Politics / Governor Wike: Hold FG Responsible If Ortom Is Assassinated by phylshan: 10:30pm On Mar 20, 2021
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has warned that the Federal Government will be held responsible if his counterpart in Benue State, Samuel Ortom, is assassinated.

He insisted that if Ortom was killed, the country would be plunged into another civil war.

Wike spoke while reacting to attempt on Governor Ortom’s life by 15 gunmen, who reportedly trailed him to a river bank in Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday.
Wike in a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said: “If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria.”

Wike recalled how a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains concluded plan to assassinate him during the 2019 general election.

Wike described as disturbing the growing trend of threatening the lives of incumbent governors.

Politics / Breaking: EU Reports Nigeria To WTO by phylshan: 12:39pm On Mar 16, 2021
The European Union has reported Nigeria to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The complaint was about Nigeria’s policy on dairy.

Director General of the WTO Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made this disclosure in Abuja on Tuesday when she visited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Okonjo-Iweala said the WTO has received a letter from the European Union complaining about Nigeria’s restrictions on milk and diary products.

She said the WTO will look into the complaint but urged Nigerian to take advantage of the trade remedy initiative in place at the WTO to protect local industries.

Reacting, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, said the process to bring milk and dairy producers has been on for six years with the milk and diary producers treating the matter with levity.

One of the producers, he said, has been in Nigeria for over 60 years and has not deemed it necessary to engage in backward integration rather but is comfortable importing products.

Details shortly…

Politics / Dep. Speaker: Nigerians In Diaspora Have No Right To Complain Of Our Insecurity by phylshan: 6:54am On Mar 16, 2021
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase has declared Nigerians in the Diaspora have no right sending petitions to the House on issues happening in Nigeria.

Specifically, he said they have no right to complain about insecurity since they don’t live around.

Wase, who represents Wase Federal Constituency, Plateau State, said this at a plenary last Thursday while sitting in for Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

He said Nigerians who sit in their comfort zones abroad are not eligible to file petitions against the Federal Government on issues regarding insecurity.

He spoke when a lawmaker, Mark Gbillah, representing Gwer East-Gwer West constituency of Benue State, attempted to submit a petition filed by Mzough U Tiv Amerika on insecurity in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba.

Gbillah had explained he was submitting the petition on behalf of MUTA because indigenes of the affected states had been sacked from their ancestral lands.

Before he could speak further, however, Wase, who is of the ruling All Progressives Congress, said: “Honourable Gbillah, did you say Tivs in America? What do they know about Nigeria?

“What is their business? They can’t sit in their comfort zones and know what is happening in Nigeria.”

The Deputy Speaker argued Nigerians abroad have no rights to file a petition on the crisis, stating that it would be understandable “if this petition is coming from those who are within the country.”

Gbillah argued that Nigerians abroad should be able to file complaints because they have family members residing in the state.

Wase quickly countered by asking if MUTA was duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

But Gbillah responded by saying Section 40 of the constitution does not stop citizens from freedom of association.

Gbillah argued that Nigeria had been pursuing a policy of inclusiveness for its citizens in the Diaspora, an aim that would easily be defeated if the same category of Nigerians cannot be allowed to speak on raging matters of national concern.

“I’ll refer you to the functions of the committee on Diaspora, if you go through that, it is nothing relevant to what you’re now presenting, I’m not convinced that we have to take that petition,” Wase said.

Gbillah’s petition was subsequently rejected without any opposition from any member in the chamber

Politics / Dokubo's Biafra Government's Declaration, A Joke Taken Too Far - FG by phylshan: 5:42pm On Mar 15, 2021
Asari Dokubo's Biafran Declaration A Joke Made By Attention Seeker, Nigerian Government Says
Dokubo, who is the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force, had declared the formation of the purported government on Sunday and also named those who would serve as leaders in the government alongside himself.

The Nigerian government has described the reported formation of the Biafra Customary Government by Asari Dokubo as a joke that is meant to entertain.

Dokubo, who is the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force, had declared the formation of the purported government on Sunday and also named those who would serve as leaders in the government alongside himself.

He added that they would proceed to set up provincial structures for the new government.

Speaking on the development in Lagos on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari would not be distracted by what he described as, “theatre of the absurd by a joker seeking attention’’.

Mohammed said Dokubo is free to run a phantom government, stressing that the Buhari-led administration will not be distracted.

He said, “I am sure you have heard of the theatre of the absurd; that is the best way I can describe it.

“If Asari Dokubo wants to form and run a phantom government, I think he is free to do so. This administration will not be distracted because we still have a lot to do.

“We are not ready to give any attention or time to a joker like Dokubo who is just looking for attention. We will just take it as one of these entertainment things.

“The beauty about Nigeria is that it is never a dull country; you must have one thing or the other to entertain you.”

Dokubo on Sunday declared himself the leader of the new Biafra defacto Customary Government (BCG).

In a statement signed by Uche Mefor, BCG’s Head of Information and Communications, the former militant leader named those who would serve as leaders in the government alongside himself.

He said, “We as people have resolved that as Biafra, it’s time for us to take our destiny in our hands and bring freedom to ourselves and our children and the generation of Biafrans yet unborn. I hesitate a little but I thank God that it’s time for us to do our duty and our service to motherland, I have accepted this role. I have dedicated my life hundred percent to play this role.

“My first act today in taking this position is to name those who would be on the driver’s seat to navigate through this period of tempest, this period of uncertainty with me. I want to call on our brother, George Onyibe to come on board to join as the secretary of the defacto customary government of the State of Biafra. He will take care of the administrative, day-to-day administration of the Biafra State.

“I also call on our brother Emeka Emeka Esiri to take care of the legal needs of this nascent government. My brothers and sisters, the four of us will kick start the process, others will come on board. We want volunteers who are committed. We want volunteers because there is nothing anymore. We are the people who have volunteered to salvage ourselves and the rest of us.

“I also call on Biafrans in the various provinces of the Biafra nations in Aba, Abakiliki, Anang, Awka, Calabar, Degema, Eket, Enough, Nsuka, Ogoja, Oji River, Okigwe, Onitsha, Opobo, Orlu, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia, Uyo and Yenegoa province. We are going to proceed to set up provincial structures of government starting with provincial assemblies and provincial governance and administrators.”

Dokubo also mentioned education and agriculture as key areas of focus. He condemned the recent stoppage of food transportation to the South.

Crime / Pastor Bulus Relocates From Borno After Being Released By Boko Haram by phylshan: 8:17pm On Mar 08, 2021
After Surviving Two Months In Boko Haram Captivity, Pastor Bulus, Family Relocate From Borno
SaharaReporters learnt that after observing a church thanksgiving in Pemi village in the Chibok Local Government Area last Friday, Yikura, his wife and three children left the community.

Pastor Bulus Yikura, who was miraculously freed by the Boko Haram terrorists last Wednesday after being given a seven-day deadline to live, has fled Chibok in Borno State with his family members in search of a safer environment.

SaharaReporters learnt that after observing a church thanksgiving in Pemi village in the Chibok Local Government Area last Friday, Yikura, his wife and three children left the community.

SaharaReporters was told that the pastor had relocated to another town in another North-East state – the specifics of which have been withheld for security reasons.

Pastor Yikura was abducted on December 24, 2020, and he had drawn public sympathy when he, in the last week of February, appeared in a video sent by the Boko Haram terrorists, begging President Muhammadu Buhari, the Borno State government, and the Christian Association of Nigeria to secure his release.

He had been given seven days by the terrorists to live.

Last Wednesday, Yikura was freed on the final day of the ultimatum and was initially received by operatives of the Department of State Services in Maiduguri.

A family source told SaharaReporters on Monday that Pastor Yikura left Chibok and moved his property out on Friday.

“Bulus came back to his wife and three children on Friday. It was a pleasant reunion. The whole church community welcomed him. He started moving all his property the same day, and he left Chibok. He has left Borno State.

“There was a big thanksgiving at his church in Pemi Village in Chibok. But in these circumstances, we advised him to relocate immediately. Chibok is still very vulnerable and the entire Borno State, as we speak. So, he is off to start a new life in another state,” the family source said.

Politics / No Fire Incident In Aso Rock Villa- Garba Shehu by phylshan: 6:55pm On Mar 08, 2021
BUSH FIRE INCIDENT RECORDED OUTSIDE VILLA PERIMETER

People in the country and even abroad have been expressing concerns over reports of a fire incident in Aso Rock Villa, the seat of the Nigerian government.

I would like to clarify that there was no fire inside the Presidential Villa.

In the evening of Saturday, March 6, a fire broke out burning shrubs between the outer wire fence and walls surrounding the Villa, precisely in the area between the Villa and the Barracks, towards Asokoro.

The fire, as being speculated, might have started from a passerby dropping a burning cigarette. The Federal Fire Service will ascertain the reason for it when they complete their investigation.

It suffices to say that this bush fire, which started and ended outside the perimeter walls of the Villa, was seamlessly contained by fire stations of the State House and the one nearby from the Federal Fire Service. No loss of life, no loss whatsoever to building and property was recorded.

We thank well-meaning Nigerians for expressed concerns.

Education / I Voluntarily Dropped Out As A 500 Level Medical Student- Wheelbarrow Pusher by phylshan: 2:54pm On Mar 06, 2021
BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORK MARCH 06, 2021

A 43-year-old wheelbarrow pusher in Benue State, Terhemen Anongo, has explained that he dropped out of the University of Ibadan Medical School at 500 Level due to depression caused by the unfriendly academic environment.

Anongo noted that he left UI and returned to Gboko town in Benue State to start a new life by pushing a wheelbarrow since he was not willing to get married.

Speaking with PUNCH in an interview, the 43-year-old noted that he wanted to study Petroleum Engineering specifically but his father insisted on his choice of Medicine, which later led to depression for him.

He said, “Yes, I was admitted into the University of Ibadan in the 1996/97 session (as a medical student) and by 2000 I moved on to the teaching hospital, UCH (University College Hospital), but I dropped out when I was in 500 Level because I was suffering from severe depression, which made me lose interest in medical school. Though at a point, I tried to go back, the authorities did not allow me.

“I am based in Gboko, Benue State, where I work as a porter, pushing a wheelbarrow. First of all, it was never my desire to study Medicine. I graduated from secondary school and had the best results. I loved Physics and Mathematics, so I wanted to study Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, to be precise. I got the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination form and filled it and took it to my dad, a Mathematics teacher but my dad said no; he said he had some Indian teachers who told him that the best course for me to study was Medicine.

“But when I got to medical school, I realised that Medicine is about cramming, memorising terminologies whose origin you don’t know. So, I lost interest in academic work but I still managed to pass and got to the teaching hospital.

“The way the University of Ibadan is structured, the people there are not friendly, though, is the best medical school. I remember a girl who came from the United States for a programme in UI; before she left, she told the Head of Department that their approach was too harsh; that the environment was not friendly. If you don’t know something, you are not confident to say you don’t know it. That, coupled with my lack of interest, made me quit.”

Anongo noted that he attempted to “go back to take another course, at least to change from Medicine to Psychology, but they refused. I tried other universities, including the University of Maiduguri and Benue State University, to see if I could switch course, they all refused.”

“Yes, I lost interest in academic work; at a point, I thought of suicide; I almost cut off my radial artery so that I could end it all. I am now in Gboko, working as a porter, pushing a wheelbarrow.

“My dad is no more alive but my mum is alive. What she is trying to do now is to set up a chemist shop for me; she has got a shop and I am trying to raise money so I can put some drugs in the shop,” he added.

Religion / Breaking: Pope Francis Makes Unprecedented Visit To Iraq. by phylshan: 4:16pm On Mar 05, 2021
BAGHDAD — Pope Francis on Friday began the first-ever papal trip to Iraq, landing in a country with an extraordinary biblical history but that is also experiencing a serious coronavirus outbreak and ongoing political turmoil.

Francis’s four-day visit is his first international trip since the start of the pandemic and marks a return to the globe-trotting diplomacy — especially to minority-Christian countries — that had been his hallmark. It amounts to a show of encouragement for a nation trying to recover from the chaos of a U.S.-led invasion and the brutality of the Islamic State, a group that once vowed to “conquer Rome.”

Some have questioned why he is choosing to make the trip now, given the multitude of threats. Militias are competing for power and launching rocket attacks. The Islamic State has been beaten back but not fully eliminated. And coronavirus cases have climbed higher and higher over the past month, prompting the Iraqi government to impose a curfew and other restrictions, including against religious gatherings.

But in choosing to travel in the face of the risks, to a country known foremost for its war scars and suffering, Francis has reassembled some of the ingredients that years earlier made his papacy feel so novel. He is traveling at a time when other global figures are staying put, attempting to preach reconciliation in a country where decades of efforts have failed.

Speaking briefly aboard the papal plane on the way to Baghdad, Francis called the trip “emblematic” and said he was duty-bound to visit a nation that has been “martyred for so many years.”

“I am happy to be traveling again,” the pope said.

The Vatican had said Francis’s events will include smaller crowds than unusual, as a way to decrease the risk of coronavirus transmission. But thousands nonetheless lined highway roads hoping to get a glimpse of the pope, and in closer proximity to the pontiff, who has been vaccinated, some of the safety measures seemed lax. Unmasked singers, crowded together, greeted Francis at the airport, as did Iraqi dignitaries lining a red carpet.

In his first remarks of the trip, at Iraq’s presidential palace, Francis provided a broad view of his hopes for society trying to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic. He called not only for the equitable distribution of vaccines, but also — noting Iraq’s sectarian conflicts — said it was time for humanity to embrace “what unites us.”

“In this regard, the religious, cultural and ethnic diversity that has been a hallmark of Iraqi society for millennia is a precious resource on which to draw, not an obstacle to be eliminated,” the pope said.

Francis was expected to later speak to bishops and other religious figures at the Our Lady of Salvation Church, where in 2010 gunmen from an affiliate of al-Qaeda killed 58 people.

The Benue State government has today banned the use of the car popularity referred to as Duck Nyash' in the Sankera axis of the State.
This was disclosed by Terver Akase, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Samuel Ortom after the State's security council meeting held at the People's House in Makurdi.
The brand of car banned by the council was used in assassinating Dr. Terkula Suswam, who is an elder brother to former Governor of the State, Senator Gabriel Suswam.
