Science/TechnologySome Fish Are Born To Lead by pisolution(op):
Leadership is an innate quality, according to a fish study that predicted trouble in animal social groups, also human ones, when natural roles are reversed.

Groups tend to perform better with a combination of willing followers and strong leaders, which in most animal species are bolder, more extroverted individuals.

But incentives, like higher salaries for humans, can cause natural followers to become leaders, and scientists have long debated the desirability of such role reversal.

To probe whether natural followers can be turned into leaders and vice versa, a research team studied stickleback fish – a group foraging species known to have bold and shy individuals.

First, they studied the fish in large laboratory tanks for several weeks to separate the leaders from the followers.

Leaders were more prone to leave the deep, covered, ‘safe’ area of a tank and travel through ‘risky’, shallow waters to get to a feeding station.

The fish were then divided into pairs, each with one bold and one shy member, the team wrote in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

In one experiment, the fish were rewarded with food for displaying their natural behaviour – the leader for initiating a trip and the follower for trailing behind. In a second, they were rewarded for role reversal – the shy fish for each time it initiated a foraging trip and the bolder one for following.

‘Our prediction was that bold individuals would perform poorly when forced to adopt the role of follower, considering that they are less responsive to other individuals’ behaviour,’ study co-author Shinnosuke Nakayama of the University of Cambridge’s zoology department told AFP by email.

The opposite turned out to be true: leader fish were much quicker to adopt a follower role than the other way round.

‘Fish can learn to follow but struggle to learn to lead,’ said Nakayama of the findings.

‘We found that leaders are born, not made,’ added a study summary.

The role reversal also had an impact on group success.

When incentivised to act against their natural instincts, fewer foraging excursions resulted in both members of a pair being fed.

The team said their findings raised intriguing questions for the broader study of group behaviour.

‘Strong positive effects of personality variation are only likely to emerge when members of a group are free to establish their own roles, such that bolder (or, in the human case, more extroverted) individuals can assume leadership,’ the study suggested.

It would appear to ‘be better for us to adopt social roles of leader and follower in the way we feel natural’, added Nakayama.

PoliticsMan Charged For Using Mugabe Poster As Toilet Paper by pisolution(op):
HARARE: A Zimbabwean man has been charged for allegedly using President Robert Mugabe’s election campaign poster as toilet paper, local media reported Wednesday.

Takura Mufumisi, 26, from the southern city of Masvingo, is said to have taken the paper with him to a bar toilet.

An informant reportedly spotted him tearing up the poster with Mugabe’s image while inside the toilet and made a citizen’s arrest.

“Public prosecutor Mukai Mutumbe told the court that on July 24 this year, Mufumisi entered Landmark bar in the city with the intention to relieve himself in the bar toilets,” the paper reported.

He has been accused of violating electoral laws.

In Zimbabwe it is a crime to pull down election campaign posters. His case has been adjourned indefinitely by a Magistrate’s Court.

Mr. Obasanjo said he designed it to operate on three mediums: ground, water and air, but has only achieved two due to financial constraints. But for now, the invention can only run on ground and water.

Science/TechnologyPaypal Testing Face-verification System For Mobile Payments - Watch Video + Pics by pisolution(op): 6:30pm On Aug 25, 2013
While we’re not quite scanning retinas à la Mission Impossible and Minority Report, PayPal is now testing face verification for mobile-payment transactions.

The ecommerce company’s app has a tab labeled “Local,” which helps users find nearby stores and restaurants that accept mobile PayPal payments. Once customers check in to a venue online, their name and photo appear on the store’s PayPal app. Shoppers can then use the app to pay for items (cashiers complete the transaction by clicking on their profile pic).

“We’re pleased to help local businesses of all sizes offer a new more personal experience, while never having to turn away customers who don’t have enough cash on them to pay,” Rob Harper, head of retail services at PayPal, said in a release.

What’s more, the app could act as a preventative measure against identity theft.

Select businesses in London began testing PayPal’s face-verification feature and app earlier this month.

Nairaland GeneralWoman Turns Up Alive 13 Days After Her Funeral - Watch Video by pisolution(op): 9:23pm On Aug 24, 2013
Thirteen days after saying their final farewells to a Sharolyn Jackson, a Philadelphia family got a pleasant surprise when they found Jackson alive and well.

The fifty-year-old was pronounced dead after a body matching her description was found on a street corner on July 20. (Via Daily Mirror)

The body was identified as Jackson by her son and a friend, and was buried under Jackson’s name on August 3. (Via Legacy)

But just 13 days after her funeral, Jackson’s son Travis discovered his mother alive and well at a psychiatric institution in central Philadelphia. (Via New York Daily News)

Jackson’s father, Dave Minnie, told KYW about the moment he learned his daughter was alive after all.

“You know how you feel that you’re just about to get over it? That she’s dead, and then Travis comes here with the news that she’s alive.”

Jackson’s family was obviously overjoyed to have her back, but the question remains: who is buried in Jackson’s grave? The Daily Mail says authorities are trying to find that out.

A writer for The Stir comments the mystery woman the Jacksons laid to rest must put a bit of a damper on the family’s reunion.

“Sure, your mom is OK, but who knows who this other woman has left behind … and they haven’t even had the comfort of being able to say goodbye to their loved one. Talk about a mixed blessing!”

Authorities are now seeking a court order to exhume the body. The unknown woman died of natural causes on July 20.

BusinessGuaranty Trust Bank Fined $815,000 By U.K. FCA For Failings by pisolution(op): 9:22am On Aug 10, 2013
Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GUARANTY)’s British unit was fined 525,000 pounds ($815,000) by the U.K. markets regulator for failing to have controls in place to prevent money laundering.

The Lagos, Nigeria-based lender’s unit failed to document risks posed by higher-risk customers when it set up a London office in 2008, the Financial Conduct Authority said in an e-mailed statement today.

“Banks are at the front line in ensuring the proceeds of crime do not enter the U.K. financial system,” Tracey McDermott, director of enforcement at the FCA, said in the statement. “GT Bank’s failures were serious and systemic and resulted in an unacceptable risk of handling the proceeds of crime.”

Guaranty Trust Bank opened a U.K. office in 2008 offering retail and wholesale banking to private and corporate clients, according to the regulator.

“We have fully co-operated with the FCA in its investigation and we have accepted the findings,” Ade Adebiyi, managing director of the U.K. unit, said in an e-mailed statement. “The FCA found no evidence that GTB UK did in fact handle any proceeds of crime.”

The bank received the FCA’s standard 30 percent discount for settling early.

Nairaland GeneralFree Bus Ride For Lagosians On Eid-el-fitri by pisolution(op): 2:12am On Aug 08, 2013
The Lagos State Government will provide free bus ride to Nigerians living in Lagos on Friday, 9 August, 2013 to ease movement during the Eid-Il-Fitr celebration.

The free bus ride, according to a statement by the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, would in particular enable Muslim faithful have easy access to different praying centres across the State.

Mobereola said the free bus service, which began in 2008 had helped in reducing congestion and accident on the roads during festive periods, adding that the service would run for 13 hours starting at 7.00am and ending at 10.00pm.

He said the first BRT Cooperative, operator of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) would offer free services on Mile 12 –CMS, Mile 12 – Obalende, Ajah to National Stadium, Ajah – Obalende, Mile 12 – National Stadium, Mile 2 – National Stadium, Oshodi – Obalende and Oshodi – National Stadium routes.

Science/TechnologyCybercrime Costs Companies Dearly by pisolution(op): 12:00am On Aug 06, 2013
Cape Town - Cybercrime has a devastating impact on the bottom line of large companies, new research has found.

According to the research by B2B International in conjunction with Kaspersky Lab, the average cost of security breach at a large firm is $649 000.

The 2013 Global Corporate IT Security Risks painted a bleak picture of the security threat landscape as it affects companies at a time when many are concerned about the integrity of data, particularly when it is stored in an online database.

To get an accurate estimate of the damage from a cyber attack, B2B considered losses from the actual attack - including the loss of intellectual property and the ability of the company to continue business operations.

Other costs were then added to the total. These costs may include the hiring of experts to prevent future attacks and hardware updates.

Largest losses

"After crunching the numbers, it appears that the lion's share of losses are caused by the incident itself - lost opportunities and profits, as well as payments to third-party remediation specialists, average out at $566 000," said Kaspersky.

While costs of damage varied widely depending on the kind of company targeted and the operational dynamic of a particular firm, the survey found that organisation operating in the US incurred the largest losses at an average of $818 000.

The average in Europe was lower at $627 000 but the lowest overall was in Russia at $21 000.

The report found that some companies are reluctant to report incidents of intrusion.

"A leak of sensitive data often means that the affected company must publicly disclose information about the incident.
About 73% of respondents stated that they had to distribute information about an incident because a third party had demanded that they do so," the report said.

The survey found that 15% of companies report a data breach to the media, while 44% report it to affected customers and clients.

Targeted attacks

Attacks on companies have become targeted in recent years and hackers have begun using specialist tools to infiltrate networks.

"Of those 415 investigations we conducted last year, the vast majority we saw in each of those cases was bespoke so it wasn't something that was off the shelf or that was used in many different organisations - it was written with a very specific purpose in mind and was only used once," John Yeo EMEA director at Trustwave told News24.

He said that signature-based antivirus software that was deployed to stop malware could not cope with this kind of attack.

"Signature-based antivirus hasn't got a hope of being able to detect it and any organisation that thinks 'I've got antivirus deployed on my mission critical systems and if the worst case scenario happens, I'm going to detect it,' that's not going to happen."

The survey found that malware made up the largest portion of attacks at 22% though accidental data leaks by staff (10%) and flaws in existing software (11%) were also significant factors. According to the survey, malware, viruses and worms made up 66% of IT threats, significantly higher than spam (61%), phishing (36%).

Science/TechnologyInternational Research Team Discovers New Mineral by pisolution(op): 6:11pm On Aug 05, 2013
Nearly as hard a diamond, qingsongite was found in Tibet by UC Riverside geologists

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Geologists at the University of California, Riverside have discovered a new mineral, cubic boron nitride, which they have named “qingsongite.”

The discovery, made in 2009, was officially approved this week by the International Mineralogical Association.

The UC Riverside geologists, Larissa Dobrzhinetskaya and Harry Green in the Department of Earth Sciences, were joined by scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the University of Maine and from institutions in China and Germany in making the discovery.

“The uniqueness of qingsongite is that it is the first boron mineral that was found to be formed at extreme conditions in deep Earth,” Dobrzhinetskaya said. “All other known boron minerals are found at Earth’s surface.”

The mineral was found in the southern Tibetan mountains of China within chromium-rich rocks of the paleooceanic crust that was subducted to a depth of 190 miles and recrystallized there at a temperature of about 2372 degrees Fahrenheit and pressure of about 118430 atmospheres.

“About 180 million years ago the rocks were returned back to shallow levels of the Earth by plate tectonic processes leading to the closure of the huge Paleo-Thethys ocean — an ancient Paleozoic ocean — and the collision of India with the Asian lithospheric plate,” Dobrzhinetskaya explained.

Until now, cubic boron nitride, created first in the laboratory in 1957, was known as an important technological material. Because its atomic structure bears resemblance to carbon bonds in diamond, it has high density and could be as hard as diamond.

To date, more than 4700 species of minerals have been recognized, with at least 100 proposals for new minerals and their names submitted each year to the International Mineralogical Association for approval.

Qingsongite was named after Qingsong Fang (1939-2010), a professor at the Institute of Geology, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, who found the first diamond in the Tibetan chromium-rich rocks in the late 1970s, and contributed to the discovery of four new mineral species.

The scientific project that led to the discovery of qingsongite was supported by grants from the University of California Laboratory Fees Research Program and the National Science Foundation.

The University of California, Riverside (http://www.ucr.edu) is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California’s diverse culture, UCR’s enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students.

BusinessMan Uses Fake Bank Alert To Steal N5m by pisolution(op): 5:54pm On Aug 05, 2013
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a suspected fraudster, Wale Olaide, aka Wale Dollar, for using a fake bank credit alert to defraud a bureau de change operator, Abdulhamid Abubakar, of N5m.

EFCC’s Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspect, who was an expert in defrauding unsuspecting victims through fraudulent bank credit alerts, contacted Abubakar’s younger brother, Hashim, also a bureau de change operator based in Lome, Togo, that he wanted to purchase N5m equivalent in CFA.

He said, “Olaide requested for his (Hashim) Nigerian bank account to enable him to pay in the naira equivalent. Hashim asked Abubakar to send his First Bank account details to Olaide.

“Abubakar sent his account details and later received an alert supposedly from his bank that N5m had been credited to his account. Upon receiving the alert, Abubakar informed his brother, who in turn released the CFA equivalent of N5m to Olaide.”

It was learnt that when Abubakar visited the bank to withdraw the money the following day, his account balance did not reflect the transaction. He subsequently reported the incident to the EFCC.

Wilson said, “A series of investigations led to the arrest of Olaide who is believed to be a member of a syndicate involved in duping unsuspecting members of the public through fraudulent bank notification alerts.

“EFCC is working to unravel the network of operations of the syndicate. But members of the public should be wary of this new trend in crime by fraudsters who use phony credit alerts to defraud people.”

BusinessTotal Mobile Data Subscription Hits 57.7 Million In June by pisolution(op): 5:16pm On Aug 05, 2013
Following the recent release of the number of subscribers that have ported from one network to the other, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the weekend released the total number of data subscribers on the telecoms operators’ networks, totalling 57.7 million.

The figure, which was a collation of data subscriptions as at June 2013, showed an increase in the number of data subscriptions from May 2013, which stood at 44.6 million. Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, who released the figures, told THISDAY that data subscription was fast growing like voice subscription, which currently stands at over 117 million across networks.

Of the 57.7 million connected data subscribers in June, 48.3 million were active, while 38.3 million were active data subscribers in May, according to Ojobo.

A breakdown of the 48.3 million active data subscribers showed that MTN, which has the largest number of voice subscribers, also led in data subscription with 24.5 million active subscribers in June on its data network.

Airtel came a distant second with 9.2 million data subscriptions, followed by Globacom with 9.1 million data subscribers and Etisalat with 5.1 million on its network.

Among Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators, Visafone leads the group with 127,399 data subscribers, followed by Starcomms with 23,167 data subscribers and MultiLinks with 16,190 subscribers on its network.

Smaller operators such as VGC Communications, accounted for 7,010 subscribers, while 21st Century Technology has 5,481 data subscribers.

Pleased with the increase from 38.3 million active data subscribers in May to 48.3 million in June, Ojobo said the 10 million increase within a space of one month, was indicative that the number of data subscriptions in the country would triple before the end of the year.

Ojobo, who attributed the growth to several combined factors, said the rising rate in the use of smartphone devices, especially among Nigerian youths, contributed to the growth.

“Apart from smartphone devices, which Nigerians now use for data and voice communications, there is this growing awareness among Nigerians on digital inclusion.

Christianity EtcBilly Graham:if Ever There Was A Time America Needed God’s Intervention,it’s Now by pisolution(op): 2:36pm On Aug 04, 2013
I stumbled on an article online, but I think the message is not only for American but the whole world. You can read more about the article here http://www.magazine.believersboard.com/billy-graham-if-ever-there-was-a-time-america-needed-gods-intervention-its-now/

We really need to pray. Please, its high time we Christians begin to commit the heart of the sinners and politicians into the hand of God. If we do nothing, the devil will use them and we Christians will really pay for it.

Look now, gay marriage. You can't imagine, people suing a Church for not performing their gay marriage ceremony in their Church. The world is really going upside down and its really high time we Christians take it serious and pray fervently.

God help us.
