better time to reflect on independence than now. The countdown has already begun-in a couple of weeks, Nigeria will be fifty. Indeed the end of this decade has seen many other African countries achieve this same feat. The turn of the 1950’s down to 1960 formed the turning point of our continent’s history when African countries began attaining independence one after the other.

In The fate of Africa, Martin Meredith begins by describing how communities existed before colonisation and the scramble for Africa. He describes how the boundaries we see today didn’t exist before colonisation. We see how smaller communities were merged by the colonialists with larger ones for ease of administration, and how others metamorphosed into new communities as a result of such merging instead of managing the millions of tribes and ethnic affiliations and communities that dotted the landscape of Africa. For example, Nigeria had over 250 ethnic groups and in Congo, Belgian officials identified 6,000 chiefdoms on their arrival. Perhaps this partitioning is where the problems began for Africa because over there somewhere in Britain or Belgium the colonialists blindly carved up territories, oftentimes tearing a single community into several like in Somaliland and brought together rival groups, like Bunganda and Bunyoro in Uganda into a single territory without necessarily visiting the place or learning of the cultural and social realities of the place. Muslim communities were also joined with non Muslim ones which they hitherto had no dealings with as was the case in Nigeria and Chad. They used maps, longitudes and latitudes to do the partitioning- the people that were partitioned and divided were not always taken into consideration, http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/africa-at-50/
Celebrities / The BANK Worth Of Nollywood’s Top Actresses. by pckid: 10:57am On Sep 18, 2010
http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/a-shot-at-the-worth-of-nollywoods-top-actresses/

From the 80’s till half-way through the 90’s, nearly every household in Africa watched Western and Asian movies, no wonder stars like Eddie Murphy, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee, Anorld Schwartzenegger, Amitah Bachan, Jackie Chan, Grace Jones, Cynthia Rotrock, Julia Roberts and many others became more popular among the African youths than the African presidents.

As millions of Africans read about their life styles especially how much money they make, these stars have been exalted to become demi-gods. But with the arrival of Nollywood in the early 90’s and the rising profile of some of Nollywood stars in the late 90’s, everything changed. Nollywood fastly became the talk of the day amongst African youths and many across other continents.

Many families stayed glued to Nollywood movies more than they did to Hollywood and Bollywood films. One of the things that added glamour to Nollywood was the beautiful faces of sisters in the baby Nigerian movie industry that was soon to take the world by storm.

Nollywood sisters are talented, elegant, smart, and beautiful. They have indeed made africa proud. They have come a long way and have shown that there is still something magical and good about Africa. Most of them came from humble backgrounds and have today become role models to millions of youths and fans around the globe. They rose in style like the sound of the rain. Although this may appear hard to believe, most of our nollywood sisters today ride around with bodyguards and tinted glass cars. Why? Because they can no longer walk freely at the airports, in the market places, banks or churches without causing commotion, eyes staring at them, or people chasing after them to take pictures with them or get their autographs.

Such was the case when fans chased and surrounded Mercy Johnson while she was on vacation in South Africa 2008. Another instance was when fans who came out in numbers to welcome Stella Damasus at the airport in Trinidad and Tobago started shedding tears while calling her name when she was coming out from the airport. It came to a point that she started crying herself. It was at that point that she understood the effect and impact Nollywood has created around the world. Not many Nollywood sisters and stakeholders would have anticipated that this would have come this far. All of a sudden they have woken to the reality of being celebrities on a continent where no one ever im,  http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/a-shot-at-the-worth-of-nollywoods-top-actresses/

http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/a-ruggedmans%e2%80%99-ordeal-with-the-nines/

Micheal Stevens a.k.a Ruggedman would on the 20th of September 2010 add another year to his roughly mid thirty something years. Never would he have thought that he’d receive a diss track/album as his birthday gift from a colleague that once called him boss, a colleague that championed the hit single off his sophomore album hailing him ‘ruggedy baba the opomulero’ too bad! The Alapomeji camp just released a diss track titled ‘Talk am listening’ which featured Seriki.

The last time I checked Micheal never had it well with the Nine’s, first was the ego battle with erstwhile lyricist Modenine and off recent the very famous phone conversation with 9ice about the rumours of him (Rugged) sleeping with his ex-wife. It’s safe to say the Ruggedman has been doomed by the 9’s. The off recently quiet but twitter vibrant Micheal has evidently run out of ideas as to boosting his musical career even after putting out two singles from his much talked about last album which has taken longer than expected to drop. Teaming up with the Loopy crew, putting Ice Prince on a track and doing all that can be done to impress on the ‘She n my swagga’ track with production from Sossick, the ruggedman still couldn’t make things work, the best thing that has happened to him in recent times has been hosting the Star Quest show and starring in the Glo blackberry advert.

The past few years have not been too impressive for the rapper in the Music Industry from the indirect disses to Modenine urging him to mention his name to the known talking to you featuring Banky W where modenine took a direct jab at him with the famous punchline “you are not a father you’ve got intellect myopia, when I diss a baba its not Ethiopia” followed by the indirect reply by ruggedman in Banging, to the popular death blow part one where the Baba lost any lyrical credibility that he ever had.

The Discord with 9ice began with rumours of him been the cause of 9ice’s broken marriage and also the character portrayed in the song once beaten twice shy; thought to be giving a head by his ex-wife. He thought it as a smart move to record a conversation he had with 9ice on phone, release it online to prove his innocence, but that leak was the beginning and a catalyst for this song. Talk i’m listening 9ice sang repeatedly and in the first verse Seriki whitewashed Ruggedy reiterating one of Modenine’s line in death blow where he said Ruggedman was sleeping with his dancers. Music/Radio / Ruggedman Responds To 9ice’s Diss – ‘The Battle Is Mine Says The Lord’ by pckid: 9:28pm On Sep 11, 2010

And you just wonder whether the always controversial Ruggedman is really going to wage war with 9ice. As we all know that making diss track is a second nature to Ruggedman considering the number of diss tracks under his belt (ehen, big brother and others) but for now, he has maintained his silence on the diss track. Does Ruggedy wanna let it go? or he’s got plans for 9ice?. Rugged has been updating thoughtless tweets until lately, when he replied to a tweet addressing the issue.

@Sweetness1231 wrote @ruggedybaba dehinde fjan (9ice manager) da so called wack lame, manager (more like gay lover) is onstantly instigating and making matters worse, http://questionmarkmag.com/2010/09/ruggedman-responds-to-9ices-diss-the-battle-is-mine/
