Not only are the helos at risk, the Alpha Jets also have something to worry about. I won't be suprised if BH manages to acquire ATGMs..Then, the war will take a drastic turn.
I would expect that by now the FG would have by now be liasing with the Libyan govt to find out how many more of these pads are most likely in circulation and who is responsible for shipping across our borders. As for the ATGM, let's hope our worst fears are just a dream.

Its so sad how succcessive Governments have "Gestapolized" (For lack of a better term), the DSS. The DSS has no business arresting and detaining political dissenters. These 1st generation Soviet MANPADS, though extremely inaccurate, can be lethal against helics and other low flying aircraft. I just hope these things won't be smuggled into centres like Lagos and Abuja as they may be used against passenger aircrafts which have no counter-measures.

The DSS has done quite well within the last 2 years or thereabout...The fact that terrorist attacks have drastically reduced in civilian centres shows that a lot has been going on behind the scenes.

The fall of the Libyan regime in 2011 led to a uncontrollable "free for all" looting of Libyan armouries. Conventional weapons siezed from Gaddafi's huge stocks have fueled insurgencies not only in Syria, but also in Somalia and Nigeria and most of these weapons are unaccounted for till today. I have no doubt that the Chadian Government served as middlemen in the purchase of these weapons by Boko Haram.
We would be deceiving ourselves to think BH was not working tirelessly to acquire these technologies all these while.
Forget all the cross border attack on Countries that share border with us, Nigeria remains BH's ultimate target.
There is no doubt that the manpads were smuggled into Nigeria from Chad or Niger. If there is a syndicate out there beyond our borders that is getting paid to bring in these weapons, we might as well go after them covertly. Only god knows how many are within our territory as we speak and how many these su**ckers are willing to buy.

GUN RUNNERS AND ARMED BANDITS ATTACKED TROOPS IN BOSSO LGA

Following covert surveillance and intelligence reports on the activities of some gun runners and armed bandits in Kopa, Dagma and Gagaw villages of Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State, troops of 31 Artillery Brigade, 1 Division Nigerian Army, in conjunction with Nigeria Air Force detachment on Internal Security Operation MESA went on quick cordon and search in the affected areas to recover suspected weapon cache and arrest the suspected persons and the armed bandits.

Contrary to statements attributed to some questionable vested interests, the troops were on legitimate official duty aimed at safeguarding lives and property of citizen in the area.

While approaching and deploying to carry out their lawful duty, the troops came under simultaneous and sporadic shootings in all the three locations.

They however responded as necessary in line with the rules of engagement. Sadly, an officer and 8 soldiers of the Nigerian Army and 2 Airmen of the Nigeria Air Force lost their lives in the line of national duty. Additionally, one soldier is still missing while 2 of their colleagues were seriously wounded.

The suspected gun runners and armed bandits also burnt down 4 operational vehicles and vandalized 2 others. Bandits also carted away 4 AK-47 rifles and one Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle belonging to the deceased soldiers.

The troops also killed 8 of the armed bandits and arrested 57 others. They also recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition. The recovered items include; 3 AK-47 rifles,10 Local AK-47 Rifles, 9 Locally made Pistols, 6 Revolver guns, which fires 7.62mm (Special ammunition), 45 Loaded Dane guns, 10 Clubs and Cudgels, 41 Arrows, 18 Bow cases, 122 Cutlasses and Machetes as well as 20 Daggers.

Other items recovered include 31 Axes, 63 rounds of 7.62 (Special) Ammunition, 10 Bajaj Motorcycles, Assorted Charms and Amulets, 2 Vehicles, 38 mobile telephone handsets, a wristwatch, 5 Identity Cards, Passport Photographs, Cash sum of N23,870.00k, 5 Japanese Yen and 35 different denominations of old Nigerian currency, 15 Catapults, 8 Torchlights, 2 Gun Powder bottles, 4 empty cases of Ammunition and 41 Cartridges.

The troops also seized a military Waist Belt and a pair of military Combat Boots.

It is important to stress that the nefarious activities of the gun runners and the armed bandits has direct bearing with the influx of weapons and general insecurity in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory and the North West geo-political zone of the country.

The same gun runners have been confirmed to be the suppliers of arms to armed robbery gangs that were involved in series of armed robbery attacks along Minna-Bida road and the general environment.

Although the situation is under control, the military will not rest on its oars until all those involved are arrested and brought to justice. The military will continue to deal with any violent threat to our national security.

All law abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their lawful duties as the cordon and search operation continues in the general area and if necessary expand to other identified areas to keep our people safe.

Thank you for your kind and usual cooperation.

Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman
Acting Director Army Public Relations
RIP to the fallen angels.

FG summons 37 mine Officers over diversion of explosives

The Nigerian Army had revealed that some mine officers are supplying explosives to the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the country.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has recalled all Federal Mines Officers in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory over reports of illegal diversion of explosives.
In a statement issued by Mr Olayinka Oyebode, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister on Friday, August 5, in Abuja, the recall is with immediate effect.
Fayemi said this became imperative to strengthen the institutional capacity of the ministry to cooperate with the security agencies in ensuring the security of lives, environment and property in the country.
He said the call came barely 24 hours after the ministry blacklisted and withdrew the explosives licences of Delta-based company for the illegal diversion of explosives.
The Nigerian Army had revealed that some of the mining companies are supplying explosives to the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the country.
According to the minister, all the affected officers are to report to the headquarters of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Abuja for further directives on their next assignments.
I worked with a local mining company in olode, Ibadan back in 2009 as an IT student then. I can tell you how loose the law is against the acquisition of explosive chemicals used in the mining and quarry Industry.
I can remember explosive guy was from kaduna and the company kept most of its equipment including explosive making material with a aged farmer who lived less than 1 km from the main town.
The NSA and DSS better keep a eagle eye on all these companies. Some of the staffs could as well sell explosive materials if approached by a rich bidder. In this harsh economy, every man has a price.

When the government has blatantly refused to deal with the issue of rampaging killer Herdsmen this is what happens. Civilians take up arms to defend their territory, women and children.

Something as simple as condemning the attacks will reduce the impetus for further attacks. States with occurrences of attacks should ban these killers in totality and invest in ranches.

It is only when there are retaliatory attacks on the herdsmen you see these soldiers ordered into action. Don't be surprised if the the soldiers raze the village because of this.
My Broda, you just spoke the truth and proffered a lasting solution to this problem. All governors should empower their people and herders to go into cattle ranching business. Herdsmen cannot continue to kill us because we eat their meat and ponmo. There are no Fulani's in Texas and they have abundant ponmo and meat. Any state governor that refuse to invest in ranching is the real enemy. I don't think Nigerians know that for every ponmo and meat they consume, a farmer, father, brother and friend has been killed.

Local sponsors and sympathisers aplenty, significant foreign support has not yet been proven. After BH got repressed the first time, they went on to regroup while simultaneously staging raids on local police stations. That's where they got their start ups and their weapons look very similar to what we use. As for efforts to liase with foreign groups within the sub continent and afar, they made contacts with similar groups like in Mali and similarly made entreaties to Bin Laden, one of which they found letter from BH at Abbotabad.

Knowledge of ieds probably came from passing down of knowledge plus downloads off the internet as it was well known they frequented jihadi forums. Nothing is advanced about satellite, all it'll take is for a local skilled in telecoms or smuggle a guy in from abroad.
As for Turkey, meh, Erdogan and his ex allies have scores to settle. Let them provide proof of their wild conjectures.
So are we to conclude that BH was 99% Nigerian with very little foreign input. If it is, then our ability as a nation to secure and protect our sovereignity needs to be worked on.
Foreign Affairs › Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by persius555(m): 9:25pm On Jul 29, 2016
I will go with nemesis2u on this one. The BH under Mohammed yusuf fought with bow, arrows and dane guns and in just a few months, BH was making IEDs and spreading their ideology with the sophistication of satellite technology.
BH was a tool in the hands of foreign sponsors, but what their agenda is till date, we do not know. If turkey affiliated schools in Nigeria can be used as a financial conduit pipe to fund coup plots in Turkey without the knowledge of our intelligence agencies then we shouldn't be pondering over who the sponsors of BH are.
Left to me, BH had the backing of both foreign and local sponsor.

That the supposed traditional rulers collected money from the herdsmen, is a permission or license to kill?
How do you people reason?
I believe that other parts of the country where these similar attacks have prevailed unchecked their traditional rulers collected money as well.
Guys, we are talking about human lives here and not chicken!
How can you guys be supporting these people for taking other people's lives for christ sake?
You guys really need to review yourselves. I'm not sure most of you are sane anymore.
Bros, the thin tire me o. I am not from the south east but i must say that it is unfair to mock and accuse traditional rulers from SE of collecting grazing fee when we know that every community with a traditional leader in all parts of the country are equally guilty.
This is pure hypocricy. Instead of making a laughing stock out of the situation, we should be happy that an igbo man just came out and spoke the truth that other tribes cleverly avoid discussing in public.
Every community should as a matter of urgency hold meetings that will help discourage this shameful acts by greedy traditional rulers.
North, west, south, east, we are all guilty of this accusation. No mans life is what the greed of another man.

They don't dare as long as the NAF & NA has the quick respond ablility ( ie:Air support arrive in 5-10 minutes + great fire power ) but I doubt it. So the smart option is the optimization of the current resouces in hand, making good use of high mobility and air superiority. How can they took MBT ,Shilka,LAV ?It shouldn't have been that easy.

SM-4 rapid motar rate of fire 40 shots per minute
This combined with intense air support would have sent BHT scampering for safety. Notice the way bh foot soldiers cautiously strolled behind the gun trucks. Heavy illuminated flare like the one below would have given the base a upper hand.

Henry240:
- We cannot depend on helicopter support. American infantry doctrine is built around the use of aerial assets, that is, troops are only meant to pin down the enemy while gunships or heavy artillery is called in to decimate the enemy.

We can't fight like that because, we simply do not have the resources or manpower to deploy helicopter or artillery assets in every engagement. In America, it is the machine, not the man that does the fighting.

- Baga and Gwoza were major embarrassments for Nigeria, however, we can see that tremendous progress has been achieved since our Baga fiasco, and it wasn't because of helicopters.

- NA employ a series of layers of base defences. This includes the use of scouts, marked engagement zones, trenches and elevated observation posts.

Every N.A base has a Quadcopter UAV for surveillance, Scout, Artillery, trench, Sniper and at least a 12.7mm.

All boko rats do not carry 12.7mms, they usually attack from standoff positions using 14.5mm. 95% of them are armed with AK-47s firing 7.62mm's. So the vest our troops wear are more than sufficient. An MRAP won't stop a 12.7mm either.

- Mortars alone won't save the base, SOP's simply weren't followed.
The bolded would have saved half of the number of oldiers that died in bosso.

This is a deliberate re-arm of boko haram. The nigerian army should be ready to pursue BH as far as Niger republic.
Nigeria is their target, niger republic is their source of weapon. Its most likely that these weapons were delivered from libya and shipped through niger republic. Why lose such huge cache of arms just as BH is been decimated completely.
