Lena Henderson and Roland Davis got married as teenagers in Chattanooga, Tenn., during World War II. On Saturday, the 85-year-olds are getting re-hitched in Buffalo, nearly 50 years after they divorced, according to Cupid's news cherubs.
"I always thought it might happen," Davis, a military vet whose second wife died in January, told the Buffalo News. "It was always in the back of my mind. We're just thankful that we could get back together."
"I think we just kept thinking about each other all the time, even though we were so far apart," said Henderson, a widow after her second marriage.

After divorcing in 1964 -- nobody is saying why -- they kept in touch, even as Davis moved around the world. His new wife even used to call Henderson for advice. They last saw each other in 1996 at a family funeral.
"The way they would act to each other never indicated there was anything but a friendship between them," their youngest daughter, Renita Chadwick, told the Buffalo paper. "My mother never had a harsh or contrary word to say about my dad, and my dad never had anything but loving remarks to make about my mother."

"Every person I share this story with smiles, cries or laughs," Chadwick said.
Davis proposed over the phone at Easter. He arrived in suburban West Seneca from Colorado Springs with an engagement ring "pinned to my T-shirt" so he wouldn't lose it.
With four generations of family watching, including the four children they had while married, the forever lovers will re-tie the knot at a church, which they didn't do as teens.
A reception will follow, but, once again, no honeymoon trip.
"I'm just happy that we're here," said Davis.
"You don't think people are going to get married at this age," he added. ""We're just thankful we've lived this long and that we're still here. We have a lot to be thankful for.

DMX is in the hospital recovering from a concussion sustained when he crashed while riding his four-wheeler.

TMZ is reporting that X was riding down a hill outside of his South Carolina home when he flipped and landed on his butt. X says he doesn't remember much after that except for the ambulance lights when he was being picked up.

At this time it isn't known when he will be released.

New York – A Nigerian graduate at the Lehman College, the City University of New York (CUNY), Olu Onemola, has received seven awards at the university’s 2012 graduation ceremony.

He received the awards during the graduation ceremony held on Saturday in New York.

Olu is the son of Bukun-olu Onemola, Nigeria’s Deputy Ambassador at the United Nations in New York.

A graduate of Political Science at Lehman, young Onemola received the distinguished “Golden Key’’ award, otherwise referred to as International Honour Society which is an academic honour society for high-achieving scholars.

Other awards are the Pi Sigma Alpha, National Honour Society in Political Science, and The Jacob Hammer Memorial Prize in English which is awarded to a student leading in theatre performance.

He also won the Edgar Dawson Prize in Political and Legal Theory which is an award to the outstanding Political Science graduate with the strongest portfolio of political and legal essays.

Onemola also received the CUNY Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Leadership Award, and he similarly received the Cum Laude award.

This is a Latin term that signifies “With Honours”, a distinction bestowed on graduates that fall within a 3.4 to a 3.59 GPA on a four-point scale.

Speaking on the awards, the elated Onemola said they had inspired him to continue to thrive in all his endeavours, regardless of any obstacles that might stand on his way.

“My impression is that hard work definitely pays off. Being able to achieve such feats, while serving as the President of the Student Government, is a testament to hard work,’’ he said.

Nigerian plane has crashed near the El-Wak sports stadium in Accra. The crash happened about 30 minutes ago.
Sources say it was a cargo plane reportedly belonging to Allied Cargo.
Reports indicate that the plane crashed into the Hajj Village near the military stadium.

It’s not immediately clear if any lives were lost.
An eyewitness said that the plane landed on some vehicles parked at the village.
Police and fire service personnel are scrambling to redirect traffic and secure the plane before it explodes.

(CNN) -- The first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes since World War II was sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday by an international court in The Hague, Netherlands.



The court convicted Charles Taylor last month of aiding rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in a campaign of terror, involving murder, rape, sexual slavery and the conscription children younger than 15.



The prosecution had asked the Special Court for Sierra Leone for a sentence of 80 years for Taylor, the president of Liberia from 1997 to 2003, but the judges found the recommendation "excessive" citing the "limited scope" of the conviction in some points.

Elton John, was on Thursday, May 24, 2012, discharged from the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, where he has been receiving medication for his respiratory infection.

The 65-year-old singer-composer, was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and placed on antibiotics, and warned against stressful activities.

We gather this has now led to the cancellation of several proposed tours, including four concerts set for Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas.

Imo Transport Company has offered automatic employment to Mr. Matthew Ukuegbu, the father of a set of quadruplets recently delivered in Owerri.

Managing Director of the company, Mr. Emeka Duru, said in Owerri yesterday, that the gesture was to enable the parents to face the enormous challenges of raising the babies. Duru noted that the challenges before the family had “quadrupled” owing to the birth of the babies, adding that the company was moved by the poor living standard of the couple.

He also announced that the company had paid the medical bills incurred for the birth, and donated an undisclosed amount of money to the parents for the upkeep of the babies.

In his reaction, Ukwuegbu commended the company for the gesture, pledging to be dedicated to his new job.

The Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where the babies were delivered, Dr. Angela Uwakwem, commended the management of the transport company for the assistance.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday inaugurated a special post-graduate scholarship scheme for all university graduates with a first class degree.

Inaugurating a 10-man steering committee for the take off of the scheme, at the State House, Abuja, Jonathan decried the dearth of qualified academic staff in the tertiary institutions.

He said that 60 per cent of lecturers in the 124 universities across the country had no Doctorate Degree, noting that the situation “is embarrassing and un-acceptable’’.

“The information I got from the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) is that about 60 per cent of our academic staff in our universities don’t have PhD. that is quite embarrassing, I belief the Professors here will also feel bad.

‘’We have 124 universities, Federal, States and private and that is not good enough.

‘`I will set up an inter-ministerial department to work with some of you in the academics to come up with policies for robust training so that young men and women who are interested in academics could go anywhere in the world, that over the years we must bridge that gap.’’

The President said the initiative, which he conceived while as Governor, was aimed at building human resources for sustainable development and national transformation.

He said the committee would commence the programme by selecting 100 beneficiaries on merit for post graduate scholarship in science and engineering courses in the best institutions in the world.

“Every year, we should tap from among our best brains, selecting our best brains, we are starting with 100 because we have not made adequate arrangement for funding but the number will increase when we make budgetary allocation for it in 2013.

“We select our best brain in the area of science, engineering and some areas of economics and expose them to the best facilities available in the world.

“The ministry of education and this committee will have to travel to these universities to negotiate for positions in the top 25 universities in the world.

“The idea is for you to benefit you must have a first class. It is based purely on merit, no quota. We are giving opportunity for best brains.’’

President said the beneficiaries of the scheme would, on completion of their studies, be mandated to work for the country for a period of five years as lecturers or researchers before they could be allowed to go in to their chosen careers.

Jonathan tasked members of the committee to ensure transparency and merit in the choice of the prospective candidates.

Responding, the committee’s Chairman, Prof Julius Okojie, thanked the President for the appointment and assured him that they would deliver on their mandate.

Other members of the committee include the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Dr Jamaila Shuara and Mrs Iddatu Abdullahi of the Federal Schorlarship Board.

The rest are Professors Musa Alabe, Mohammed Sule , Mohammed Onogu, Olurotimi Tayo, William Okowa and Ikenna Onyibe.

The Deputy Director, Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, will serve as Secretary.

Popular Nigerian singer, Abolore Alexandra Adigun Akande otherwise known as 9ice has tried his luck with make-believe profession.

The Gbamugbamu crooner, as we learnt, is presently on a movie set of Laide Bakare's latest film titled 'Jekere' meaning 'Tumour'.

9ice is cast as the lead character in the movie, which is being shot in Oshogbo, Osun State.

Others on the movie set with 9ice are Emeka Ike, Oby Alex O, Fathia Balogun, Akin Lewis, Ebun Oloyede, Laide Bakare and others.

Jejere is about the story of a woman who has eight female children but whose husband, against her obvious fast deteriorating health, insists she must give him a male child or be ready to forfeit her marriage.

The end is as touching and communicative based on aged black African traditions.

Jejere also deals with the insecurity issue affecting the nation, corruption, mass unemployment, robbery and kidnapping and menace of bad leadership, while it proffers the way forward.

The concluding parts of the movie is expected to be shot in Lagos. It would be released by Sim Line International (formerly Front Row Productions) owned by Laide Bakare.

We learnt that Jejere would be shown at the cinemas before its VCDs and DVDs releases for home use later.

Credible sources in Minna, Niger State, say there are indications that the former military dictator, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and his cronies are grooming Babangida’s son, Mohammed, to succeed Governor Mua’azu Babangida Aliyu in 2015.

One of the sources said that political structures are being erected for the realization of the younger Babangida’s gubernatorial ambition.

A top source in the Babangida political camp said it was true some “Nigerlites” want Mohammed to run for governor in 2015, but that it was mischievous to say IBB is the one grooming him. “[Mohammed] is a man of his own at 40, and has excelled in private sector, and so there is nothing wrong if his friends want him to run.”

The polo playing Mohammed Babangida was arrested and briefly detained by the economic and Financial Crimes commission over ownership of GLOBACOM, a telecom company owned by Mike Adenuga considered a long time personal friend of IBB.

Mohammed allegedly to posses 24% ownership in the $1.5 billion company. Mohammed, according to EFCC also owns oil blocks in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea as well as several buildings in London and foreign bank accounts in Switzerland and various tax havens even though he never held a real job his entire life.
