I see nothing wrong in the gesture, election or no election. So the family that got the monies should rather not be given because election is near. Assuming its Buhari and APC that are giving out the cheques, would all of not appreciate it and still castigate the president?
Certain NYSC youths lost their lives after a certain man lost election yet till now no apologies from d camp yet people are showing hatred here.
Slow and steady is better for me pls. I have also decided....

Moneysage:
(Sorry NSEMPA for this LONG dialogue)

@pdozie: I'm afraid you're getting this a bit twisted.

Now, permit me to reiterate what oga kotlass earlier explained:

If you want to place a BUY order for ANY stock using the STOP LIMIT, you MUST place your PRICE LIMIT above the STOP price. E.g. X is trading at 2.5 and you want to BUY, your STOP PRICE could be 2.51 or 2.6 and your PRICE LIMIT could be 2.9(i.e you don't wanna buy that stock for more than 2.9)

If you want to place a SELL order for ANY stock using the STOP LIMIT, you MUST place your PRICE LIMIT below the STOP price. E.g. X is trading at 2.5 and you want to SELL, your STOP PRICE could be 2.45 or 2.40 and your PRICE LIMIT could be 2.35(i.e you don't wanna sell that stock for less than 2.35)

If memory serves me right, the position of Meritrade when we discussed this issue last is that: On the Meritrade platform, you would see 3 different types of orders (LIMIT, MARKET, STOP LIMIT). The LIMIT order was advised to be used.

Hence, if you're traveling and won't be able to monitor your portfolio, just set a LIMIT order (for BUY or SELL). E.G the limit prices of stock X above. That means you don't want Meritrade to BUY above that price nor SELL below that price. Shikena

Please, @pdozie, DELETE ABSOLUTELY the second to the last paragraph of your last post. None of kotlass, Moneysage or stockbull implied the lines of your thought.

Regards.
Dear kotlass, Moneysage & stockbull, my apologies for misrepresenting your thoughts.

@Moneysage, the Bolded actually addresses my concerns. I will stick with the LIMIT order.

I appreciate you all

Cheers

@kotlass.I got u right.it was the explanation of the flaw that I got it wrong.I had wanted to put the lower band below the stop price and upper band above the limit price.thanks
@Moneysage, @Stockbull, @Kotlass

I appreciate your responses a great lot. So it actually means when I ask my broker to buy a stock for me, he will be executing a SELL mandate. And If I ask him to sell any of my shares he is executing a BUY mandate (Hmm.. a bit confusing).
Looking at the attached screen shot from Meristem, When I want to acquire share, I chose buy and they take my money. That's why I was using it as a BUY mandate.

I lost an opportunity of selling a particular share when i travelled and had no access to internet. When I returned the share price had jumped down again. That is why I'm trying to learn how to use either LIMIT or STOP LIMIT for future.

[s]What I get afterall from the explainations is, to execute a SELL MANDATE (Buying shares at lower price), I should set both the STOP PRICE and LIMIT price to be same.
And to excute a BUY MANDATE (Sell my shares at higher price), I should a STOP PRICE no LIMIT PRICE.[/s]

I'm sorry if i seem to be dragging this as Olodo...

Guys please this question has been asked in this thread but the answer(s) were not too clear. Kindly help clarify:
Regarding STOP LIMIT, I know its used to set the price at which you want to buy/sell a stock. But lets look at the BUY/SELL scenarios:

BUY:
- Current Price = N5
Assuming I want to wait for price to drop to N4 before buying
- Price Type = STOP LIMIT
- Price Limit = N4
- STOP price = ?? (What should this be please/ or what is it?)

SELL:
- Current Price = N5
Assuming I want to wait for price to reach N7 to execute
- Price Type = STOP LIMIT
- Price Limit = N7
- STOP price = ?? (What should this be please)

Kind regards

Forget the market noise Smart traders are simply recouping their investment before the D day. Don't say you were not warned. .
So you advice we wait for the market to be bearish again before investing right?

FCMB is on 8.84% (5.8k) - 8.8% is the percentage gain. while 5.8k is the naira worth. Apply same to the other.

Guys, ure advice please:
During the bear period, I keyed into FCMB and GTB. Now looking at my portfolio (Meritrade) FCMB is on 8.84% (5.8k) and GTB 17% (4.7k).
As you can see the actual profit not high (of course due to amount of capital used to invest). My queston is: is it advised to sell now or still wait considering that there would be charges/commisions to be taken off? And also considering that the profits may erode if bears sets in again - Election fever...

Cheers

It is said that Nigerians don't read. The posts am seeing in this thread justifies that. How long will it take to read the story as published?

Meanwhile he is correct. He promised to give power attention and he did. Never said he delivered 100% power 24/7.

Pls stop portraying Nigerians as lazy or half illiterate people.

I suggest you learn how to identify the lows for equities yourself. Normally, you'll get this over time. Also, remember to understand the reason why some lows and highs happen such as the fall-out of the financial crisis starting 2008. Some of those lows caused by events like that may not happen again for a while especially in stable economies.

I know one author's work with 15 years experiences compiled here: http://tradot.com/digital/?trade-shares-safely

It might help.

Cheers!

you may need to wait till transcorp fall to say atleast #2.45 but you may be averaging down from here.
For banks, just buy when they make new time low
@gtb,zenith,fcmb,skye,sterling,at new low.
watch to pick aiico at 70kobo if possible, custodian @3.35,Nem@51kobo .
i am sceptical about ubcap cos of uninteresting results but comfortable with afriprudential because its result will be ok but it is too pricey to me.

I believe by d time banks results come into public glare, new lower prices will be set. Here is the list of banks that my intuition says will hit bottom, they are: skyebank, fbnh uba, fidelity, access(might be marginal).
But i tipped gtb, sterlingbank,Eti and stanbic to be atleast OK.
Thanks Immanuello for the advice. Is there any online sites that one can use to monitor new time lows for equities?

Sir, we should blame no one for any woeful decision (taken) arisen from individual opinions here. It is time we all need to understand that we shouldn't depend too much on anyone in this world (applicable to this market). It is very clear that even your shadow leaves you when you're in darkness. So fight your own battle and win the race! It is never too late to rewrite the strategy that works best for YOU and turn your wounds into wisdom.
From this thread, I read comments recommending some online trading platforms. I chose Meritrade and have been trading with them. Would I complain that I was misled if Meritrade plays any fast one? NO - My choice

Also on this thread, I've placed orders in the last one month over 100k based on recommended stock picks here; note that most time the 'recommender' always says he shouldn't be held liable for any misjudgement. Having bought those stocks now, if in the next 3 months I make considerable profit, would I share it with the 'recommenders'? No really. But if it is a loss, why then should I blame them? There is so much power in CHOICES. But we should learn to take repsonsiblity of our choices.

I really believe this is a good time to invest (not for JIJO though). Just got my 50k now idling and waiting for my CHOICE: DBN, FCMB, FBN or Transcorp. Will hold on till next week sha....

Mtschew.. I thought this sector has been privatised? Allow them do their business jare..

Meanwhile, I still don't get why petroleum products are still expensive in the country.

Perhaps, if they moved to step down pump price and activate our refinery(ies), PHCN would improve their services because customers can comfortably turn to the now-cheap alternate power source.
Just looking the news again, it says, "He revealed that government still owns 40 per cent equity in the privatised power sector companies and reiterated government’s determination to ensure that consumers are billed for energy consumed"

I really didn't know that till now. Interesting
PoliticsFG To End Discos Exploitation Of Consumers by pdozie(op): 12:03pm On Jan 16, 2015
In a bid to reduce the number of unmetered electricity consumers exposed to excessive estimated billing, the federal government has disclosed that it will provide one million pre-paid electricity meters for distribution in the coming months, the minister of power, Chinedu Nebo, has said.

Nebo, who disclosed this at a town-hall meeting in Abuja, yesterday, said that the gesture was part of efforts to end estimated billing served consumers by the various electricity distribution companies (Discos).

He revealed that government still owns 40 per cent equity in the privatised power sector companies and reiterated government’s determination to ensure that consumers are billed for energy consumed.

With about 50 per cent of consumers still unmetered, Nebo said, government will continue to insist that discos provide meters for customers.

“The problem is if you have no meters you are subject to estimated billing. That’s why some people may not even be happy to give you meters. But we think we should continue to insist that every consumer must be metered. When government kick starts the massive deployment of meters, estimated billing will stop,” Nebo said.

While noting that the private sector inherited an unmetered customer base that was more than 50 per cent, the minister explained that funding for the procurement of the meters have been approved by the president. He said that meters would be deployed in a couple of months after the sharing mechanism is worked out.He also lamented the level of energy theft in the country which according to him has the highest per capital electricity theft in the world.

“What I am saying is that we have thieves who steal electricity; they may be very well dressed and responsible citizens but they are thieves because they are not paying their due electricity bills,” the minister said.

Nebo disclosed that power generation is still around 4,500mw, stressing that it falls short of the country’s target even as he added that real progress is being made in the sector.
