2023 election: Why I’m aligning with Tinubu – Nnamani

Senator Chimaroke Nnamani explained why he gave his support to Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmaker said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has breached its constitution by destabilizing the principle of power rotation.

Nnamani stated this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

According to him, the PDP’s constitution prescribed that important political offices be rotated between the South and the North to give fairness, equity and justice.




Nnamani noted that the outcome of last year’s presidential primaries infuriated southern PDP faithful, including the G5 Governors who insist on respecting the rotation principle of North and South.

Court sentences man to death for using victim’s intestines to cook

Rivers State High Court has convicted a man identified as Bestman Lekia to death by hanging for killing four people and using one of his victims’ intestines to prepare porridge in Okwalie community, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The court also found Lekia guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and burglary.

The convict and his gang members reportedly said to be at large, murdered Nenalebarri Mmeabe, Loveday Mmeabe, Gbodu Nobale and Etim Ekpe.

Lekia and his gang first kidnapped Loveday Mmeabe in 2019, removed his intestines and used them to prepare a plantain meal.




Justice Adolphus Enebeli said the prosecution lawyer proved his case beyond every reasonable doub and ruled that Lekia should be hanged on his neck until he was confirmed dead.

Reacting to the judgment, the State prosecutor, Chidi Ekeh described the judgment as erudite, saying that it would save the Ogoni community and Rivers State.

Speaking further, Ekeh said as a human being, he was not happy that someone is sentenced to death, but the State would have failed society if Lekia had been allowed to walk free without facing justice.

President Biden signs historic same-sex marriage bill at White House

US President, Joe Biden has signed new legislation protecting same-sex and interracial marriage.

Man jailed three years for stealing bread and other items

A 26-year-old man identified as Victor Samson has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing bread and other items worth N679,000.

Samson who was arraigned before an Ore Magistrate Court in Osun state, pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Martins Gbenga, told the court that the convict was not a first-time offender and that he broke into several shops at Major Sawmill Junction, Ondo Road, Ore.

Some of the items he stole include packs of soft drinks, table water, a carton of wine, and 50 loaves of bread, among others.

Magistrate, O. A. Omofolarin convicted Samson and sentenced him to three years imprisonment following his guilty plea to the four counts.

Tragedy as cleric, wife and their three children die in church fire

A couple and their three children tragically died in a fire that gutted the Methodist Church mission house in South Africa.

The incident occurred in Askeaton locality in Cala; in the Eastern Cape on Thursday night, November 3, 2022.

The deceased are, Reverend Mandisi Mpthiti (46), his wife Dunyiswa Mphiti (29), and their three children Khololwetu (5); Zimi (3) and Yololwetu (11 months).

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, said detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that a member of the community alerted the police to the burning house in which there were five people. As the police arrived, they indeed found the alleged house in the blaze with members of the family inside,” the statement read.

“The fire fighters who were also at the scene managed to extinguish the blaze but the family could not be saved as they had already died inside the house. Only one person believed to be a domestic worker aged 28 was rescued. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care,”

“The deceased family members include a husband and wife age 29 and 46, together with three children one girl and two boys aged between 3 and 11.



“The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. An Inquest docket has been registered

It is a tragic loss not only for the family but the Methodist Church and the entire Cala community who have been receiving pastoral care and support from the reverend. We extend our condolences to them as well,” said Mabuyane.

18 foreigners have been arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

About 18 foreigners have been arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) over alleged possession of permanent voter cards (PVCs) in Oyo.

Isah Dansuleiman, NIS comptroller in the state who disclosed this at a sensitisation programme for stakeholders on the 2023 general election on Wednesday November 2, said the foreigners were arrested during a raid carried out across the state in October. They were subsequently deported.

He also urged Nigerians to report any foreigner attempting to partake in the general election. Dansuleiman said;

“No migrant, regardless of their status, should participate in the 2023 general elections, and any migrant caught in possession of voter card will face the full wrath of the law.

“Those using them know their status but use them for their selfish reasons to procure voter cards.”

Nigerians to benefit as Canada unveils plan to welcome 1.4m migrants by 2025

The Canadian government has unveiled a plan to welcome 1,450,000 migrants between 2023 and 2025 to tackle the problem of labour shortage.




Sean Fraser, Canada’s minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, released the 2023-2025 immigration plan on Wednesday.




The plan embraces immigration as a strategy to help businesses find workers and to attract the skills required in key sectors.

The immigration plan is expected to manage the social and economic challenges Canada will face in the decades ahead.

In 2021, Canada welcomed over 405,000 newcomers, the most in a single year.




“Our plan has a focus on economic growth. By the third year of this plan, 60 per cent of new immigrants will be admitted under economic immigration categories,” Fraser said.




“Last year, we welcomed the most newcomers in a single year in our history.

“This year’s immigration levels plan will help businesses find the workers they need, set Canada on a path that will contribute to our long-term success, and allow us to make good on key commitments to vulnerable people fleeing violence, war and persecution.”

The plan also aims to attract newcomers to different regions of the country, including small towns and rural communities.


Immigration accounts for almost 100 percent of Canada’s labour force growth and, by 2032, it is projected to account for 100 percent of Canada’s population growth.

Brazilian superstar, Neymar has gone on trial in Spain over alleged irregularities in his transfer to Barcelona in 2013.

The Paris Saint-Germain player, 30, arrived at the Provincial Court of Barcelona this morning for the trial of his legal saga over his 2013 transfer from the Brazilian club Santos

Neymar is one of nine defendants on trial on corruption-related charges, among them his parents and their N&N company, which manages his affairs. All three are facing charges of business corruption.




If convicted, Neymar could face two years in jail and a 10 million euro (£8.6 million) fine.

Investigators began probing the 2013 transfer after a 2015 complaint filed by DIS, a Brazilian company that owned 40 per cent of the player's sporting rights when he was at Santos.

Barcelona said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros (£49.4 million), but prosecutors believe it was at least 83 million euros (£71.8million).

The club said it paid 40 million euros (£34.6 million) to N&N and 17.1 million euros (£14.8 million) to Santos, of which 6.8 million euros (£5.8 million) was given to DIS. But DIS alleges that Neymar, Barcelona and the Brazilian club colluded to mask the true cost of the deal.

Among the other defendants are two former Barca presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, and ex-Santos boss Odilio Rodrigues Filho.

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez will take the stand on Tuesday by videoconference to explain how a 2011 secret pre-contract deal between Barca and Neymar influenced the market.

'Neymar Junior, with the complicity of his parents and FC Barcelona and its directors at the time, and Santos FC at a later stage, defrauded DIS of its legitimate financial interests,' said DIS lawyer Paulo Nasser on Thursday.

DIS is seeking to recover 35 million euros (£30.2 million).

Neymar's lawyers insist their client is innocent, saying the 40 million euros (£34.6 million) was a 'legal signing bonus which is normal in the football transfer market'.

Human trafficking: Nigerian woman jailed for procuring women for prostitution

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffickingin Persons (NAPTIP) says it has secured a one-year jail term against a 42-year-old woman, Ogierarakhi Joyce Amemze, aka Mama Blossom, who specialised in human trafficking.

The agency in a statement on Monday, October 17, 2022, said its Benin Zonal Command secured the conviction on October 13.

The agency had arraigned Ogierarakhi, before the National Industrial Court, Benin city, Edo state for procurement for prostitution.

The offence contravenes the various provisions of the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Law Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.

The statement said that the convict was, however, given an option of a fine to the tune of N1 million.

Court order is major reason we suspended strike - ASUU president

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Emmanuel Osodeke, has said that lecturers in the country called off their 8-month strike due to court order obtained by the federal government.

Osodeke who said this during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Sunday Politics’, further averred that they are hoping the government will do the needful now the strike has been suspended.
He said;

“THE ISSUES HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY RESOLVED AND NO AGREEMENT HAS BEEN SIGNED. SO, WE ARE RESUMING BECAUSE WE ARE A LAW ABIDING BODY AND WE DON’T WANT TO BREAK THE LAW. WE ARE ALSO HOPING THAT THE INTERVENTION OF THE SPEAKER, AS PROMISED BY HIM, WILL RESOLVE THESE PROBLEMS IN A VERY SHORT TIME.”

When asked if this means the lecturers are not happy to be resuming, Osodeke said:


“DEFINITELY.“IN TRADE DISPUTE, ESPECIALLY ONE INVOLVING UNIVERSITY ACADEMICS, THE BEST OPTION IS NEGOTIATION AND THEN YOU END IT WITHIN A VERY SHORT TIME,” HE SAID.“BUT THE MINISTER OF LABOUR BELIEVES THAT THE BEST WAY IS TO FORCE THEM TO CLASS. IT’S SO SAD, BUT BECAUSE OF THE INTEREST OF THE NIGERIAN STUDENTS, THEIR PARENTS, AND THE SPEAKER, OUR MEMBERS WILL TEACH.“ANY COUNTRY THAT PLAYS WITH EDUCATION CREATES ROOM FOR INSECURITY.“WE WANT THE NEXT ADMINISTRATION TO FOLLOW THE TREND OF NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES AND ALLOCATE NOT LESS THAN 16 PERCENT OF THE BUDGET TO EDUCATION. Ghana deports 16 Nigerians for engaging in online fraud

16 Nigerians have been deported from Ghana for allegedly committing cybercrimes there.

Dr Chukwu Emeka, the Controller of Seme Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) disclosed this on Friday October 14.

Speaking at a news conference in Seme, Lagos State, Emeka said the deportees are young Nigerians who claimed that they were deceived or intentionally went out of the country in search of greener pastures.

Reps ask CBN to suspend planned sales of Polaris Bank

The House of Representatives has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the planned sales of Polaris Bank.

The House also resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the interest of the federal government in the bank before its sales.

This decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Henry Nwajuba on Wednesday during plenary.

Mr Nwajuba stated that there is speculation that there is an attempt to sell the bank for N40 billion. He stated that such an amount is less than 4% of the money used to bail out the defunct Skye Bank.

It would be recalled that Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) bailed out Skye Bank and renamed it Polaris Bank.

In his motion, Nwajuba said the suspension becomes necessary to “avert public outcry and untoward reaction from critical stakeholders in the economy, foreign business partners, the banking community, depositors, correspondent banks.”

He stated that the “performance of the bank in the last 3 years shows that it has consistently been recording profit, meeting obligations, and improving performance ratios.”

Nwajuba stated that the deposit and total asset size of the bank are more than NItrillion, thereby making the bank a key player in the economy.

Therefore, the yet-to-be-set-up committee is to determine whether the conditions and terms of sale are likely to ensure a positive return on public funds thus far committed to the bank, whether as bailout funds or other investments; and

And to make recommendations to the House of Representatives for any further legislative or other action necessary to ensure that the public funds committed to Polaris Bank are appropriately documented and accounted for.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said there are 95 million registered voters for 2023 election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke at an event organised by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) at the NED Headquarters, Washington DC, United States of America, revealed that Nigeria now has 22 million more voters than the whole of West Africa put together.

Mahmood also said INEC has introduced innovations to increase transparency and ensure credibility of the electoral process.

He said;

 “THERE ARE 18 POLITICAL PARTIES IN THE RACE TO PRODUCE THE NEXT PRESIDENT TO BE ELECTED BY 95 MILLION VOTERS. WE HAD OVER 84 MILLION REGISTERED VOTERS IN 2019. BUT WITH THE LAST CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION OF VOTERS (CVR), WE ARE GOING TO ADD AT LEAST 10 MILLION NIGERIANS AND THAT WILL TAKE THE REGISTER OF VOTERS TO 95 MILLION.“THE ELECTION IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE THE INCUMBENT PRESIDENT IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO RUN, THIS BEING HIS SECOND AND FINAL TERM.“I SAY THIS AND I WON’T BE TIRED OF SAYING IT TO AN AUDIENCE LIKE THIS: IN WEST AFRICA, THERE ARE 15 COUNTRIES INCLUDING NIGERIA.
