mukina2: August 28, 2011 was the nadir of Arsene Wenger's regime at Arsenal. There is no other way to view an 8-2 disembowelling by the team that were once his club's keenest rivals. An unreal scoreline dealt out a reality check. Three games into the season, and a faint flame of hope was already extinguished. Arsenal would not be competing for the Premier League title. Poor fortune played its part, but so did some extremely poor Arsenal play.

From those depths, it is to Wenger's credit as a manager that he eventually righted the ship, and returned the club to the Champions League at the end of the season. To do so, he had to rip up his modus operandi and begin again with an almost entirely new team.

That Sunday was also a day in which Samir Nasri played his first match for Manchester City, in a 5-1 win at Tottenham. By then, Cesc Fabregas was measuring for curtains in his new Barcelona abode and Jack Wilshere was in plaster. Robin Van Persie scored one of a pair of the most meagre of consolations, at a time when questions were beginning to be asked about his own contractual situation.

The week that followed saw Wenger panic buy in the transfer market for the first time in fifteen years at Arsenal. The dealings were hit and miss, though Mikel Arteta has become a mainstay, and Per Mertesacker his best defensive organiser.

Eventually, Arsenal muddled through, as Spurs faltered and Chelsea did too, and then became distracted by their quest for the Champions League. Arsenal finished third but when Jack Wilshere finally made his first-team return - in impressively fashion - against Queens Park Rangers last week, only Aaron Ramsey, Bacary Sagna and Thomas Vermaelen remained as starters from the team-mates he played his break-out season alongside.

Just over 14 months on from that last Old Trafford visit, Arsenal are not back at United's level. A pair of defeats to Norwich City and Schalke drew lineage from a home loss to Chelsea that dampened growing excitement about the new Arsenal. The QPR win was the first clean sheet in eight games, a statistic that muffled talk about Steve Bould tightening up the defence.

For United, that last Sunday of the summer was an afternoon when everything went right. It didn't get much better for them. The early weeks of 2011-12 saw an avalanche of United goals, but also a leaking defence that would eventually cost them on their title run-in.

Sir Alex Ferguson's answer to the problem of having eventually lost the Premier League title to Manchester City was from leftfield. It was to strengthen his attacking options rather than add muscle to his midfield or defence. Shinji Kagawa is injured for the moment, but it is Van Persie who will undoubtedly take the Saturday lunchtime focus, having first made clear he felt Arsenal could not match his ambitions, and then that he saw United as the type of club he saw himself signing for when he was a boy.

That sub-plot is sure to be the headline-maker on the morning of the game. Arsenal need to prove they can live without Van Persie, United want to show that taking Arsenal's prime mover from them has further lengthened the distance between the clubs.

Manchester United player to watch: Robin van Persie. He is the man who Arsenal fans will be watching like hawks. Any touch is due to be booed by those who have travelled north. Any appreciation of the outstanding final season he enjoyed at Arsenal will be drowned out by claims of avarice, even though Wenger admitted to the AGM last week that City offered him £300,000 per week. Arsenal's skipper and remaining hope is now United's greying goal machine. He has settled in tremendously, gallingly so for an Arsenal team that struggles for goals.

Arsenal player to watch: Bacary Sagna. The understandable warm glow resulting from the return of Jack Wilshere meant that the return of another long-term absentee was largely overlooked. There were others who felt that Carl Jenkinson, so improved since he suffered the deepest of any Gunner at Old Trafford in the 8-2, was unlucky to be displaced, but Sagna came back from a broken leg as if he had never been away - quietening Junior Hoilett and overlapping down the right. He and Jenkinson may even play in tandem on Saturday, with the Frenchman on the left if Wenger does not trust Andre Santos facing Antonio Valencia.

Key battle: Tom Cleverley v Jack Wilshere. The summer of 2011 featured much discussion of two young players who represented the future of England's midfield. There was a potential for them to be the new Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, since both favour similar territory on the pitch and might even end up at cross-purposes, but injuries have curbed such talk until now. Wilshere's 65 minutes at Emirates Stadium last week reconfirmed the stratospheric expectations Arsenal fans have of him. Cleverley's foot problem, sustained against Bolton the week after the 8-2 meant he would start just one more Premier League game for the rest of the season. Now he looks to be something of a first-choice, his development slower than last season, but on an upward curve, and the two, friends off the field, now look likely to cross footballing paths after such a long wait.

Some policemen reportedly took the enforcement of the Lagos Traffic Law to the extreme on Wednesday as they allegedly beat an unidentified okada rider and stripped him in Akoka, Lagos. An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the victim was caught while riding at the junction of University Road and St. Finbarr's College Road in Akoka.

He stated that the man was plying the route oblivious that plain-clothes policemen had laid ambush in a van with registration number NPF9544B, in the area. The eyewitness said immediately the policemen saw the okada rider, they pounced on him, beat him up and later asked him to take all his clothes off.

afam4eva: Ethnicity is something that ones is born with and not something that you learn or become but religion on the other hand is something that you became or was probably passed down to you but it has not always been like that.

Whenever I see people from different religions arguing over who is right, i wonder, are these people fighting for the religion they belong to because they found themselves there.

As a Christian, i wonder what i would have been if i was born a Muslim or a Budhist. I'll probably be proclaiming that Allah is the best thing to happen to the world. If some Muslims were born Christians, they would have been preaching Jesus to whoever cares to listen.

Now, are you a Christian/Catholic or Muslim because your parents were one and you were probably born one? I guess majority of the answers will be in the affirmative. Only few people actually get to convert to another religion. You see some Christians saying that Christianity is the way thereby citing how Alhaja A converted to become a Pastor.

I'm sure Moslems also have a story of how a hardcore Pastor became an Imam. I remember i asked one Christian why he thinks Christianity is the way and he said "You'll know once you feel the Holy-spirit".

I want to imagine Moslems are still Moslems because they're also feeling something similar to the Holy spirit in their religion. If they were not benefiting anything they would have left, right?

You'll also see someone telling you that God provided the house, cars and everything that he has attained in life. Now, Atheists and people from every religion also have these things. T

here are also poor people from every religion. It now brings me back to the question "Are you part of your Region because you were born into it or because you made a conscious effort to be part of it"

semid4lyfe: An old rivalry will be rekindled when the Super Falcons of Nigeria confront their Camerounian counterparts, the Indomitable Lionesses tomorrow in their first match of the ongoing 2012 African Women Championship in Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria and Cameroun by virtue of being semi-finalists in the 2010 edition of the competition were drawn by in the preliminary round and only saw action in the final round of the Qualifiers.

The Lionesses accounted for Ghana's absence in this competition with a 9-8 aggregate win on penalty after both legs finished 1-1 apiece while Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe 6-0 on aggregate to qualify for the competition.

At the last AWC, Nigeria and Cameroun met in the semi-final with the Super Falcons inflicting a humiliating 5-1 defeat on the Camerounian ladies but some months later, the Indomitable Lionesses defeated the Nigerian gals 2-1 in Yaounde for a 3-3 aggregate and then went on to prevail via penalties to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.

Hence, the setting in Bata on Monday, when Nigeria takes on Cameroun will bear a semblance of a revenge mission as the Nigerian team will seek to avenge their ouster from the Summer Olympics while the Camerounians will want to defeat the Nigerians again to prove their superiority and that the victory in the Olympic Qualifier was not a fluke.

The Super Falcons are without Desire Oparanozie, Osinachi Ohale and Faith Ikidi in this tournament but the Camerounians tormentor-in-chief when they met in the 2010 AWC, Perpetua Nkwocha, is still very much around and she's set a lofty 15-goals target for herself in this competition and will want to open her goal-scoring account tomorrow while the Lionesses' team remains largely unchanged from the team that featured in the 2010 AWC and the 2012 Olympics.

Apart from the historical rivalry and bragging rights, the stakes in this match has also being heightened by the Bakassi issue. Also, this match is important for both teams as a win tomorrow is 50% guaranty of a spot in the semi-finals as the other group opponents, Ethiopia and Ivory Coast don't have female football pedigree.

The Super Falcons play more of "flair" football depending on nimble footwork, skill, speed and the individual ability of players like Glory Iroka, Ngozi Okobi, Esther Sunday, Stella Mbachu, Ebere Ngozi, Perpetua Nkwocha, Helen Ukaonu etc while their opponents play more as a team and rely less on individual flair. Like their male counterparts, the lionesses are very physical, brawny, tenacious and workaholic, full of running and have a "never say die" spirit.

Nigeria and Cameroun are no strangers to themselves at this level and have in fact played themselves many times with either sides recording wins and losses so history may not count for much as both teams square up tomorrow.

Kick-off is 2.30PM Nigerian time (3.30PM South African time) and it'd be on SuperSport 3.

abysirius: Owning Keke in lagos of today is now a good business as the recent ban on Okada within Lagos metropolis is now an avenue for keke owners to exploit passengers around Lagos.

Imagine keke charging 70 naira for a distance that they would have gracefully collected 30 naira for.

As if the frustration lagosians get from them isn't enough, they will only stop u half way and expect u to trek ur way to ur final destination. Obviously, stopping okada from operating at a time when 3rd mainland is closed is one problem too many for lagosians.

Considering the terrain here, Okada has comparative advantage that keke doesn't have even if more keke are to be ordered to reduce the resultant effect of okada ban. Okada can manoeuvre traffic better, it's even cheaper, keke cannot enter streets and coners the way okada will do etc. Too many reasons while Okada's ban is not healthy.

Though the ban on the long run could be worth all these wahala now like some pple argue, the effect now is hellish and I know a lot of persons here will share the same view. May be the die is cast as we cannot reverse the situation with okada and the ban. So how then do we cope with this excessive demand and hike in the prices of these keke napep men? Since govt has succeeded in monopolising poor man mode of transport all to the fa4 of keke owners (and to average man pikin detriment) how then do we cope with keke in lagos, how do we forge ahead?

specialguest: I find myself mostly online (either i am working or browsing through websites i am addicted to) and sometimes people ask me questions like "what are you doing online or what website are you browsing?" to be honest, it used to be so annoying earlier on having to explain " oh i am on nairaland checking out the latest news" or i am searching for an information on google. But after careful consideration, i realised that most people who own devices that can browse ( laptops, web enabled phones, tablets,etc) actually have no idea about what to do online...

Abeem: The apparent half-heartedness, insincerity and double standard of this administration in the war against corruption has again come under attack.  The latest attack is from the CD, asking the chairman of EFCC to look into allegations against the president and some powerful members of its party and “produce his reports for Nigerians to accept that he is not just a tool of persecution as against an agent of prosecuting anti graft war."

The group, in a statement by its president, Dr. (Mrs.) Joe Oke-Odumakin called on the EFCC not to limit its investigations to the allegations against Atiku alone, but to also look into the following allegations:
[b]•Chief Gani Faweh-inmi’s petition against President Obasanjo for abusing his office to raise N6b from private and public institutions for his personal library;
•The allegation that the President has 200m shares in Transcorp;
•The corruption charge of a Tokunbo plane being purchased for the price of a new one on the Presidential fleet;
•The charge by the Revenue Allocation Committee that funds running into billions of dollars were withdrawn from the Excess Crude Accounts without the approval of the National Assembly;
•The probe into Bode George led NPA’s board where about N53b was reportedly mismanaged;
• The Works Ministry under Chief Tony Anenih where N360 billion was allocated without any motorable road to show for it; and the
•The disappearance of over N500 million from the Maritime Agency. The late Engr. Funso Williams queried this before his death. But the removed DG of the Agency was alleged to have disclosed that the funds were spent for the Southern Leaders Forum held in Enugu last December.[/b]


Interesting, but does the EFCC Chairman have the gut to accept this challenge?
