DSS combs Bawa’s Abuja home - extends probe to associates

Operatives of the Department of State Services have conducted a search of the Abuja home and office of the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

@eyesoflagos learnt that the secret police, also during the week, invited Bawa’s close associates in the EFCC for questioning, over alleged mismanagement, misappropriation and diversion of proceeds of sold assets forfeited to the EFCC.

However, when contacted on Wednesday to speak on the development, the spokesperson for the DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya, said, “No comments.”

Bawa, who is currently being held in the custody of the DSS “Yellow House,” Abuja, is being probed for alleged financial impropriety as EFCC helmsman.

President Bola Tinubu had on June 14 suspended Bawa as EFCC chairman indefinitely, following which the DSS picked him up.

@eyesoflagos reliably gathered that the search on his Gwarinpa home in Abuja was carried out on Saturday, in the presence of his wife and children.

An impeccable source, privy to the operation, noted that Bawa’s office was also searched on the same day by another set of DSS operatives who presented a search warrant.

“DSS operatives stormed the EFCC Headquarters in Jabi on Saturday to search the office of the suspended chairman. But they presented a search warrant. Another set of DSS operatives also searched Bawa’s home in Gwarinpa, and they met his wife and children in the house during the search.

“Bawa’s close associates at the office were also invited for questioning this week, and they’re being probed on allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation, and diversion of proceeds forfeited assets sold under Bawa’s watch,” the source said.

A government source, who also pleaded anonymity, however, said the DSS had yet to file charges against the embattled EFCC boss as investigation was still ongoing.

“The DSS is yet to charge him to court because they’re still carrying out their investigation to get enough evidence to help their case.”

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, did not respond to an inquiry by our correspondent on Wednesday over the development.

427,962 Nigerians in diaspora get NIN

The percentage of diasporan Nigerians with National Identification Numbers rose to 25.17 per cent in May 2023.

The National Identity Management Commission has registered 427,962 diasporan Nigerians since it launched its diaspora enrolment exercise in 2019.

There were at least 1.7 million Nigerians living in the diaspora according to the World Bank. The global bank disclosed this in its ‘The World Development Report 2023: Migrants, refugees, and societies’, report.

It said, “At a lower level of income, Nigeria is home to almost 1.3 million immigrants and is the origin for 1.7 million emigrants.” Makesense pm reports,





In its May 27, 2023, update, NIMC revealed that the number of diasporan Nigerians in its database hit 427,962, with 178,799 females and 249,163 males.

When NIMC launched the service, it said the exercise was aimed at capturing Nigerians living outside the country into the National Identity Database, ensuring they benefitted from the owning NINs. Without NINs, diasporan Nigerians could not renew their passports, and enrolment was not free.

The commission said, “Nigerians abroad, however, also have the choice of enrolling for free whenever they travel back to Nigeria, provided they have valid passports.

“Where, however, their passports have expired, they must obtain their NINs as a prerequisite for renewal of their Nigerian international passports or in order to acquire new passports.”

The service is available in 77 foreign countries according to a list on NIMC’s website. 40 of these countries are African, nine are in Asia/Middle East, 23 are in Europe/Oceania, and five are in the American region.

Meanwhile, NIMC has now captured over 100 million Nigerians into its database. It said, “NIMC’s enrolment figures as of May 27, 2023 currently stand at over 100 million unique records. The highest cumulative enrolment figure of over 10.9 million was recorded in Lagos State.”

So far, 43.28 million females and 56.75 million males have NINs. The top five states with NIN enrolments are Lagos with 10.92 million, Kano with 8.84 million, Kaduna with 6.19 million, Ogun with 4.19 million, Oyo with 3.89 million.

White woman arrested for killing black mother-of-four after confrontation in Florida

Susan Lorincz, 58, a white woman accused of shooting dead a black mother of four children, Ajike Owens, 35, has been arrested in Florida, United States.

Owens was shot through the door in front of her son by Lorincz who complained about her children playing outside the neighbourhood.

On Wednesday, Marion County Sheriff’s Office said that Lorincz was arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault, CNN reported.

Authorities say Owens was shot through the door of her neighbour’s home near Ocala, Florida, on Friday. A civil rights attorney for the deceased family, Ben Crumpand, demanded that her killer be arrested and charged in court.

The suspect after being interviewed claimed that she acted in self-defence against the Owens who had been trying to break down her door prior to her discharging her firearm. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The sheriff’s office said, “Through investigation, including obtaining the statements of eyewitnesses who only came forward as late as yesterday were able to establish that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law.

Three Siblings Found Dead Inside Landlord’s Car In Lagos (Photo)

The discovery of three siblings dead inside their landlord's Toyota RAV4 caused tangible tension in the Imota neighborhood of Ikorodu, Lagos.

The victims, Uche (3), Marvelous (5), and Lazarus (, all children of one Mr. Osondu, were reportedly playing within the compound when they entered the SUV and suffocated.

On Tuesday, May 23, at around 11 a.m., a witness claimed the kids were playing with their cousin Blessing (11), within the compound, before getting into the RAV4.

No one, he added, could explain why Blessing, the oldest, didn't get in the car and didn't call for help when she saw the situation her cousins had been trapped inside the car.

Some neighbours said Blessing failed to raise alarm out of fear of being flogged for venturing into the area.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that a mob descended on the landlord and beat him until he was rescued by policemen.

Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, said that the Officer in Charge (O/C) Police Family Support Unit (FSU) got a distress call from anonymous callers of a suspected Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD) by suffocation of under-aged children.

He said a patrol team and FSU personnel moved to the scene where they met a crowd that besieged the residence of one Moses in Ikorodu. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

“The father of the deceased children said he was from Izii community in Ebonyi State and a tenant at the aforementioned address. The children were playing with their cousin, one Blessing Hyacinth, a girl of about 11 years, a foster daughter to Mr Osondu, at about 11am inside the landlord's RAV4 SUV parked in a fenced and gated compound,” the PPRO stated.

“One of them inadvertently pressed the central lock button of the vehicle and it ended up locking the trio till they got suffocated. The three children were taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by medics and their corpses deposited at the hospital's mortuary for autopsy in the presence of their father.”

“The landlord was brought to the station for protective custody and the RAV4 SUV was taken to the station for safekeeping too,” he added.

Meanwhile, Don-prof Kesh, from Ebonyi State, shared a photo of the girl in a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, who he mourned.

Tinubu asked to release photos taken with investors in France

The president-elect, Bola Tinubu, has been challenged to share photos of his meetings with the investors he purportedly met in France.

Tinubu raised dust when he left Nigeria about 10 days ago for France.

The trip came barely two weeks after he returned to Nigeria from his post-election break, which lasted for about one month.

On May 10 when the president-elect jetted out of the country, there were speculations that he had travelled out again on medical grounds.


But his aide, Tunde Rahman, said in a statement that the former Lagos State Governor left the nation to carry out some tasks without pressure. makesense pm reports,

Rahman said Tinubu would use the opportunity to fine-tune the transition plans, programmes and his policy options with some of his aides.

He added that Tinubu would, during the visit, engage with investors and other key allies.

As the president-elect returned on Saturday, Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, requested photos of the investors Tinubu spoke with while in Paris.

According to him, there were no meetings between Tinubu and any investors in France.

Instead, Bwala disclosed that the Jagaban only met with politicians and lobbyists from Nigeria.

“Now that he (Tinubu) has finished his so-called official visit to meet with investors, etc, I dare them to release the photos of those meetings.

“I bet you if they release the photos, the foreign investors would turn out to be Nigerian politicians and Nigerian lobbyists from Nigeria,” he posted on Twitter.

Recall that Tinubu last week met with former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in France

Tribunal: Why Atiku’s application for live coverage must be rejected – Tinubu

President–elect, Bola Tinubu, has said the live broadcast of the Presidential Election Tribunal is an abuse of the court process.

Reacting to an application filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu urged the tribunal to discountenance such a move.

He prayed the court to refuse the application on the grounds that “the court is not a rostrum or a soapbox and not also a stadium or theatre. It is not an arena for ‘public’ entertainment.”

In a counter-affidavit filed by his counsel, Wole Olanipekun, the President-elect argued that the application was not within the tribunal’s jurisdiction.

He stressed that the issue Atiku raised touched on policy formulation.

“The application also touches on the powers and jurisdiction invested in the President of the Court of Appeal by the Constitution, over which this honourable court as presently constituted cannot entertain.

“The application touches on the administrative functions, which are exclusively reserved for the President of the Court of Appeal. The application is aimed at dissipating the precious judicial time of this honourable court.

“The said application does not have any bearing with the petition filed by the petitioners before this honourable court. It is in the interest of justice for this honourable court to dismiss the said application filed by the petitioners,” he said.
