On 31st July, 2010, Mr. Ben Okakpu, a staff of AMOSCO Nig. Ltd fell from the ship JACK RYAN into the sea and has since not been rescued. The incident occurred in Akpo which is an off-shore drilling point off Port-Harcourt, which is also referred to as OML 130. Mr. Okapkpu is a graduate of mechanical engineering from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and had worked with AMOSCO for about 3 years.
Before this incident Mr. Ben Okakpu had been employed by AMOSCO Nig Ltd to work aboard a ship called JACK RYAN. The ship is owned by Transocean Ltd and is engaged in off shore oil drilling.

On the day the incident occurred Mr. Ben Okakpu fell into the sea along with two of his colleagues who are foreigners. Transocean only rescued the two expatriates while leaving Mr. Okakpu behind. These persons were rescued within 1 hour after the incident. Immediately after rescuing these two expatriates, Transocean then waited 3 hours for a helicopter to arrive before making any rescue attempt on Mr. Okakpu.

When the Okakpu family did not see their son on the date of his expected return from his off-shore post they made several frantic attempts to secure information as to his whereabouts from both Transocean Ltd and AMOSCO Ltd. All these attempts met a brick wall. During this same period several national dailies published stories in which the events of 31st July, 2010 were chronicled. This only served to fuel the anxiety of the Okakpu family as the dailies never indicated the identity of the person said to be still missing.

From the circumstances leading to the disappearance of Mr. Okakpu it would appear that Mr. Okakpu was neither provided the necessary safety gear that would have guaranteed his safety at sea nor was he given the training required to enable him survive any accident that would occur while at sea. The findings were that he had been shot to death. Dr.Moses Majekodunmi, who was the Minister of Health at the time, can confirm this. After murdering Balewa in cold blood on the Abeokuta road Ifejuana fled to Enugu because by that time it was clear that the coup had failed. Indications are rife that the only a handful of the more than 100 Presidents and Heads of State and Very Important Personalities (VIPs) invited by the federal government to witness Nigeria’s golden independence anniversary celebrations would make it.

It is gathered that the Nigerian government had through invitation letters personally signed by President Goodluck Jonathan invited more than 100 presidents and Heads of government to Abuja for the ceremonies scheduled to climax on October 1, 2010.

However, some foreign diplomats disclosed that much as their Presidents would love to attend the epochal event, heads of their home governments were however constrained by what they said was the lateness in the invitation.

Said an ambassador: “I was invited by your (Nigerian) ministry of foreign affairs only last week and they handed me the very beautiful invitation letter to my Prime Minister personally signed by President (Goodluck) Jonathan. I saw several of my colleagues there trying to get their letters, too. Problem is, you don’t invite a President four weeks to such an event. Nigeria did not just realize she would be 50 next month. Such an invitation ought to have been dispatched at least three to four months in advance to enable the invitees tidy up, that is, if they actually wish to attend.”

The diplomat conceded that they had met with the then Vice President Jonathan last year at the “Glass box” in Eagle Square, Abuja, and that he (Jonathan) had intimated them on the golden independence anniversary celebrations next (this) year.

“Yes, President Goodluck Jonathan met with us last year in that bullet-proof box in Eagle Square. At the time he was the Vice President. Late President Yar’Adua was meant to meet with us, but then his illness had begun and his vice had to do it. Then Vice President Jonathan had appealed to us to identify with Nigeria at the occasion, but it is no fault of ours that the formal invitation is coming just about a month to the event,” he offered.

The diplomat added that the lateness in dispatching the letters of invitation aside, concerns would naturally arise on the part of the countries’ presidents invited on such issues as security and logistics.

This is arguably the most popular unexpected hiphop collabo. As the title implies, we still dont understand how these two rivals reconciled and went ahead to make this track. These two rap maestros laid the foundation of rap/hiphop in nigeria amid the dominance of traditional music few years back. While this track was to make amends for their long-lived beef. Some years back, the two rap legends had a face-off on who heads the rap game in naija, a familiar case we all know with hiphop; their case likened to that of pac/biggie. While ruggedman had claimed that he redefined it, Eedris monopolized the rap industry. Some still believe that ruggedman had a chip on Eedris shoulder on why Eedris’ musical career failed. Kennis, another rival of Ruggedman might have been out of the hoop when these two rappers came together to make this unbelievable joint.

The Pulse and Busta Rhymes – Sotey (remix)
The collaboration which i still see as a bizarre coincidence had proved to many that american rappers can definitely blend with afro pop. It served as a reference point on why drake’s alleged collaboration with our psquare might not flop. For a newcomer like the pulse to have paired with a legendary rapper at the early stage of their career still amazes many. Busta spoke pidgin with his american accent in a line ‘i got to go and pray sotey‘ and sounds interesting, funny though. I know this would have got some artistes wondering why they hadn’t done something like this.

Jim Iyke and 2face – Who AmI
Jim doesnt sound like that usual guy you watch in movies, and he asks ‘who am i?, a nollywood actor of course, and not a rapper with this track, hell no. This pairing came as a shock and it was quite comical, you just laugh it off. Jim was lucky to get a humble and ‘ the always ready to collaborate’ 2face on this one. Many still believe 2face had condescended to do a song with jim, he was just too important for that. The track isn’t totally bad, what do you expect of a track that has got 2face on it. Jim took the first verse and 2face helped with the chorus and came in to sing the second verse. We wouldn’t like to see this kind of collaboration again, as it sounds disastrous for the growing music industry.

Lagbaja and Mode 9 – scream

A statement has been released following the fire that burnt down the studio that puts together the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and MTN Project Fame west Africa show. The statement issued on Monday, August 23rd read:

In spite of the mysterious fire that ravaged Ultima Studios on Sunday August 22, 2010, the company has stated that their two currently running productions WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and MTN PROJECT FAME WEST AFRICA season 3 would continue as scheduled.

A recording for WWTBAM had just ended, when crew members noticed a minor fire, late Sunday. But what started as a little ball soon turned into huge flames as extinguishers failed to contain the fire.

Staff and contestants who were housed in the Academy were promptly evacuated. There were no injuries nor lives lost. However, both the studios for WWTBAM and MTN Project Fame West Africa were badly hit and invaluable equipment lost to the inferno.
