CHAINS: The Fear Street Gunfight.
'' I am on a mission to never forget 3000 people I
have never met
We want some answers and all that we get
Some kind of shit about a terrorist threat
Lies lies lies lies lies lies''
-Ministry
***
Fear Street's actually Fia Street, but people have
been pronouncing it that way for so long that it
stuck. I grew up right in the middle of Fear Street, my
older brother Obinna and I stepping over broken
bottles, used condoms, cigarette stubs and beer cans
when we walked home from school. The smell of
urine, unease and depression hanging over our heads
like a jinx.
The houses on Fear Street were low cost, run down
and very overcrowded apartments with face-me
rooms standing side by side along passages so
narrow neighbours often collided in the dark when
NEPA was at it for the zillionth time. There was a
common joke in Fear Street: weather report for
tonight: dark.
We moved to Fear Street after my father was killed
by a hit and run barely two months after getting the
new job he spent forty days fasting for.
'' God has really got a twisted sense of humour,''
mama had said that day. But there was no bitterness
in her voice, only a certain resignation. A
shoulderless shrug.
The first thing you learn when you move into Fear
Street is that it was home to the Chain Gang. The
second thing you learn when you move into Fear
Street is never wear a chain, unless you want to get
beaten, mugged have it snatched off your neck. The
story was told of a dude who came from America and
was visiting some old friends in Fear Street. He had a
rolex, cornrows and a whooping eight chains. The
Chain Gang Soldiers-as they called themselves-
ambushed him in broad day light and stripped him of
everything, even his silver earrings.
What they didn't know was the dude was a friend to
Mamba Jack, the most feared cultist this side of
heaven. The next day, six men in motorbikes rode
round Fear Street, their guns thundering vicious
death rattles on anyone they found on the street with
a chain around his neck. The Chain Gang leader had
to sue for peace with thousands of naira.
My worst memory of Fear Street was the December
26, Boxing day gunfight. That took place after we had
been in Fear Street for six years. By then, I was done
with secondary school and teaching in an
unregistered private school three streets away, my
mother still worked a 9 to 8 job in a hospital while
my older brother walked the streets, his muscles
swollen from the hours lifting weights, his head
shaved, dark glasses on his face and on his neck, a
whooping six chains.
I don't know when he joined the gang. I guess we
were not close enough for me to notice the changes. I
just woke one morning to find mama shouting at my
brother, her voice bouncing off the walls angrily, its
echo a ricochet of panic, fear and disappointment.
My brother stood with that bored and Bleep-you-too
stance of his. Hand in pocket, other hand patting
back a yawn, foot tapping the floor, eyes scanning
the room, everything except the yelling woman with
glasses and a grey head still full of hair.
'' What do you think you are doing! '' mama
screamed. '' God, what sort of idiot did I bring up?
What good will those riffraffs bring you apart from
nails for your coffin? Can you see your life? After all I
went through to give you an education, you want to
throw everything away by joining a gang of fools who
die with their shoes on? Eh? What is in it for you?
Answer me, Obinna!''
I wished I could speak up, to answer for him. To tell
her it was all about three things; power, respect and
guts. My brother probably felt the same way all the
boys growing up in Fear Street did. He needed to
earn some respect, he needed to be feared. To walk
the streets knowing he couldn't be touched. That he
was covered by the immunity of the gang.
Instead I watched him storm out suddenly, his feet
hitting the ground as if his anger was fierce enough
to cause an earthquake.
Mama put her hands on her head and started to wail.
I closed my eyes and feigned sleep.
The next I saw Obinna would be inside his casket in
church as the priest delivered some nonsense
eulogy.
He died with his shoes on .
Sometimes I thought of it and wondered if mama
hadn't killed him with that curse she didn't even
know was a curse till it leaped from the sulphuric
void it had been in and fastened its fangs on my
brother's jugular.
My brother was killed in the Boxing day gunfight that
would become a legend in Fear Street because it was
that gunfight that broke the myth of the Chain Gang
invisibility, freed the youths from ten years of
oppression. It was the gunfight that brought in a new
order, the Bayawe Bullets who would rule the street
for thirty-seven years.
The previous Christmas, my brother had followed
some of the Chain Gang Soldiers to a party at a club
some streets away. Sometime later in the party, one
of the top guns in the gang had spotted a girl he was
interested in dancing with another dude. He went
over and whispered something into the boy's ears.
The boy stopped dancing, looked at him funny then
shrugged and resumed dancing. The Chain Gang
dude walked away to join his boys.
Later that night, they jumped the guy as he saw the
girl off. They beat him so bad he had severe
concussions and required thirty-six stitches in the
face. And typical of the normal Chain Gang
behaviour, the girl was subject to an ordeal that left
her traumatised for a long, long while.
Unfortunately for them, the girl's ex boyfriend was
Mamba Jack himself.
The next day, the hitmen in motorbikes came again.
But word had gone round and the Chain Gang were
waiting for them. Only this time, it wasn't just six
men with pistols. It was a whooping twenty nine gun-
toting goons with blood in their eyes and murder on
their minds.
I heard the sounds of the fighting from the comfort of
our tiny room. My ears hurt as gunshots thundered
over and over. I think one or two had a shotgun. The
way a shotgun sounds could make God sue for an
infringement of thundering rights.
Someone later told me that the Chain Gang had been
overwhelmed by the superior firepower of their
opponents and my brother was shot at the back of
the neck as he ran from his pursuers. I felt numb
when I heard the news and mama cried softly.
We moved from Fear Street six months later, I guess
the memory was just too much for us to handle. I
couldn't look at a chain and not think of him. I
noticed mama doesn't even wear jewelleries
anymore.
Sometimes, as I put on my shoes, preparing to go
out, I would see Obinna's face with that mean mug
expression. I would think of mama saying of the
Chain Gang, They die with their shoes on. And I
would ponder, I would wonder if things might have
turned out differently if she hadn't said these words.

rkarang: Thanks so much for taking your time to reply my qs sir.

As regards resource, it's better than wasting 365 days.

Sir, what can you say abt UNIBEN DE admission? Pls, not the f**cking assumption that we had abt FUNAAB, sir. I'm considering UNN or UNIBEN for my 4th DE? Others can also share their view abt the above qs.
Sorry for the late reply, hv not been online due to some uncontrollable circumstances.. Yes, as per the matter on ground... I wouldn't have said it better, UNN and Uniben is Just the best simply because they conduct Test for student and you are selected based on what ur scorer is. So it will now be left for u to jack all the jackables and make sure u pass.. Its not like unaab dat randomly select as we have heard. So pls go for Uniben And Unn.... There is a girl right on one of the Thread I frequent that also did DE for Uniben and Unn, she wasn't selected in Uniben but Unn gave her admission for MBBS.. Sanguine,Temicare and Omodare knows her very well grin grin... She's the MaMa of Dat our Thread!

Sanguine: Uzor, thank you so much for this... I just did not know what to say when I read Temi's last post...
Life is a personal race and that's just how it should be run...as a personal race.
To think some few months ago everyone on here was exhilirated and expectant that we'd meet in school under 'The Nairaland Family' banner... and now that's most likely not gonna happen anymore... it's so heartbreaking.
Temi, I must tell you, you have an amazing store of Faith there. You do not have to give up, you do not need to give up on a Bsc degree if eventually this did not work out...try try try and try again. No you just cannot lose hope. You've got this breath of life in you so you just cannot afford to lose hope otherwise you're just as good as dead!
To everyone... There's always a silver lining in the sky, all you gotta do is look real close...
There's always light at the tail end of every tunnel, all you gotta do is keep walking.
Whhat more can I say. God is God, God has always been God, God will forever be God... And he knows just what's best for every one person because he's got the blueprints of every onee person's life.

It's not over yet until it iss over!
And since we still breathe this air, it is definitely not over.
ONE HOUSE. ONE LOVE!
Babe, ya loved!!!

rkarang: Dear brother, how did you submit your 2DE forms? Did you submit to the same branch? Is it advisable to submit to the same branch? If yes, can I submit the two the same day or week? How abt 4DE forms? What can you say abt that bro?

Whoever has similar experience should pls share his/her view.
I submitted 3 forms at the same time at Ikoyi Jamb office here in lag.. Jst make a photocopy of all the forms then tell them if they ask u are submitting unbehalf of 3 persons who aren't able to make it there. Or better stil if u wanna submit 2 forms submit the same day but at different time if the Office is quite far frm where u are coming from.. There will be lots of students there so once u come in submit and leave then come in again.. Though they kind of frown at people submitting more than once, they will tell u submit ur first choice here then take ur second choice to the sch urself.. But if u bought 2 different forms then jst show them that u are submitting just the first choice of different sch with different forms.. Basically what I feel they are against is submitting ur first n 2nd choice not in the case of 2 separate DE cards forms. they will wanna treat it like different individual..

Anyway, jst apply wisdom sha and know its possible..if u have more resources buy 4 DE forms about 16k so u will spread ur risk broadly so u can be like sanguine and some of this guys here that u will always find on different thread on NL. And u pray DE exam don't fall on the same day grin

Temicare: embarassed
I still believe strongly on dis admission...Dou I don't hv a way of justifying it... My lord has promise me dis admission.... pls don't say dis again...if u don't hv anyfin good 2 offer d house.... pls shut up!...U r killing me...
But hallelujah 2 Jesus,my hope is still strong...if I don't get admitted dis year...dats it!...God wants it dat way....which means am done wit University admission...am gonna leave d space n d opportunity for my last 2 immediate brother 2 try d nxt DE..am not d only son of my mother who want 2 go d university...
Hav never felt ur comments as this b4, hmmmmm,I can undertstand. I can understand projections has been made, I can undertstand calculation has been made, I can understand plans have been set, the timeline has been drawn. I can undertstand the number of years has been added to the number of years 2 be spent in sch plus d service year so it meets the Employable year. I could go on and on.
But u know what, even if everything looks like its shambling on U, the last thing u wanna do is give up so soon. Pls don't drop it Yet, Hang on brother. It gonna be well. Pls don't give up on a BSC, if this year doesn't work Pls push on the Next year. And for ur other siblings, let them pursue theirs too while u are pursuing urs too.. Life if a personal race irrespective of either I have brother or not.its the survival of the fittest man and u aren't ready to give up. Even if ur parents don't wanna sponsor u that doesn't stop the dream man, there are a whole lots of people sponsoring themselves through sch u can ask V.C Unn. We all have our personal stories, there are quite a number of Us here I have had conversation with who had seized to ask their parents frm monetary favours in a long time. My very close friend finished from 100- 400l in architecture frm covenant University without asking home for money except the 350k the parents paid in the 1st year.
So brother, let ur sibling try their luck while u too do ur own, As for the parental backing or sponsorship thing, u try and gain the admission first and see if God who gave u d admission wouldn't see u through it.

Don't Lose Hope brother...
