PoliticsCaption This Recent Photo Of Ortom And Tinubu by phylshan(op):
Former Governor Samuel Ortom was the only Governor among the G-5 who came out publicly to pitch tent with Peter Obi, Presidential candidate of Labour Party, and worked tirelessly against the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, the body language of the former Benue Governor during the visit of the G-5 on the President as depicted in the picture indicates regret and a plead for pardon. What is your own caption on the political implication of the photo?

Hahahahahahahaha..... You sound so funny, it hasn't gotten to the point of being this bitter.
Ortom met 90 billion naira and not 35 from Suswam at least you should get your data right.
You know so little about your State. You mentioned BIRS and IGR, so far, the past administration was more clean in terms of IGR, there has never been a more public display of the IGR, in fact, in real time than the Ortom administration.
Go to the BIRS HQ and check the Dash Board for yourself maybe that will calm you down. I am not talking just about the BIRS alone but all MDAs unified into the BIRS.
My problem with you guys is that once some one tells the truth that doesn't conform with what you want to hear thenn BOOOOOm! the person becomes a poorly paid hiring.
The problem of BIRS is not the amount of money displayed on the dashboard but the amount that passes underground. You know that very well judging by the way you sound. I believe you are for some selfish reasons, holding brief for the outgone government.

Are you even listening to yourself? Besides a handful of employments made in BSU, Ortom never deemed it right to take in civil servants, only to do so a month before leaving office. Those that have been in service for years are being owed ten months cumulative salaries, and last got paid in November 2022!!

How in seven hells do you justify such wickedness?? Yet his personal projects scattered across the state have workers on site 247, most notable being the hostel for his private school being built along Otukpo road. Even at night, they're building.

You people just sit wherever you are and make statements about stuffs you know absolutely nothing about.

It could be recalled that close to the end of his administration, Dr Samuel Ortom had employed over 20, 000 employees in the State Teaching Service Board, State Universal Basic Education Board, State Science and Technical Education Board, and some ministries. He however, failed to commence payment of their salaries before his exit.
Dr Samuel Ortom's administration also handled over backlog of outstanding salaries and pensions of over seven months to the new administration.

Hon. Aondona Hyacinth Dajo has emerged as Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly. He polled 17 votes to beat Hon. Becky Orpin who garnered 15 votes in the keenly contested election.
The duo earlier had a tie at 16 votes apiece in the first round of the election. The new Speaker is believed to enjoy the support of the Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia while Hon. Orpin is believed to have the backing of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. George Akume.
It could be recalled that Mrs Orpin has been a long time ally of the NGF and served as his Press Secretary when the former was in the Senate.

PoliticsJust In: Akume, Alia's Camps At War Over Benue Speaker by phylshan(op): 3:41pm On Jun 05, 2023
The fight over who becomes the speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly has taken on different dimensions as supporters of George Akume and Fr. Hyacinth Alia have drawn daggers
Fr. Hyacinth Alia inaugurated the 10th assembly on Monday, paving the way for its 32 members to elect a speaker and deputy speaker. At a stakeholders meeting last night, stakeholders in the APC zoned the speaker to Gboko Local Government and produced Becky Orpin as the consensus candidate of the party. But Aondonna Hyacinth Dajo, the member representing Gboko West who is believed to be backed by Fr. Hyacinth Alia’s camp, is also in the contest. On the first ballot, the two candidates were tied at 16 votes each, with the clerk of the assembly noting that there would be another round of voting. The representative of Konshisha Constituency and only member of the Labour Party, Cephas Diako, called for the next round of elections to be held without the governor, the senator-elect for Benue North-West, and the party leadership. According to him, the presence of the three puts pressure on the members to vote for their preferred candidates. The house proceeded on a 10-minute break to reconvene for another round of voting for the position of speaker, allowing members to consult one another on who to vote for as speaker. However, when the second round of voting commenced, there was a shouting match among members over an alleged plot by some members to influence other members to vote for a particular candidate as speaker. For several minutes, pro-Akume and pro-Alia supporters backing their respective nominees for the position of speaker loudly called for the cancellation of the second round of voting over alleged influence on the voting process. PoliticsProfile Of New Secretary To Government Of The Federation, Sen. George Akume by phylshan(op):
George Akume is the former Governor of Benue State and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Benue North West Senatorial District. He was born on December 27, 1953 in Wannune village, Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

George had his primary education at the then Native Authority (N.A) Primary School Wannune from 1960 to 66 and then proceeded to Government Secondary School, Otobi, now Model Science School, Otukpo from 1967 to 1971 for his secondary education. He attended St. Louis College for his Advanced Level in 1972, and there after proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology graduating in 1978.

He also obtained a Masters Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR) from the same Department and University in 1986. He also went to the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) where he obtained a Certificate in Management (1988).

Before his foray into Nigerian politics, Akume worked in the Benue State civil service and rose to the position of Permanent Secretary.

After the return to democracy in 1999 Akume contested in the governorship elections, winning on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

He successfully ran for re-election in 2003 for a second term in office still on the PDP platform.

After his second tenure as the Governor of Benue State, Akume, contested for the senatorial seat of Benue North West Senatorial District in the 2007 National Assembly elections and won.

At his second time of asking in the 2011 general elections, he was successfully re-elected, this though, on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN) party.

In 2015, following the merger of the ACN and some other parties in Nigeria to form the ALL Progressives Congress (APC), Akume contested again for the senatorial position of Benue North West with the ticket of the APC and was again successful. He, then, became the Minority Leader of the Senate from June 2011 to June 2015.
The former governor was the Chairman Senate Committee on Army during his political period in the Red Chamber.
In 2019, he lost his senatorial seat to Senator Orke Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
George was appointed as the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs by former President Muhammadu Buhari on 21st August 2019.
Dr George Igbegbe Akume was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) on Friday 4th June, 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He is unassuming, urbane and highly productive. His mien anywhere he goes is writ-large as it bears his trademark sartorial elegance. Yet, he is characteristically unobtrusive. His gait and speech mannerism combine to paint a composite picture of a rare politician, who aggregates the benefits of the social contract between the government and the governed. He has consistently proved that public service, whether through the civil service or politics, is a trust, anchored in the public perception of leadership accountability as circumscribed in governance.

As former two-term Governor of Benue State, three-term Senator and former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Akume is fondly addressed as the GSM (Governor, Senator, Minister). The social media is agog with encomiums on what is now called the GSMS, the last S standing for Secretary to the Government of the Federation. In his close political circles, he is understandably referred to as the “just George,” a judge, indeed, no pun intended, of good conscience. His sagacity and capacity to deploy the same in utilitarian benefits of supporters and associates in political engagements, apparently drawing from his background as labour relations intellectual, are simply phenomenal.

As a sociologist, this largely explicates the ease with which Senator Akume understands tendencies, behavioral patterns, peculiarities of the disparate personas that congregate around and relate with him in the constantly changing shapes, contexts and contents of real politics and politicking. The intricate knowledge derived from the link between academic exertions and work place experience had prepared George Akume for public service and politics.

It could be recalled that in the build-up to the 2019 Presidential elections, Akume’s excellence in service was acknowledged by President Muhammadu Buhari with his appointment as the Vice-Chairman (North) of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. On 21 August, 2019, the popular politician was sworn-in by President Muhammadu Buhari as Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs. He has been discharging this national assignment creditably.

In recognition of his service to his community, state and the nation, Akume has so far been given a good number of awards including “Most Distinguished Alumnus” (MDA) of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA); “Honour Awards” by the Benue State and Rivers State branches of the UIAA, and a Life Member UIAA; “Distinguished Humanist Award”; “Best Performing Governor of PDP Governors from the North Central Zone”. Others are “Patron of the Institute of Public Relations”; “Fellow of the Sociological Association of Nigeria”, and “Ambassador of Peace”, among others. Akume is also a recipient of the key to the City of Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. He is very widely travelled.

PoliticsPDP Is Government In Waiting - Atiku by phylshan(op): 7:32am On Jun 04, 2023
The presidential candidate of the the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar said the PDP is “government-in-waiting.”

Atiku stated this while speaking at a retreat organised for PDP lawmakers-elect in Bauchi state on Saturday.

He said the party members must remain hopeful while waiting for the resolution of the dispute at the presidential election petition tribunal.

Recall that Atiku, who was PDP’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, was defeated by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former vice-president and the PDP are currently contesting Tinubu’s victory at the election petition tribunal.

Atiku said, “You’re representatives of the party and your constituents. Do not be tempted to abandon your party just because of temporary setback. In the end, the truth and good shall triumph over falsehood and evil,” Atiku told the lawmakers-elect.

“Therefore, you must please remain resolute. Do not work in isolation from one another. You’re a team and should always work as a team in other to achieve meaningful results and also remain connected to your roots, your constituents and other stakeholders.

“Based on the results announced by INEC and pending the determination of the electoral challenges in the court, our members-elect are not the majority in the national assembly. So, for the time being, they have to prepare to work as an effective, constructive opposition while also preparing for a possible role as the majority party when the cases are resolved.

“Don’t ever lose hope. The role of the opposition is to hold the government and majority party to account. And in doing so, you demonstrate that you and your party are ready to govern in the shortest possible time — a government-in-waiting — so to speak.”

Meanwhile, Atiku, has asked the lawmakers-elect in the national assembly to oppose any attempt by the ruling party to make the legislature a rubber stamp.

He said, “You should not be part of a rubber stamp legislative arm for those who might want to govern as dictators.

“Our democracy must endure; you can and you should help to make that happen. As you know, the PDP remains the only true political party that is owned by its members rather than by one or a handful of godfathers. That no one member or group of members is bigger better or more important than the party in the PDP.”

On the state of affairs of the PDP, Atiku said all members need to work in unity to rebuild the party.

“The work of rebuilding our party involves everyone, including our elected representatives. And it will involve unity of purpose. So, we must work hard in unifying our party. Let’s not continue to fight yesterday’s battle,” he said.

PoliticsBenue Government Immortalises Major Orkar by phylshan(op):
The outgoing administration of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Tuesday named a 9.7km road connecting Makurdi to Apir after the late Major Gideon Orkar, who was killed by a firing squad for masterminding a failed coup against the regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) in 1990.

Orkar, who hailed from Benue State, and his conspirators seized the FRCN radio station, various military posts around Lagos and the Dodan Barracks, Lagos, the military headquarters and presidential Villa.

Babangida was present when the barracks were attacked but managed to escape by a back route.

In his coup address, Orkar called for the excision of five northern states, alleging that the Babangida regime marginalised the South.

However, the coup was crushed by the Babangida regime and Orkar including 41 other coconspirators were tried, convicted of treason and were executed by firing squad on July 27, 1990.

The Commissioner for Information, Benue State, Mike Inalegwu, told journalists in Markurdi on Tuesday that the decision to immortalise Orkar was taken at the meeting of the State Executive Council.

According to the information commissioner, the State Executive Council, at its Tuesday meeting, declared that everything that Orkar said then had come to pass, hence, its decision to immortalise him.

Inalegwu said, “To recognise one of its heroes, the Executive Council today decided to name a 9km township road that burst out at Apir after the late Major Gideon Orkar.

“When Orkar came out with that broadcast, nobody took it seriously but today all that Orkar said in that broadcast has come to pass. So, we, in Benue State, have come to realise that Orkar meant well for this country.

“So, in the council meeting today, we resolved that a street should be named after Gideon Orkar and that is to tell Nigerians that Orkar had prophesied about what the country is facing today and unfortunately, he was executed. The 9.7km road that bursts out at Apir will be named after Gideon Orkar.”

PoliticsI Will Handover Power On May 28 Instead of 29 - Ortom by phylshan(op): 4:20pm On May 17, 2023
Benue State government said Governor Samuel Ortom will hand over to the incoming administration on Sunday, May 28, 2023 to avoid prolonging the event on Monday, May 29.

The commissioner for information, Michael Inalegwu who briefed journalists yesterday after the State Executive Council (SEC), meeting, said based on political reasons Ortom was denied the money which was given to all states of the federation to pay salaries, pensions and gratuities.

According to the governor, “After the official handover and Democracy Day, I will still be around for five months to establish atmosphere of cordiality with the incoming administration, before thinking of any other thing

Inalegwu said N42 billion was made to clear all the arrears owed workers and pensioners but unfortunately the governor did everything but could not access the money.

He said N20 billion was meant for rural infrastructure development.

He also disclosed that a medical practitioner, Doctor Etito Obediah Idiriakpo attached with the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi was kidnapped by yet to be identified gunmen in Makurdi.

PoliticsBuhari Mocks Ortom Over Failed Senate Bid by phylshan(op): 12:31am On Apr 20, 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday mocked the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom for failing to win his election to go to the Senate, claiming that the people of the state rejected him because of his alleged woeful performance in eight years.

The President also accused the outgoing governor of frustrating all peaceful efforts made towards solving the security situation in the state, adding that instead of embracing the government efforts, the governor was busy politicising everything thing

President Buhari via a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said that the Benue people would heave a sigh of relief that the governor is exiting office, while a more responsible governor will be mounting the saddle.

The statement entitled, “President Buhari’s Benue record speaks for itself, let the people of Benue speak for themselves too,” said governor Ortom ignored numerous intelligence reports passed to him for action.

He said, “In a series of apparently syndicated editorials, this country’s newspapers – the Daily Trust and ThisDay – have attempted to lay the blame of the dire security situation in Benue State entirely at the feet of the outgoing president. As for the man who has actually presided over Benue State for the past eight years, its outgoing governor Samuel Ortom, the editors of those publications, in their near identical articles, elected to give him a free pass.

“Fortunately, the people of Benue State know the truth. After all, it is they who have suffered under Ortom’s “leadership” – if one can call it such. It is they who have experienced first-hand the mass killings, the torture, the litany of atrocities as Benue’s security situation plummeted ever further. It is they who buried their loved ones while watching their careless, irresponsible and incompetent governor politicise on those freshly dug graves.

“And it is they who turned to the last privilege they had left: their democratic privilege, to resoundingly kick out Ortom and his so-called People’s Democratic Party in favour of a new governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Iornem Alia from Buhari’s party, the APC.

“But since the Daily Trust and ThisDay may not be as well informed as their Benue compatriots, this blatant rewriting of history must be addressed. For their education, we humbly submit a list – far from exhaustive – of the steps taken personally by President Buhari to address the deteriorating situation in Benue. These were, in many cases, roundly ignored – if not outright obstructed – by former Governor Ortom:

“i. A number of in-person meetings with the Governor of Benue State and other community leaders, assuring them of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting farmers and communities.

“ii. The establishment and funding of Joint Security Operations, code-named Operation Whirl Stroke (OWS). To date, the OWS Team remains in place. A number of OWS security agents have given their lives protecting the people of Benue. Many were endangered further by Ortom’s fake news and disinformation campaigns, and his unwillingness to engage with the project.

“iii. The deployment of special security forces to flash-points in the State including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies.

“iv. The deployment of an array of NAF fighter aircraft, Mi-35 helicopter gunships as well as Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms.

“v. The Deployment of ten (10) Units of the Police Mobile Force, Ten (10) Units of Police Special Forces (Tactical Operation Units) and Aerial Surveillance Teams (Police Helicopters).

“vi. The Acquisition and deployment of modern military armaments.

“vii. The provision of timely and actionable intelligence to Ortom (which was routinely ignored).

“viii. The prompt provision of humanitarian support to victims via the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.”

He further said, “Despite these efforts, we know that the new Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has his work cut out. In his own words, he is inheriting a State that is in the Intensive Care Unit. Perhaps if disgraced Governor Ortom had been more concerned with doing his job than politicising the tragedies so frequently taking place under his watch, the situation in Benue might be very different, like in any of its neighbours – Taraba, Nasarawa, the FCT – which all enjoy peace.

“Instead, Ortom stubbornly refused to engage with the detailed, holistic approach clearly spelt out by the Federal Government. He arrogantly chose his own, destructive path. He blamed the Fulani for every problem that arose. He ignored numerous intelligence reports passed to him for action. He rejected police findings in investigations that didn’t meet his egotistical worldview. He politicized every life lost on his watch.

“So, thank God the people of Benue rejected him so roundly at elections. His contract was not renewed. He failed a Senate election. Even the person he endorsed for Governorship was rejected.

“They know better than anyone else the true reasons for the situation in Benue. If anyone is looking for someone to blame, just ask the people of Benue.”

PoliticsI Can Make Appointments Till May 29 - Ortom by phylshan(op): 8:35pm On Mar 30, 2023
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said he can make appointments on May 29, 2023 when his administration ends.

The governor who stated this while replying to those lamenting about appointments he has made.

The governor who spoke through the chief press secretary Nathaniel Ikyur during an interview with our correspondent in his office said Governor Ortom has the right to appoint anybody in his cabinet as long as May 29 has not come.

He said, “from now to 11:pm of May 29th 2023 the Governor is free to make any appointment, so people lamenting about the governor’s last minute appointment are on their own”

Recall that the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), raised the alarm over alleged planned appointments by Governor Samuel Ortom at the wee hour of his administration.

The publicity secretary of APC, Daniel Ihomun, in a statement, said the party has gotten reliable information that Governor Ortom plans to appoint new permanent secretaries and give accelerated promotions.

According to him, “we members of the APC wondered why Ortom would be making appointments at the twilight of his tenure when he suppose to be writing his hand over note”

He alleged that the new appointees according to information would be strategically placed in selected ministries to constitute impediments to the incoming administration.

According to him, “we want to advise those whose names have been penciled down for such appointments, promotions and placements to reject the offer for their good”

“We want you to have it at the back of their minds that those who refuse to heed to this warning and take up such appointments will be treated as saboteurs and enemies of the incoming administration.”

PoliticsBenue: Police Arrests Three Suspects Over Death Of Young Lady In Hotel by phylshan(op): 3:36pm On Mar 22, 2022
The Benue State police command has arrested three persons in connection with the death of a young lady in a hotel in Benue state.

The Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, SP Catherine Anene, disclosed this while confirming the incident in Makurdi.

The Next Edition gathered that a young lady was reportedly found dead, last weekend, at a hotel around the Nyiman area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Sources who refused to be named said the lady, of about 20 years, had lodged into the hotel with a man, yet to be identified, but was later found dead in the room.

While some of the sources say the deceased lady must have died during a sex romp with her partner, others further allege that she was killed and her private part removed and taken away by the “Yahoo boy” for ritual purposes.

Confirming the report, the Police PPRO, Anene did not confirm the rumour that her private part was removed.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State says the prohibition of herders from grazing openly in some states will not work.

At a summit which held in Asaba, Delta State capital, two months ago, the Southern governors had unanimously banned open grazing, attributing this to the clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

When he featured on a Channels TV programme on Wednesday, Zulum said the ban will not work until the insecurity and economic crisis are addressed.

“We have to address the socio-political and economic dimensions of this crisis which is very important because there is increasing poverty in the sub-region; that is something that will trigger insurgency.”

“There is increasing food insecurity in the sub-region because food insecurity is the worst form of insecurity and that is why the Borno State Government has been advocating for farming in the last two years. Farmers should be allowed to go to their farm lands.

“The issue of the socio-political and economic dimensions of this crisis is very important; addressing farmers-herders is also very important, to ensure that the enabling environment has been created to the herders is very important. This issue of stopping open grazing and others will not work unless we sit down and address all these issues squarely.”
