The Federal Government on Thursday bowed to pressure and directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to separate the Christian Religious Knowledge and Islamic Religious Knowledge subjects in the basic education curriculum.

The grouping of IRK and CRK under the Civil Education in the new curriculum by the NERDC had generated controversy in the last few months with religious leaders calling for their separate teaching.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the directive at a meeting of Ministers of Education with education stakeholders from six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting, which was attended by Commissioners for Education from various States of the Federation, was part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the partnership within the three tiers of government in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 4 (SDG4).

Adamu, who was represented by Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwukah, said the directive to separate the subjects became necessary because of the various complaints by Nigerians, especially the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that has been vociferous about the issue.

He explained that the collapse of the two subjects was done by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to reduce the number of subjects offered by pupils and students in schools.

The minister said: “There is this controversy over the merger of CRK and IRK in the school curriculum. There were complaints by parents that children were overloaded with so many subjects and the recommendation then was to merge one or two subjects. Unfortunately, water and oil were merged together and it is not working.

“So, to save ourselves the agony, the two subjects should be separated. We push that to the NERDC,”

Adamu, in his address, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to revamping the education sector and appealed to state governments as well as relevant stakeholders to support the federal government effort.

He also expressed the commitment of the government towards achieving the SDG4 by 2030 in line with the global timeline.The minister said Nigeria has selected the Goal 4 of the SDGs, which emphasizes inclusive and quality education for all and promotion of lifelong learning, for implementation in view of the importance of education as a fulcrum to national development.

He said the federal government was aware that in the journey towards achieving the Education 2030 Agenda, key issues including the phenomenon of out-of-school children, insecurity in and around the schools and infrastructure decay must be addressed.

The minister said there was also the need to have credible and reliable data, and how to address the challenge of poor teacher quality as well as teacher gaps, low carrying capacity in tertiary institutions, and poor learning outcomes.

“We recognize that the task of revamping the education sector is challenging, the ministry of education cannot do it alone. Our task is to coordinate national efforts to meet our national goals and objectives.

“It is our believe that with good planning, appropriate investment of resources, transparency, due process, effective collaboration and coordination of inputs and activities of government and that of all stakeholders, we will realize our vision of providing quality education to build and sustain adequate human capital for national development,” the minister added.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, is set to declare President Muhammadu Buhari’s seat vacant, if the ailing President fails to show up, in the next 18 days.

This came into consideration on Wednesday, when a pro-democracy group laid bare plans to commence a daily sit-out at the National Assembly in 18 days, if the Legislature fails to respond to the health problem of Buhari, as prescribed by the 1999 Constitution.

In a statement released by its leader, Deji Adeyanju, and Secretary, Dr. John Danfulani, the group noted that “Buhari has now been absent from office, and from Nigeria for 72 days,and if the situation remains unchanged, it would commence the sit-out on the 90th day of his absence”.

“If the President is found with any infirmity that renders him incapable of discharging his duties, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, shall officially declare him incapable of discharging his duties, and declare his office vacant, as prescribed in (2) of section 143”, the group declared.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, youth renaissance group has reacted to Peter Okoye of P-square’s perceived ‘insult’ on the Federal government of Nigeria.

The brothers via their Instagram pages had questioned the federal government’s purported move to ban production of music videos abroad.

They said the federal government was trying to control what it never supported, adding that one day, a law would surface that will monitor how they sleep with their wives.

Reacting in a statement signed by the APC youths national secretary, Collins Edwin and made available to PoliticsNGR, the group described Peter Okoye as a “son of darkness” and urged security agencies to arrest the musician for comments alleged slander and defamation of character.

The Cross River Police Command has confirmed that nine people died in a fire outbreak that occurred at Linc Oil and Gas tank farm on Sunday.
Mr Hafiz Inuwa, the State Commissioner of police confirmed the figure at the scene of the event.

Inuwa added that several other persons, who sustained injuries were currently being treated in one of the hospitals in Calabar.

According to him, the manager of the depot is yet to brief the police on what led to the explosion.

“Up until now, nobody has come out to tell us that this is what caused the fire outbreak.

“We have gone round, we have done what we can do but investigation will later reveal what actually led to the explosion.

“For now, nine people are confirmed dead and many others who sustained different burns are currently receiving treatment in one of the hospitals around town”, he said.

A 14-year-old pupil was crushed to death on Monday by a fast-moving vehicle while being pursued by a masquerader, aka okorosha, at Ogbaku, in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
A witness told Punch that the boy, who was on his way to school at about 9am, took to his heels on sighting the masquerader, while the masquerader took advantage of his fright to chase him till he ran into the path of the vehicle on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, a few metres from a police division in the area.

After the incident, the masquerader was said to have mixed with other masqueraders, leaving the boy in a pool of blood.
Another witness, Mr. Linus Iwuji, blamed the community leaders for allowing the masqueraders to roam freely on busy roads rather than restricting them to the village square.

“I blame the community leaders for allowing the masqueraders to walk about chasing people. They and their guides even rob and rape women at late hours,” Iwuji said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident.
He added that the police were investigating the incident

While speaking in an interview in Abuja on Monday, JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, disclosed when JAMB will begin the sale of the 2017 Direct Entry forms and registration of foreign candidates.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will begin the sale of the 2017 Direct Entry forms and registration of foreign candidates on July 10.

JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Fabian Benjamin, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bwari, FCT, on Monday.

Mr. Benjamin said the process of registration for the Direct Entry was spelt out in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

He said candidates for Direct Entry were expected to have Advanced Level, Diploma or its equivalent, while foreign candidates must possess proof of residency abroad.

“For the foreign candidates to be eligible to write examination in a foreign centre, you must have stayed in the foreign country for at least a minimum of six months.

“You must have schooled there, you must have had your secondary education there; you must show evidence of having stayed there for period of six months.

“If you have stayed in Nigeria and just fly to London to register, you are not eligible; you must have schooled or had your secondary education outside the country.

“Not that you just finished Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in 2016, and you are rushing to the United Kingdom to go and write your examination,” Mr. Benjamin said.

He noted that measures had been put in place to ensure that candidates who wrote the previous examination and failed were not registered in foreign countries, unless they meet the guideline.

Mr. Benjamin explained that the Direct Entry would be sold at the same price previously pegged at N5,000, adding that the Board was yet to fix the price for application for foreign candidates.

“We are discussing on that, we are looking at selling the forms at $100 (N31,525.00) for Africans and $150 (N47,287.50) for non-Africans,” he said.

He said that the JAMB Direct Entry was mainly for people who already possessed a diploma certificate and wished to do a programme in the university.

The family of Olakunle Churchill, the estranged husband of actress, Tonto Dikeh, in a new development have taken back their bride price from the actress’s family.

About a week ago, Tonto Dikeh revealed in a leaked text that she paid her bride price herself, however, her father has said that Olakunle Churchill fulfilled all traditional requirements and has returned the bride price to him and in so doing has annulled their traditional marriage.


In a new video gathered by Media Room Hub, Tonto Dikeh’s estranged husband, Olakunle Churchill requests for the bride price he paid on Tonto Dikeh. Churchill’s uncle, Bishop Dare met with Tonto Dikeh’s father, Chief Sunny Dikeh in Portharcourt to collect the bride price this week.

More than three weeks after the document was passed by the National Assembly, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at exactly 4:42pm on Monday signed the 2017 appropriation bill into law.

The event which took place at the Vice President’s Conference Room at presidential villa in Abuja was witnessed by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

The document tagged budget of growth and recovery was passed by the National Assembly on May 11, raising the estimate to N7.44 trillion from the N7.28 trillion presented by President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2016.

Also at the signing ceremony were the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, Senator Danjuma Goje. The Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, Head of Service, Winifred Oyo-Ita, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters (Senate), Ita Enang, Senator Phillip Aduda, were also at the event.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City over the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu (POI) against the decision of the Justice Badamasi-led Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the Cross Appeal filed by the All Progressives Party (APC) and Governor Godwin Obaseki (GO) which sought to nullify the recount of the ballot papers ordered by the Tribunal, a process that exposed a lot of inaccuracies and over voting which gave the APC the declared lead at the September 28 Election.

The court ruled that the cross appeal lacked merit and was a mere ‘academic exercise’.

In the same ruling, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal filed by the PDP and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu challenging the judgement of the tribunal which validated the election of Mr Godwin Obaseki.

In dismissing the Appeal, the Court of Appeal described the Appeal as lacking in merit.

All parties have one final chance to appeal both decisions of the Court of Appeal.

The Electoral Act grants either party the right to approach the Supreme Court for adjudication and whatever decision the Supreme Court makes become final, binding and unappealable.

It is unclear whether the PDP or POI will appeal the decision but investigation by Urhokpota Reporters indicate that the PDP/POI will proceed to the Supreme Court shortly and advance their case.

The implication of the judgements by the Tribunal, for Nigeria’s jurisprudence and the country’s electoral system is dangerous because it gives the confusing impression that over voting means when the total number of votes cast exceeds the total number of voters registered instead of the total number of voters accredited to vote, thereby rubbishing the process of accreditation of voters in an election.

But the Supreme Court, being the repository of the jurisprudence of Nigeria, shall make pronouncement on this and clear any confusion.
