So now washing the clothes you wear is a problem? Do you know how you sound?
I dont support your girlsfriends style, and I definitely wont be asking my man to go into the kitchen to wash up, but if Im too busy, he needs to take initiative. Thats my take on this man/woman matter.
When my brother's wife was pregnant, they had no maid and because she couldnt do a lot, he did the cooking and washing and ironing. And almost everday, she'd call my mum to thank her for bringing up a man.
Today, my brother is still a man. He still has his penis . . . . it hasnt fallen off, and his wife treats him like a king.
You earn respect my brothers, you dont demand it. If you have to demand respect, it means you have failed and you know it!!!

Noone said you have to throw culture away, but people should stop hiding behind the bible and God in order not to cjange the status quo. Also, culture is made for people and we do and have adjusted what we carry with us as "culture" over the years. I feel I can also have my own practices within my home and family according to what the individuals involved require and deem appropriate.

My guess is that many men are opposed to the idea because their ego wouldn't be able to stand it. Its more about how they feel their position is in the family and moreso how (subconsciously) he feels the woman belongs TO him rather than WITH him.
You are right people should stop using the bible as cover for what is clearly a cultural matter. Obviously some cultures we don't deem reasonable has to go away just like we have done to the killing of twins. Cultures like we need seven human head to bury the king and stuffs like that. You even answered it the way i have always advocated that the individuals involved should discuss it before modifying such cultures.

There is a catch to this culture modification which if we discussed here will lead to another dimension.

I know you will surely throw the ego and possession angle to this issue at hand, good you threaded carefully by guessing. smiley You think only men has got ego's to protect and not women?. I tell you women has ego as well but it has not been challenged so they always accuse men. All the male ego's are now being challenged with terms like slavery and real men. It will be nice if you show other evidence apart from this surname issue that will point out the position of a man in the family?.

A wife belongs to her husband IMO and not with her husband.

Kennyaribs, what you have written is not even biblical. The bible says the man should leave his fathers house to come to the woman, not that the woman has now come to him. African men stay in their fathers house, there is no basis in the bible for it. its a culture of the people and has nothing to do with the bible at all.

Just face facts, and stop trying to make God's word back you up on something we have come up with ourselves.

The truth is, there is no mention in the bible of surnames either for men or women (married or otherwise). Its a culture which human beings have come up with ourselves.

Have you ever heard of a surname in the bible?
There is no surname in the bible and bearing your husband's name has to do with the culture. So should we throw our culture away?.

Just a few thoughts on this. It's not surprising that dishes are a hot topic. It reflects the underlying principles in marriage and relationships today. Men need to understand that it goes beyond pride and egos. Ladies too need to understand that it goes beyond being romantic. This thread shows a lot of both sexes are still missing the point! What do i mean? Let's reverse the scenario. The man has been working on the family car, and needs to fix a tyre. He needs help in bringing the spare tyre over. He asks the wife/lady to help as he needs to man the jack. Ladies, would you carry the tyre? Bear in mind it's not your usual task. We are here to support each other, sometimes you will need to step out of your comfort zone. That's what love is about. It goes beyond romance or pride. It's only concern is WHAT IF IT'S ME? WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE IT BETTER FOR YOU? Remember the Golden Rule. This issue wouldn't even become a hot topic. Personally i understand that he's had a hard day at work. We talk issues out over dinner when he gets home. But i know that washing up is not his prerogative - besides it takes less than 10 mins. If he is so inclined he joins in. But i never ask him to. Just like he never asks me to do manual stuff like repairs. I join in if i like. We respect each other's territory - does it make one of us less important? No! Stay blessed everyone.
God bless you sister for seeing the real picture.

@Pharoah, it is not in my character to keep streching the reasons that informed my decisions or line of thought on a particular discourse.
(Law may be difficult but not in the league of mathematics at all.
(whether its maths in general or the various aspects like Engring maths)

Growing up, all the people i know who went on to do courses like law just could not handle maths.)

Putting the issue in perspective- talking about studying maths in general in comparison with law vis-a-vis their level of toughness, dont partake in following the ignorants in preaching the sterotypical message we 've always heard since secondary shls days-''i didnt go to science class cos i couldnt pass maths'', things are changing though still slowly.my point? i know of lawyers (law as their 1st degrees) who while studying law blasted ICAN and ACCA with ease(meanwhile they had C6,D7 in maths) and qualified as they were graduating from LAW,ask around in Lagos and some other places and u'll marvel at the numbers of Lawyers who are ACA,ACCA qualified,-b4 u crucify me about the relationship btw ACCA and maths, ask around and let them inform you about the mathematical and applied maths contents of those prof exams(at least that's maths-in-general).Still talking sterotypes; I kinda need more explanations about this left and right hemisphere brain thingy,if u ask me?its crap. You cannot pin anybody down to a particular field and anybody can be anything and everything, no matter the percieved difficulty level, no be God?-lol
Thank you for writing this piece and come to think of it, did they forget about integrated science? agriculture? Some people will say they dropped out of science class because they could not cope with mathematics? I laugh because they are forgetting the other subjects: Physics, chemistry, biology and TD.

Johnpaul88:
@pharoh, i have read your rejoinder. your line of thought is well formulated and pointed. It is indeed educative, though not trying to give up my argument. Your argument is fantastic. U're intelligent.
Thanks for your reply and i would like to say also that you are intelligent but can i ask again what is your argument? I would like to discuss bout that guess i am missing something here. I will be writing about the other reason later in the day.

agathamari:
oh you mean the selfish ones like she wasnt in the mood?  please ther is NO legitimate reason to cheat.  if your not happy in the relationship then have th decency to leave the person first.  if you "love" the person you cheat on then why are you being so childish and not respecting your partner.  if you love a person you CAN NOT BEAR THE THOUGHT OF CHEATING YET ALONE DO IT.  if you can cheat on your partner they why the hell are you in a relationship?  because mommy and daddy said to marry.  are you 3?  cause my friends do it.  if they jumped off a cliff would you?  because he/she did it to me.  and two wrongs make a right?  because my friends/neightbors will talk if i dont date.  are you that self conscious?  because he/she was nice to me.  so now you f*ck everyone who says something nice? because im a man im supposed to cheat.  so all the men who actually love and respect their women are what? again THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE REASON TO CHEAT!
All i can say is that you really said something there and you are right. But come to think of it, is walking away that easy. Will your partner accept such an excuse to breakup a relationship (pre-marital / marital) . undecided Don't get me wrong i really see what you are saying and support it but it is not that easy as you made it to look.

agathamari:
i still stand by my original statement. any person who cheats on thier spouce is a pathetic excuse for a human being and anyone who tells thier spouce that it is ok as long as they use a condom is also pathetic. if your husband swore before god and man he would be faithful only to you then he f*cks some other girl and goes back home to you and you take him back you ARE taking seconds to that LovePeddler.
Have you ever thought about the reasons why men and women cheat? undecided
