Politics › Civil Society Group Kicks Against High Cost Of Nomination Form by PeterOnu(op): 4:39pm On Sep 03, 2018
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for sustainable democracy in Nigeria has called on the leadership of all political parties in Nigeria to review downward the cost of nomination form for aspirants.

In its press conference held on September 3rd, 2018 at Agura Hotel, Abuja, the coalition noted that "recent events leading to the 2019 general elections have being characterized with dismay, especially the exorbitant cost of nomination forms across political parties. The worst of it is that of the APC which (sic) proposed cost of nomination form conflicts its ideological posture of the change mantra".

The body also took a swipe at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing "in its responsibility of regulating political parties", noting that INEC is supposed to set a limit for the cost of Political Parties nomination forms just as it limits the cost of electioneering expenditure.

According to the Body, the APC should reduce the cost of its existing nomination cost of State Assembly from N550,000 , RepsN2,200,000, Senate N3,300,000, Governorship N5,500,000 and Presidential N27,700,000 to accommodate Nigerians who have not stolen public funds to participate in the primaries.

"If the APC must lead the campaign to save Nigeria Democracy, it must lead by example in allowing direct primaries at all level thereby introducing fairness to the electoral procedures in the Country," Prince Danielson Momoh, National Coordinator of the Group noted.

No cost of nomination form for those seeking to contest the office of the President of Nigeria should be above N5,000,000.00 as Nigeria is gradually returning to true democracy.

The Coalition also called on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to review downward the cost of its nomination form especially the Presidential to enable young people participate

Investment › Senator Samuel Anyanwu's Vision For A New Imo State by PeterOnu(op): 8:14am On Aug 31, 2018
By: Kelechi Eke.

It is no longer news that Senator Samuel Anyanwu is, today, the most sought after governorship aspirant across all the political parties in Imo State, even though he is of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) brand. This position did not come out of nothing. In life, reward for hardwork is more work. Hardwork surely pays.

From a humble beginning, Samdaddy, as he is fondly called, has overcome all challenges and has emerged the highest political office holder in Imo State on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). His political profile is rising like a hurricane because of his rich democratic credentials which have made Imolites to admire him. His humility, accessibility, charming charisma and enormous goodwill have attracted the movers and shakers of Imo politics to his side. With his resilience embedded in political optimism and realism, Samdaddy is poised to smile home with victory as the next Governor of Imo State.

Today, there are ongoing discussions to present him as the governorship consensus candidate because of his personality and the sustained credible performances he has recorded for himself. He has a dogged fighting spirit that never chickens out in the face of opposition, propaganda and blackmail, which distinguishes him to merit the status of a consensus candidate. He is tested and trusted in democratic struggles and building bridges of friendship. Senator Samuel Anyanwu is indeed a quintessential democrat and a performance-oriented and consummate politician.

If Senator Samuel Anyanwu emerges the People's Democratic Paty (PDP) governorship flagbearer and the next Governor of Imo State in 2019, which are the most likely things to happen, it will provide him the opportunity to build a new Imo of his vision, as he has, before now, shown competence and capacity to deliver on any given mandate.

He was the secretary of Imo Youth Organization in 1983, a platform he used to learn the ropes as a politician. His emergence as the executive chairman of Ikeduru local government area in 2004 came to many as a surprise. This was as a result of his late declaration of interest for the executive chairmanship position when others had almost completed their consultations. But he still went ahead to beat them all, a situation that is similar to the present scenario in the guber race.

Instructively, Senator Anyanwu's administration as a local government chairman was not only impactful but was also memorable. He built a four kilometer road from Afor lolo in Inyishi to Amaimo. The import of this achievement will be better appreciated when one recalls how difficult it is for local government chairmen to construct roads in the State due to paucity of funds. He also constructed the Chairman's office, the perimeter fencing of the council secretariat, dug boreholes, trained youths in a revolutionary computer training program, amongst others.

More importantly, Sen. Samdaddy was the hero of workers in the Council which earned him "Action", a name he still bears till date as far as civil servants in Ikeduru are concerned. This name was due to the manner he handled the welfare of the workers.

In the State Assembly, Sen. Anyanwu was the chairman of Owerri Zone Caucus. He was the only member, at a time, to head two House Standing Committees of Commerce and Industry and that of Finance. Recall also, that he sponsored the customary court amendment law which was the flagship law of the sixth House of Assembly. This is among other bills and motions he sponsored and co-sponsored. His views were not only respected, he was one of the critical members of the State Assembly. The role he played alongside Prof. Fabian Osuji and Sen. Christy Anyanwu in ensuring that the main campus of Imo State University remained in Owerri still attracts encomiums to him till date.

In the Senate, Sen. Anyanwu has shone like the stars. He was among the few senators in the current Senate to head a Senate Standing Committee even as a first time opposition member. He has since gone ahead to deliver on his three key election promises of offering a strong voice, attracting projects, and women and youth empowerment. These excellent performances have also attracted awards and commendations.

It is also important to note that Sen. Samuel Anyanwu achieved all these with the limitations associated with these above positions.

Now that he has expressed his ambition to be the next governor of Imo State, he has designed clear cut strategies to transform the fortunes of the State and bring back smiles on the faces of Imolites.

As elucidated in his policy document, Sen. Anyanwu's vision for Imo State is to assuage the sufferings of Imo people through wealth creation when he is elected, generate employment and reduce poverty. He is set to introduce principles that will promote respect for rule of law, justice, fairness and integration of all stakeholders, run a government that focuses on developing the economy of the state and making it the hub of South East market by identifying and developing viable areas of comparative advantage, create an enabling environment that will attract investors and encourage private sector participation in developing the State economy and having a government that will liberate the State from the dependency on federal allocation.

His vision also includes to grow the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the State by activating robust private sector business engagement, increase earnings of the people and get them to pay taxes and duties effortlessly, engage in aggressive sectoral audit of infrastructure available and also upgrade same in order to channel the energies of the people from civil service jobs to private sector businesses, restore Local Government system and town unions, giving them every necessary support that will bring about grassroots development, make security of lives and property a top priority, guarantee a qualitative and holistic free education, with a clear path on sustainability of funding, reposition agriculture as vehicle for job creation, wealth generation and food security, guarantee the decentralization of the healthcare sector in preparation for a universal health care system, as well as embark on a comprehensive infrastructural development, while upgrading the existing ones.

The task, no doubt, is going to be daunting, but it is heartwarming to note that Sen. Samdaddy has over time built enough confidence for the citizens of the State to trust in his capacity to deliver on this vision. This vision is indeed clear and definite in the mind of Sen. Anyanwu. His antecedents can attest to this. The burden, therefore, lies on the PDP delegates to set the State on the road to recovery by ensuring that Sen. Anyanwu gets the Party's ticket. These delegates can actually immortalize their names by choosing to be pencils in the hands of God for us to have an Imo State of our shared dream.

Nairaland General › CSTD: FG Should Allocate 3% Of Its Consolidated Fund To Improve SST -prof. Njoku by PeterOnu(op): 5:24pm On Aug 14, 2018
By Oriri Peter

The Centre for Satellite Technology Development in Nigeria (CSTD) and National Space Research and Development Agency, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology held their 2018 Annual Space Conference and Exhibition on
the THEME "Revolutionizing Agriculture Through Space Science and Technological Application" on Tuesday 14th August, 2018 at Obasanjo Space Centre, Abuja.

Prof. S.O Muhammad Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) while giving his welcome address noted that Nigeria is currently experiencing an agricultural revolution as a result of the Federal Government's diversity program in which other sectors of the economy are being jumpstarted in other to insulate the country's dependence on oil. So it's safe to say CSTD is leaving up to its mandate by exploring ways in which Space technology can be used as a driving tool to improve agricultural practices and in turn better the lives of the average Nigeria.

Its significant to note that in Nigeria, sustainable farmers are using innovative techniques to produce and distribute food. Food is now being grown on rooftops, in community gardens and anywhere there is space. Agricultural innovation runs across the food spectrum from aquaponics to food hubs. These new models are changing the way food is grown and distributed and it seems the sky is the limit when it comes to project to increase locally grown, sustainably produced food.

Agricultural entrepreneurs are working towards food independence both for city dwellers and rural residents, hence the need for Revolutionizing Agriculture Through Space Science and Technology Applications should become imperative because it touches on a sector that is critical to the lives of all Nigerians regardless of tribe, religion or class.

The Keynote Speaker Prof. Placid Njoku recommended that the Federal Government of Nigeria should statutorily allocate, annually, 3% of the consolidated revenue fund of the federation to significantly upscale and sustain development of Science Space Technology (SST) in Nigeria, he further recommended that Government should expedite the development and launching of NigComSat-2 and NigComsat-3 with specific target achievement date to enhance Nigeria's communications reach and efficiency and bring enhanced impetus into the national space technology development program.

Politics › Isu Agog As Samdaddy Pays Consultative Visit - Photos by PeterOnu(op): 3:59pm On Jul 07, 2018
Yesterday, the most endeared PDP governorship aspirant, Sen. Samdaddy paid consultative visit to Isu Local Government Area, in furtherance of his gubernatorial ambition. The party members, associates and citizens who are clamoring for good governance in the state came out en masse to witness the visit.

Senator Samdaddy poked with dismay, the maladministration of APC government in the State and national levels. He averred that the government has encouraged nosedive in Education as against the free Education they promised, "this present administration has failed in many aspects, but the worst is in Education. Imo State University now chuns out half baked graduates because lecturers are being deprived of their salaries, consequently. The lecturers become lacklustre in the discharge of their pedagogical duties".
He added that, the easiest way to engender quality Education is by paying educators as and when due; salary spurs teachers to give students their best.

While heaping praises on the former Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa for providing a well equipped teaching hospital for the State, he showed his utmost disillusionment that the Okorocha led administration couldn't maintain the hospital. They rather toed a wasteful part; erection of nonfunctional hospitals across the 27 LGAs of the State which he referred to as "jailing of fund that should have been used to build well equipped hospitals in the three geopolitical zones of the State".

In the same vein, Senator Samuel lauded the party's immediate past administration that championed the 10,000 Jobs which helped cub the challenges of unemployment in the State. He also pointed out that the scheme was short lived by the enthronement of APC government.

In conclusion, he asserted that his ambition to govern Imo stems from the need to get things right with the experiences he has garnered for over 16 years in politics.

Responding to the party members who promised him their unflinching support, he said, "give me your votes and you shall have no cause to regret, for I have never failed in any election, and wouldn't fail now that I am needed most to bring our party and State back to light".

Politics › 2019: Hon. Egli Declares For House Of Reps Seat, Calls For Level Playing Ground by PeterOnu(op): 8:32am On Jun 25, 2018
HON. EGLI JOHNSON AHUBI DECLARES FOR HOUSE OF REPS SEAT,
CALLS FOR LEVEL PLAYING GROUND

A member of the Benue House of Assembly, Hon. Egli Johnson Ahubi, has called on the leadership of
the Peoples Democratic Party in Otukpo and Ohimini Local Government Areas to provide level playing
ground for aspirants vying for various positions in the party.

Hon. Ahubi who is a leading contender for the House of Representatives seat for Otukpo / Ohimini
Federal Constituency made the call in Otobi-Akpa (Otukpo) and Ochobo- Ohimini Local Government
area respectively during his declaration to party executives at both local government and ward levels on
Saturday, 23 rd and Sunday 24 th June, 2018.
The aspirant who is currently representing Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency in the Benue State
Assembly, said a level playing ground for all aspirants would not only give credence to the exercise but
would also convince aspirants and their supporters to accept the outcomes of the forthcoming
primaries.

The parliamentarian further advised the party to steer away from sharp practices in the electoral
process, stressing that undue favoritism and imposition of candidates would hurt the spirit and the soul
of the Peoples Democratic Party at the moment. He advised aspirants to shun abusive language capable
of causing disharmony within the party, saying that the party needs all hands to be on deck after the
primaries.

Hon. Ahubi leveraged on the opportunity to highlight some of his achievements as a member of the
State Assembly. Since he began to swim in the murky water of politics, he recounted that he has made
tremendous contributions to law making in plenary and oversight functions.

In providing uncommon representation and responsive leadership to his constituency, he said he has
provided agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and herbicides to farmers, graded some rural roads,
constructed some culverts and drainages, gave scholarship to indigent pupils and students, paid medical
bills of numerous distressed patients, provided grants to educational establishments and constructed
health centres.

In the same vein, he pointed out that he electrified several communities and provided electricity
distribution transformers as life- lines to some communities. In the area of empowerment, Ahubi
disclosed that he distributed equipment to boost Small and Medium Scale Enterprises such as hair
dryers, sewing machines, computers, motor bikes, grinding machines.

To stem the tide of social vices among the youth in his constituency, the legislator said he organizes the
annual Egli Unity Football tournament known as Egli Unity cup. The frontiers of the tournament ,he
explained, has been broadened to cover the entire Federal constituency.

In curbing the current tide of insecurity in Otukpo Local Government Area, Ahubi said he procured and
donated vehicles to support security operations adding that he also built and donated security posts to
the Vigilante in Otukpo / Akpa.

According to the legislator, intervening in the security matter, became imperative due to rising cases of
cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, insurgency and Fulani/ herdsmen conflicts.
A hallmark of the event was the donation of a gift of Peugeot 406 salon car to the Otukpo Local
Government PDP chairman, Mr Abel Otobi to enhance party operations.

In their various responses, Chairman of Otukpo LGA Peoples Democratic Party and his Ohimini
counterpart, Adakole Akatu thanked Hon. Ahubi for his kind gestures and wished him well in his political
aspiration. They commended the law maker for his steadfastness and commitment to the party during
its moment of trials.

Nairaland General › Re: Obande Blast Cso's Who Indicted Sen. Nwaoboshi As Master-minder Of Killings by PeterOnu(op): 9:20am On Jun 20, 2018
Re: Press Conference Addressed By Richard Iyalla, National Leader, Coalition of Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG) on the Incessant Killings of Innocent Nigerians in Ibusa Delta State in 2013. Being Held on 16 June, 2017 at Top Rank Hotels, Utako, Abuja.

Protocols:

The continuous attempt by individuals and groups to continue the heinous act of violating the National Assembly and her members cannot only be seen as devilish but also as a desperate attempt by Mischief makers to demean our democracy. Most recently was the publication by one Richard Iwalla and his cohorts under the auspices of a coalition of civil society groups (Coalition of Human Right and Good Governance in a press conference recently held in Abuja on the 16 June, 2017) targeted at maligning the good image of Distinguished Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi of Delta North Senatorial zone. The office of the Minority Leader of the Nigerian Youth Parliament in Collaboration with the Youth League Nigeria wish to state as follows; We condemn in strong term the use of civil society platforms to malign and assassinate the character of eminent Nigerians and law abiding citizens. We wish to condemn in strong term the use of the civil society community to incite the public as Nigeria have been through a lot in the area of security in recent times. The assertion therefore that Distinguished Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi was indicted in masterminding the killings of people from the (Hausa) extraction is
not only evil but a blatant lie as he is a Nigerian full of integrity.

That the supposed 20 June, 2013 killing that lead to the death of an Okada rider (Zikara Saswad) cannot be said to have been orchestrated by Sen Peter Nwaoboshi who is known to be an upright Nigerian and a lover of all. Moreover, that if the court as acclaimed in the press statement have remanded the Suspect (one Uba Nonso) at the Ugwashi-Uku medium prison
awaiting trial; it is in the prerogative of the court to convict the suspect if found guilty and all accomplices. That it is an aberration to pre-empt the judgement of the court and speak in a negative light as it borders on the integrity of the judiciary and the Nigerian Police Force. We consider the aforementioned press statement as vindictive and mischievous and call on
Richard Iyalla and his cohorts to substantiate their claims within seven Working days or face legal action as we are dedicated to defending all institutions of democracy and law abiding citizens at all cost.

We wish to state that the actions of Richard Iyalla and his cohorts are repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience and advise the public to be ware of unreasonable elements and charlatans of this nature.
We wish to restate our commitment to promoting peace and unity as stake holders of the greater Nigerian Project.
God Bless you.
!God bless Nigeria!

Politics › 2019: A Call On Benue Youth To Support Ogenyi - Oriri by PeterOnu(op): 8:14am On Jun 13, 2018
2019: A Call on Benue Youth to Support Ogenyi

By Oriri Peter

As campaigns for the 2019 general elections gather momentum, a lot of aspirants across party lines have indicated their interests in becoming governor of Benue State. While some of these aspirants are serious contenders, others are just pretenders who are just in the race to either cause confusion or have their names and pictures printed on posters.

In the former category is Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi, a front line gubernatorial candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who has not allowed his youthful age act as an impediment to his aspiration.

It is surprising to know that leadership positions in Nigeria are filled with aged politicians who have the notion that nation-building is their exclusive right and as such, the youth should be relegated to the background.

Perhaps, this explains why though youth are said to be leaders of tomorrow, that tomorrow remains elusive.

As a deviation, and considering recent developments in the polity, it has become strategically calculative that youth in the Country vie for various leadership positions. Of equal significance is that they must throng out en masse to ensure that their democratic will prevails.

A major demonstration and evidence of unity among youth in Benue state shall soon be put to test. In the coming election, the youth shall be confronted with either maintaining a status quo or challenging it. A challenge to the status quo shall be reflected in how supportive they are to their peer, Comrade Okpokwu, for it is on this support he shall rely majorly in challenging the power of incumbency.

In doing this, we must recall that Nigerian youth have been of immeasurable importance to the socioeconomic prosperity of the country as demonstrated by the likes of Sir Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe and Herbert Macaulay who all fought in their youthful days to deliver the political independence we all sought.

On this premise, it has become germane to urge all Benue youth and indeed, all indigenes of the State to support Comr. Okpokwu Ogenyi for the needed change Benue deserves at this critical time. In doing this, we must eschew all tendencies of tribal sentiment.

As an aspirant, his policies of liberating the State from its current economic quagmire are geared towards restoring the lost glory over the years.

Politics › JUNE 12: Buhari Has Reawaken Democratic Consciousness - Ogenyi by PeterOnu(op): 2:41pm On Jun 12, 2018
I congratulate Nigerians on this special day, the June 12, the true Nigeria Democracy Day. It is indeed a high lofty step attained in our democracy with the official declaration of June 12 as Nigeria's official democracy day.

President Muhammadu Buhari has not only demonstrated his capacity as the most democratic Nigerian but has proven beyond every reasonable doubt that credible democracy has returned to the Country.

I also congratulate Nigerians especially the Nigerian youth over the signing of the Not Too Young To Run Bill into law by President Muhammadu Buhari which has grossly encouraged my aspiration to govern Benue State as governor in the 2019 gubernatorial elections.

Today, our hope is rekindled that Party Primaries and indeed the general elections shall be free and fair with the signing into law the independence of the Judiciary by grant it financial autonomy along side State Assemblies in Nigeria.

I am now very sure that with the ongoing tremendous support being received by Benue people across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State, the incumbent shall by no means bypass primary elections, for the powers of incumbency has been deflated by the posture and actions of President Muhammadu Buhari, the champion of Africa Democracy.

I urge Benue people to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC as the end of our suffering is near.

I am very optimistic that, June 12, 2019 shall mark a regime change in Benue from lamentations to celebrations through our collective effort.

The greatness of Benue is in our hands, hence we must make the right choices both at the Party Primaries and the general elections.

Once again, I congratulate Nigerians, Happy Democracy Day Celebrations.

Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi
APC Governorship Hopeful
Benue 2019.

Politics › Exclusive: Senator Anyanwu's Three Years Of Purposeful Representation (part One) by PeterOnu(op): 9:49am On Jun 11, 2018
When he defeated all comers to clinch the PDP Senatorial ticket to represent Owerri Zone in 2015, many doubted his capacities to win the general election, as well as impress at the Senate that of course was expected to be largely dominated by former governors, retired military generals and returning Senators. The doubts were further reinforced by the caliber of people that ran both the party primaries and the general elections with him. These doubts were not because Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu lacked the potentials, but because they saw it as a herculean task coming as an ordinary member of the Imo State House of Assembly. A feat that has never happened in the history of Nigeria.

These countervailing circumstances notwithstanding, Samdaddy as he is popularly known overwhelmingly won the senatorial election and has purposefully represented the good people of Owerri Zone in the Senate. He has proved he can effectively play at both the state and national scenes by demystifying the senate and bringing home dividends of democracy to his Owerri Senatorial Zone Constituents, hinged on his tripod campaign promises of presenting a strong voice, empowerment of youths and women, as well as attracting projects to the Zone.

Nairaland General › Boko Haram: UNICEF, Others Indicted In Plots To Blackmail Nigerian Military by PeterOnu(op): 12:41am On May 16, 2018
The United Nations Children's Education Fund, UNICEF, and other International organizations have been accused of frustrating the Nigerian Army over its fight against terrorists in the country.

A Coalition Civil Society Organisations on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria in its first quarter report released in Abuja on the ongoing war against insurgency in Nigeria noted that after undertaking review of the ongoing-war on terrorism by the Nigerian military observed that UNICEF and other international organizations have been frustrating the efforts of the army through series of blackmails.

Presenting its report on Tuesday in Abuja, Gowon Maxwell Esq, Executive Director of the group affirmed that the reports of UNICEF and NGOs have the potential to present Nigeria as a country with a military that has no good reputation, which would in turn make the country ineligible for international support.

Maxwell in the report recommended that the civil Police must wake up and own a critical part of the anti-terrorism operation by ensuring that it resumes its statutory duties in the areas where the military has successfully wound down its operation.

The report reads.

“The Coalition of CSOs on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria undertakes review of the ongoing-war on terrorism to ascertain maximum adherence of the military to the rules of engagement by the Nigerian military, enforcement of fundamental human rights of civilians and protection of man’s dignity and respect for person and to ensure that the activities of non-state actors are in conformity with the general principles and purposes of the United Nations and other conventions’ rights.

The review period is based on the first quarter of 2018, which allows for the timeframe to be optimum – not too long and not too brief.

“The review monitored troops closely in their operations to appraise their conduct, observance of rules of engagement and compliance with best international standard to ensure that human right remains sacrosanct.

“Field staff and researchers from the coalition made up of seasoned academics and authorities with wealth of experience in internal armed conflict mitigation conducted on the spot visitations to theatre of troops' operations, IDPs camps and affected areas when it is safe to do so. In such instances, they interviewed survivors and eye witnesses.

“The team also reviewed media reporting for contents about military operations and available internal and public documents of organizations and agencies that work in the affected area.

“The review found that the Nigerian Military sustained its operation against Boko Haram terrorists in the affected areas, reducing the existence of the terrorists groups to restricted areas mostly outside the border of Nigeria. The operations continue to attract the interest of International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that make assessments based on their preconceived templates.

“Such reports dwell on the desperate attempts by terrorists to use Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or suicide bombs to sustain their scare tactics and continue to spread terror in the minds of the people. This is even as top commanders of the terrorists group have continued to turn themselves in to the Nigerian military.

“The NGOs' position is capable of scandalizing the military to a point where the only option left is to withdraw troops from areas where they are operating, which would create an environment that would be conducive for a Boko Haram comeback to terrorize people in these places. An identified worrisome dimension is the seeming collaboration between these NGOs and top officials of the UNICEF, Priscilla Haveyda who are directly involved the execution of this agenda against the helpless people of Nigeria.

“Authorities in Nigeria, especially the Federal Government, does not recognize these NGOs as threats, hence the freedom it allows them to operate with, which they abuse by deploying their international affiliation as tools to destabilize their host countries.

“The continue participation of the military in the handling of terror suspects and rescue victims place troops in scenarios where they perform the duties of civil police and they often have to be collaborate at a deeper level. This has made it possible for the military to be accused of failings for purely civil policing matters.

The figure of 1000 persons rescued from Boko Haram by the Nigerian Army was conservative as it was discovered that the Nigerian Army has rescued 2, 146 persons including children, aged women and men in the period under review.

“The search for crude oil in the Lake Chad Basin has not been abandoned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation even when Boko Haram has been deployed as an instrument of intimidation to abort the exercise.

“The population should be conditioned to understand that civilians have roles to play in the war on terrorism. The military alone cannot accomplish the task of eradicating Boko Haram. The efforts of the civilian population would go a long way to prevent Boko Haram terrorists from successfully bombing soft targets.

“The Federal Government should engage international and supranational bodies to prevail on their staffers, appointees and officials desist from making comments that could bolster Boko Haram to regroup.”

Nairaland General › Herders Crisis: Community Leader Lambasts Benue Ethnics Over Attack On Buratai by PeterOnu(op): 12:09am On May 16, 2018
Respected elder and Benue community leader, Chief John Apochi, has fired back at Benue clannish leaders over their recent attack on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai in the ongoing clashes between herders and farmers in the state.

The tribal leaders of Benue state had recently slammed Buratai, who called for a review of the state’s grazing law in order to give room for lasting peace in the state.

Speaking yesterday through their Chairman Chief Edward Ujege, the leaders under the aegis Mdzough U Tiv (MUT), Idoma National Forum and Omi-Ny’Igede who commended the Army Chief for his concern and dogged fight against insurgency in the country, lamented that the call by Lieutnant General Buratai would embolden the killers.

Reacting, however, Chief Apochi said the rejection of the worthy advice by Lieutnant Buratai whom the group also praised for his selflessness and patriotism was a clear indication that the Benue leaders were playing politics and not ready to see the end of the ongoing crisis tearing the state apart.

Writing from his Lagos abode, Chief Apochi wonder why the so-called leaders of Benue ethnics groups spurned the advice by Buratai, who is not an ethnic leader or politician, but a professional, trusted and time-tested soldier like they rightly posited in heir statement.

Chief Apochi maintained that the political leadership in Benue State has refused to be truthful to itself and the citizens on the way forward from a delicate issue that should be treated without any form of politics or sentiments to achieve peace for all.

He wrote:

I am hardly interested in commenting on issues which have political and ethnic slant in my home state of Benuefor obvious reasons. But I avoid it specifically because of the possibility of our people to easily misconstrue the genuine and good intentions by blending it with politics.

But I have decided to voice out on the seeming and raging verbal tussle between the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai and Benue’s ethnic leaders led by Chief Edward Ujege under the auspices of the Mdzough U Tiv (MUT), the Idoma National Forum and the Omi-Ny’Igede, representing the three major ethnic groupings in the state.

Briefly, the Army Chief has counseled the Government of Benue State to revisit the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, 2017, which he believes has ennobled the violent siege of Benue state and opened the floodgate of killings in ceaseless crisis between herders and peasant farmers.

But the Benue ethnic leaders are not comfortable with this advice from the Army boss and in their open rejection of it, they threw wisdom to the dogs, embarked chicanery and buffoonery in a manner that projects these elders and leaders as more interested in the bloodbath in the land rather than enduring solutions to ending the crisis.

I beg to disagree with my elders and leaders on several scores. But first, let me repeat the obvious, a fact known to these leaders that the COAS, Lt. Gen. Buratai is not an ethnic leader or politician, but a professional, trusted and time-tested soldier, as the elders admitted of his character and personality.

It therefore mocks sound reasoning to have perceived and interpreted his honest advice from the restricted prisms of any of the aforementioned camps. It is even wrong and infantile, the insinuation that the Army Chief’s advice may have sprouted from pecuniary considerations or his clandestine desire to protect any ethnic group.

To this end, I wish to remind our elders and leaders that the carnage in Benuestate is fast assuming the character of a war. And in war situations, feuding parties do not have their minds on fixated solutions as these tribal leaders are pontificating. Several options are explored for peace to reign.

And under the circumstances we have found ourselves in Benue today, no sacrifice should be deemed too great to make or concessions too precious to offer for peace. They say, peace is priceless, but war is expensive to fund and manage.

In time past, we knew age comes with wisdom, but not in this generation anymore. When leaders begin to reason in this manner, it becomes apparent that wisdom has piteously departed from these elders. It is reflected in the current ridicule of the worthy advice from the Army Chief. It expresses the depth of our dilemma as a people. Or else, what is the essence of tenaciously holding onto something that is visiting death upon you?

It does appear to me that these ethnic leaders are blinded by acerbic fury, so they have thrown the baby out, together with the bathwater. The COAS didn't call or even contemplate the suspension of the anti-open grazing law by the Benuestate government, as postured by the ethnic leaders.

Rather in the spirit of “Live, lets live,” he canvassed for slight modification of the law to fairly accommodate the interests of all the feuding parties. I don’t think this is a bad bargain and the focus of the tribal leaders should have been on how to save lives, as against the promotion of crisis.

And the manner the ethnic leaders have juxtaposed the explanations appears to me, they don’t even understand the underlying issues at hand, much more think out workable remedies. That our fate is in their hands is a potential risk. From their diction and arguments, it’s clear these elders have muddled this frightening issue with politics because Governor Samuel Ortom is involved. So, every speech or utterance is targeted at impressing him and not tailored towards finding a solution to the crisis.

Anywhere in the world, sensible and responsible leaders drum peace and not war. But the combative diction adopted by the leaders in this interface betrays them as the silent voices promoting the crisis for the political harvest of Gov. Ortom. It is clear, Ortom today considers the ongoing crisis in the state as a make up to his abysmal performance and would want to keep it going so as to benefit from it during the 2019 polls. I consider this thinking and actions now as absurd, repugnant and resentful.

Let me again remind them about the source of this problem, which they prefer to pretentiously scratch on the periphery. I think, these tribal leaders should dissipate more energy on the monumental corruption in Benue State, at the detriment of development, under the supervision of Gov. Ortom.

These tribal leaders should also be concerned with the near zero salaries and pensions payment and the resultant deaths arising from hardships inflicted on the people of Benue.

Why are they not concerned with the undercover forces fuelling the crisis? Does it strike anything in their senses the huge sums of money found in the accounts of the recently arrested Aliyu Tashaku, a Boko Haram member, while development and salaries are denied the people?

Unless and until these elders and leaders begin to sincerely and truthfully address these problems, the fire brigade approach is meaningless and of no effect. If you want to kill a tree, you cut the roots. This problem cannot be resolved by political grandstanding as manifest in the utterances and actions of these leaders. It is a sign of serious trouble for us and the youths should wake up from slumber to question these leaders. It is time to take their destinies into their hands.

Nairaland General › Fuel Scarcity: Group Accuses Oil Marketers Of Sabotage by PeterOnu(op): 4:02pm On Dec 31, 2017
A coalition of Civil Society groups under the aegis of Civil Society for Development Initiative (CSDI) have accused oil marketers as being behind fuel scarcity at a critical time Nigerians were celebrating festivities.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Sunday, the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Abolore Ola Bakare explained that oil marketers have something up their sleeves to hoodwink the Buhar led government into reintroduction of subsidy regime.

The group noted that the fuel scarcity was artificial as well as it was the handiwork of those running the oil and gas downstream to foist their exploitative interest on Nigeria's National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) through subsidy regime and price increase.

They wondered at how the oil marketers arrived at a proposed pump price of N171.05k which NNPC declined that led to cladestine activities by creating fuel scarcity.

'We have on good authority that oil marketers proposed increase in pump price of N171.05k which the NNPC declined. That was why they have decided to create artificial scarcity", Com. Abolore said.

"It is glaring to all Nigerians that the downstream industry players have made up their minds to sabotage effort of government at all cost. That's why they're hoarding fuel at filling stations across the country", he added.

"We are appalled that when officials of NNPC including the Group GMD, Maikanti Baru, the PPRA Executive Secretary and Minister of State for Petroleum were virtually on supervisory tour of filling stations, yet those sabotours stuck to their guns".

The group further suspect IPMAN, PENGASSAN of complicity, particularly for declining Senate Committee on oil and Gas (downstream) invitation, a situation, they described as antithetical to policies of government at ensuring that Nigerians enjoy the dividends of democracy.

They urged the management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) not to acquisce to the demand of those marketers, saying, the time of allowing few oil cabals to hijack the destiny of Nigerians has passed.

The group commended Senate Committee on oil and gas (downstream) for taking steps towards curtailing dangerous antics of oil marketers.

While passing vote of confidence on NNPC management, the group urged Nigerians not to play the second fiddle for any reason since they were the direct victims of the hardship orchestrated by those who did not mean well for the nation.
