I don't disagree with  with most of what you wrote above.  Ultimately, every state should indeed be responsible for its own revenue. My proposal will simply help move us in that direction.

As a practical matter, if the feds abruptly stop sharing national revenues with the states, it could conceivably result to the deaths of thousands, if not millions of people.  State governments should be weaned from this dependence in the most beneficial manner.

What do you mean by "ban religion"?.  Every Nigerian should enjoy freedom of association and should be free to practice whatever religion.
But with this present structure i don't see individual states trying to wean away from oil allocations speedily except lagos state

Beaf:
True, thats why its not started yet.
We will need to parley a bit on what the structures, methods and procedures will be.
.

That's right maybe early next year after this festive period you can create a thread asking for peoples contribution to the project.

Why cant we promote same brotherhood in the bigger picture of the entity called Nigeria.
Simply because in Nigeria we are not members of the same family.

It will have to be by ethnic group, so there will be no North or South or West or South South (if any groups form alliances, all well and good). Everybody will answer to the ethnic group and tell us what they want and how they want it. Each vote will have equal weight.
This is the best option also to me as well thanks for this.

sjeezy8:
Theres no such thing as "peaceful" seperation unless you are talkin about seperating the part of Nigeria with the least amount of oil. Something similar but not exact to becomeriches plan. Those in the North, Fed government and Military get more than 50% of their income from Oil money plain and simple. (try and tell those northern military men no food for you) you think they will break up peacefully?

Elites consists of political elites -  there cannot be a SERIOUS national conference without the likes of Ojukwu, Obj, IBB, Buhari, Tinubu, Atiku and co in one room. . . . Those like Wole Soyinka and co are just mediators and have no political power in Nigeria.  being realistic

Everyone should just relax and let the rotational policy( which i dont agree with) with take place after the East and south south get presidents rigged in from their region Nigeria will be calm and peaceful. After which no one can complain about being marginalized and other excuses.
I agree with you peaceful break up is almost not possible but the calm and peace from the rotational presidency still does not solve Nigerians problem.

Agriculture, education and industrialization will still be what it is today.
Politics › Re: National Unity - What Is A Federal Government? by Pharoh: 10:39pm On Dec 08, 2009
Beaf:
No, no!
It won't have anything to do with politicians or parties. It will be a grassroots thing, with the people choosing those who will truely represent their interests.
The only problematic bit might be, the mode of choosing the representatives. It will need to be above board (maybe the methods employed for MKO's election could be used).
That is my thinking as well but i will like to hear how the representation is going to be at the conference?
Politics › Re: National Unity - What Is A Federal Government? by Pharoh: 10:31pm On Dec 08, 2009
A SNC will not happen anytime soon as long as people insist on including discussions on breaking up the country.  It may be better to start with discussing how to live together peacefully and with equal justice for all.  We've already fought a war to keep Nigeria one.

The smart thing to do, in my view, is to negotiate, rather than try to dictate a suicidal agenda.
Why are you against discussing the peaceful separation of the country?
sjeezy8:
A national conference among Elites and political heads from all parties and regions is not plausible.
It still doesnt and wont change the mind of common Nigerian voters. (who matter the most)
It is possible to hold the conference with the right sets of people and not the elites.

Onlytruth:
If Nigerians want to get to the problem of bad leadership, THERE MUST BE A SOVEREIGN NATIONAL CONFERENCE, and all options must be on the table, else we are wasting our time.
Remove that fear of the breakup of Nigeria, you will be shocked at how fast we get to the solution. Simple.
Seconded

Beaf:
Tribalism is as a result of our failed federal setup.
Every body sees the FG as an enemy to suspect (one that nonetheless provides our meals) and their kinsmen the only people they can rely on.
You just hit the nail on the head.

Dede1:
Please we must try hard not to slide into the disingenuous mucky waters of Nigerian history. I specifically stated that January 15, 1966 left the experiential federalism intact as evidenced when one of the regions checkmated the center in every political endeavor.

It was the July 29, 1966 coup via Gowon that ushered in the unitary system with the central government dictating to state government through the vices of 12-state federal republic of Nigeria.

I shall leave the assumptions to the dictates of the weaker minds and reiterate that the only coup of 1966 tailored along ethnic or regional line was the one of July 29, 1966 that opened the plethora of ills that besieged the cesspit called Nigeria till today.
I support what you are saying but the July coupist did not wake up one morning to plan that stupid ethnic coup. Something triggered it which was the false assumption that the January coup was also ethnic, which in my opinion was never an ethnic coup.

But all in all what you have said is the truth and i support it, just like onlytruth and beaf is saying we need to sit and talk or else.

Are you saying we are just pretending with ourselves? I need a poll to figure this out, so that I can come to terms we all hate each other. cheesy
I am not even sure if to call it pretending anymore or selfishness and you know how nigerians behave behind the PC. Okay let me use myself as an example to give you a clue.

During my undergraduate studies we were six Nigerians, five Yoruba's and one me the outsider. I believed we were all one until i heard what was going on between my back all because i am omo IGBO.

I am still waiting for clear and discrete simplification of the thought that we have true federalism until the coups of 1966.

However, I am of the view that the January 15, 1966 left the powers of regional government intact hence Ojukwu’s wielding of enormous power in the eastern region that scared the living daylights out of the boys in Lagos parading themselves as representatives of the so-called federal government.

My beef is the deliberate attempts of many nairlanders to sidestep the truth when dealing with issues that could give any hope of unity to the cesspit called Nigeria. The federalism in Nigeria as we elementarily knew it came to end after the successful coup of July 29, 1966.

Gowon and 1967 Nigerians killed the true experimental sense of federalism in the colonial contraption called Nigeria.
It wasn't true IMO but developmental federalism because we were a developing country as then and even until now. They were supposed to create three additional minority region but only one was created which was the Midwestern region.

The January coup might have left the regional structure intact but you will agree with me that the assumption of the coup along ethnic lines served as a foundation or prelude to the other actions that led to the destruction of the federal structure.

After the July coup i think the situation could have been ,anaged and corrected but we just allowed that oportunity to snowballed to something else until this present moment.

Our problems even goes beyond these two coups up to the creation of the minority regions and the politics of the British colonialist.

@Stillwater and Dede1 please take it easy ooo

Stillwater please i personally plead with you okay biko.
