Education / Re: 4 Lessons About Studying In The U.S. by pgiddy(m): 6:54am On Sep 14, 2016
I so much agree with your number 4. Lots of Americans are illiterate when it comes to geography. Ask an average American student to name 7 countries in Africa, only a very few will be able to after thinking for several minutes.

Some of them even think that Africa is just one country. And when you tell them that 'hey I am from Nigeria, they say, wow that's good I met someone from Kenya yesterday'. Kenya, Nigeria, wetin join them together.

But one thing I like about the student is that they are always excited to see people from other countries, they want to ask you several 'questions'.
One more thing is that do not always jam talk about issues when discussing with an American student. Be careful when you speak against issues like gay, lesbianism, Religion. Always try to know the person's view before you talk.

You don't know if the person you are talking with is a gay or he smokes and you just open mouth dey talk against guys and smokers.

Congratulations..

My advice: pray pray and pray, be confident, watchout! there are some answers you should never give, read nairaland thread over and trust GOD.
Thumbs up to guys who also posted their transcripts here, and a big thanks to DareFadi, your words of encouraging was greatly helpful.

Can u please explain this statement...' There are some answers you should never give'.. Like wat sir? Thanks
Take for example, you are asked how many schools did you apply to and you say one. My dear, thats a turn off. Therefore try and apply to more than one school if possible like 4.
Another example is, when you are asked "who is sponsoring you" and you say "i am sponsoring myself". It wont work. OR you are asked "why did you apply to this school", and you said "it is because a friend told me about it".
Those are examples of what i meant. I may be wrong though, but i heard 2 people say things like the first two above and i knew that they would be denied and they were.

I would be selfish if i dont post the transcript of my visa interview.
My interview was for 9.00 but i was eventually interview by a young lady at window 5 around past 10. The woman actually gave the guy before me a denial, but i just trusted God that i would not be denied. As the guy left and i was about stepping forward, the woman asked for permission to leave, and she left for about 5-7 minutes. I was just praying that i should not be redirected to the other VO guy at window six, who had been denying everybody visa (as far as i know). The woman eventually came back and this was how my interview went.
Me: Good Morning
VO: Morning
VO: Where are you going to in the US?
Me: I am going to Montana State University
VO: What do you want to go and do?
Me: I am going for a Masters in Mathematics at Montana State University
VO: What did you do in your bachelors degree?
Me: I had my bachelors degree in Mathematics
VO: What year did you finish school?
Me: 2012.
VO: Where do you work?
Me: I worked at a research company?
VO: What is your job description at the company?
Me: I carry out mathematical and statistical analysis for the firm, i train clients on the use of mathematical and statistical softwares, i interact with clients who come with their research work.
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: I am being sponsored by the University and the department. I got a full scholarship together with a GTA.
VO: (She made an expression of surprise on her face). What made you qualified for this scholarship?
Me: The school was impressed with my statement of purpose, my transcript and my GRE score. In addition, i also had a Skype interview with two professors in the department (i mentioned the names of the professors)
VO: What did you have in your GRE?
Me: I had 150 in verbal, 159 in quantitative and 4.0 in analytical writing. (She then asked me to pass my GRE score, which she looked at)
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to IIT, FIT, MSU and New Mexico Institute of Tech.
VO: What made you choose MSU?
Me: I chose the school because MSU offers a Mathematics programme that suits my career goals and research interest. I was also fascinated with the fact that the department of Mathematics and Statistics are under one department which is the department of Mathematical sciences. Hence, I have the opportunity of combining some statistics courses together with my mathematics courses without having to spend more than two years. I also have a senior colleague and friend in the school who is also a graduate student who spoke highly of the school.
VO: Okay, i would be approving your visa, make sure you ................. blah blah blah cheesy cheesy cheesy
My advice: pray pray and pray, be confident, watchout! there are some answers you should never give, read nairaland thread over and trust GOD.
Thumbs up to guys who also posted their transcripts here, and a big thanks to DareFadi, your words of encouraging was greatly helpful.

Full funding thats great. Congrats on that. If u have a bank statement take but it wont be so necessary. What u need make sure is to be very prepared for d interview. Send some people transcript to review if needed. Your full funding must complete to visa success ooo ...Once u prepare well u will be fine. Ur bank statement wont be an issue for full GA at all

Also next week is full of holiday so u need to comfirm that ur date is not falling on salah or monday holiday
Thank you for the reply @Darefadi, sorry I meant upper week not next week.
One more question. So that means once I am asked the question of "who is sponsoring you", I should tell them that the school is sponsoring me. Right?

Hello guys, I really appreciate the comments on this thread, it has been quite helpful.
I got a full funding from Montana state University together with a GTA for an MS in Mathematics . My visa interview is for next week, I want to ask if I still need to go with a bank statement for the interview?
Thank you.

DareFadi:

This topic has come up before ,,,,,,, Getting a Visa it is fine now (u still have up to 6 months) , it is flying that might be an issue , at MOST point of entry you would be refused if you have 6 months or less on your passport . You can get a renewal in Nigeria from 6 months to the expiration of your passport so work 6months back from January is July so from July you can get a new passport

It wont stop u from getting a visa now (blc u still have up to 6 months) ...... but u need a new passport before you travel because August is less than 6 months from January ....

It best to get a new passport from July or if you get the visa on your current passport no problem . Just make sure before you travel in August , you get a new passport then Fly with both passports .....Or if you just want one passport then go get a new passport after the passport comes then you go get visa .... Any way you decide will work .

You work out what timing works best for you .... If it comes up at the interview , state you are aware of the 6months rule and you had planned after the intervew to renew your passport before travelling . if you want to be extra safe make sure on your interview date you still have at least 6months

Thank you for the comment, it was helpful.

Thanks

Education is a long term investment, and Pressid is a right investment if continued will yield a great result for Nigeria. Countries like China, Germany and d rest all started with schemes like this and we can see the level they have gone technologically. Even tho i am a fan of Buhari, but pls Mr Buhari if there is any legacy of Jonathan u shld continue, I will implore u to continue the pressid scheme

Had my interview ysday. It was nice meeting some nairalanders pgiddy (my pressid guy), sassydust and some ghost nairalanders.
It was a good experience for a first timer like me. I can't really say how long I spent in that room anyway (abeg pgiddy, you fit help me with dat info grin) what I can say for sure is that we discussed for quite a reasonable while.
Questions were basically behavioural, some career objective and leadership stuffs too. Also, get ready for further questions based on your replies.
The GD was kul too, basically general knowledge stuff. It was kul we did the necessary familiarizing and agreed on our roles in the waiting room b4 we proceeded to the interview room.
Finally, shout out to my May 6th peeps. You guys were kul. The British schooled guy that presented for my group, you did well bro. And to all the ghosts dat acknowledged they've been following this thread without posting, you might like to post now.
Goodluck fellas.
