It takes gumption to sprint towards a 17+ foot-tall structure knowing the only instrument propelling you over it is a thin fiberglass pole.

We never realized just how fragile those poles can be until one of them snapped into three pieces on an Olympic athlete this week... in the middle of his vault attempt.

Lazaro Borges, a 26-year-old Cuban pole vaulter, was attempting to clear 17.5 feet on Wednesday in the Olympic pole vault qualifiers. But his pole buckled and snapped into multiple pieces, sending fiberglass fragments sailing through the air, and the athlete plummeting to the mat.

According to USA Today, Borges' subsequent fall to the ground was accompanied by "lots of gasps" as onlookers at Olympic Stadium verbalized their shock.

After the incident, a somewhat dazed-looking Borges walked off the mat, dusted himself off, picked up the pieces of his pole and walked back to the starting line. Borges found a new pole and succeeded in clearing the 17.5-foot height on his final attempt. The athlete ultimately failed to qualify for the pole vault final, held Friday.

The 2012 Olympics have been making headlines all week long and now there is a new one that has everyone talking about it! On Tuesday, the Ukrainian synchronized swimmers finished their routine in a different way that had fans wondering what was going on with them.

Daria Iushko and Kysenia Sydorenko ended their routine with a big kiss! They simply laid one on each other and it doesn't look like there was any tongue from them at all. They were just happy to have done well and kissed each other flat on the lips.

Many fans wondered if this was part of the routine but it wasn't at all. They were just enjoying each other and there is no word yet of why they did it at all. It is normal for them to kiss on the cheek, but not the lips. What do you think?

As is so often the case when the Chinese star Liu Xiang hurdles, it was difficult to avoid the bigger picture on Tuesday. It was hard not to imagine the millions upon millions watching in his homeland, mouths agape and hands to their faces, stunned as Liu lay on the London track in pain, another Olympics over for him in a flash.
For nearly a decade now, since he burst onto the international scene in 2004, Liu has been as much a symbol as he has been a competitor, representing China’s, even Asia’s, global sports aspirations.

It has long been a great deal for one athlete to bear, and with the benefit of hindsight it seems logical that his only Olympic medal came in his first Games, in 2004, when the symbolism had yet to snowball into something closer to that “monster” pressure that the Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer once complained about.

In 2004, Liu was healthy, running free and still an outsider. The favorite in the 110-meter hurdles then was Allen Johnson, the veteran American. But Johnson stumbled out of those Olympics in the quarterfinals, and in the final, Liu — with his formidable technique and youthful exuberance — beat everyone to the finish line to equal the world record of 12.91 seconds.

He was the first Chinese man to win an Olympic gold medal in track. His victory served as proof that a nation that had been stockpiling victories in diving and table tennis could compete in a mainstream, truly global event that had traditionally been dominated by sprinters from North America and Europe.

There would be other triumphs to come for Liu: another world record in 2006, and world indoor and outdoor titles. But at 29, he is now most indelibly linked with two races that were hardly races at all.

At the 2008 Games in Beijing, Liu walked onto the track to warm up for his first round and was soon grabbing at his right heel, wincing in pain and removing the lane numbers affixed to each of his thighs.

As the heat began without him, he sat slumped against a wall in the Bird’s Nest Stadium that was supposed to have been the grand, avant-garde setting for a resounding Chinese triumph, the country’s equivalent of Australia’s Cathy Freeman victory in Sydney in 2000.

Flash forward to Tuesday, where Liu made it out of the starting blocks in the first round but then fell at the first hurdle as his left heel on his lead leg struck the barrier in lane 4 and he went tumbling to the track. For an athlete as finely tuned and experienced as Liu, it was too blatant a mistake to have been purely a miscalculation.

Feng Shuyong, head of the Chinese track and field team, later explained that the initial diagnosis was that Liu had ruptured his right Achilles tendon again, perhaps on the takeoff for that first hurdle. But Feng indicated that further medical confirmation was required.

“The injury is the same one he had in Beijing,” Feng said at a news conference. “In the last several years he has had good medical care, but it is still there. An Achilles injury is almost impossible to recover from fully.”

It has been another triumphant Olympics for the Chinese. Late Tuesday, they still led the gold-medal and overall medal counts. Stars like the men’s badminton player Lin Dan and the swimmer Sun Yang have fulfilled hopes and expectations by winning in London.

Four topless activists from a women's rights group were arrested today after they carried out a protest in central London.
Police were called to City Hall to deal with the protesters, who had accused the Olympics' governing body of having supported 'bloody' Islamist regimes.
Pictures showed officers holding women on the ground and covering their chests.

One woman screamed as officers held her.
The demonstration near Tower Bridge, described as an 'Islamic marathon' by the protesters, was organised by the Ukrainian feminist group Femen.
Protesters said the demonstration was against 'bloody' Islamist regimes which they said had been supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Some of the women had slogans marked on their bare chests. At least one carried the message: 'No Sharia'.
Femen, a group based in Kiev, was founded in 2008.
The organisation has become internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills.

Its stated goals include developing 'leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine' and to 'build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women'.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the protest group said a number of its French members had been arrested.
It called on the IOC to 'condemn violence towards women from Islamist states'.
It said: 'Femen requires the states that apply the laws of sharia be shut out of the Olympic games, because of the inhumanity of these laws, which are in total contradiction with Olympic principles that are peace and philanthropy.
'Femen accuses these states of simulating democratic changes regarding the position of women.
'With the support of the IOC, these Islamist governments use the participation of women in the Olympic games to hide thousands of victims and dead.
'If the IOC keeps flirting with radical Islam, new Olympic disciplines, such as stoning or speed raping will be added to the competition.'

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'At approximately 11.30am today police attended the site of a demonstration outside City Hall.
'Four topless female protesters were arrested under section five of the Public Order Act for disorderly behaviour.
'They are currently in custody.'
The protest was staged less than three months after Femen activists snatched football's European Championship trophy on two occasions.
They grabbed the cup in May while it was on display in a central square in Dnipropetrovsk, south-east Ukraine.
One activist took off her top to reveal an offensive slogan before picking up the trophy.
As security guards moved in on her, another activist, standing next to the cup, stripped off to the waist to display the same slogan.
Activists staged a similar protest in the Ukrainian capital Kiev earlier that month.
In February the protest group clashed with Italian police during Milan Fashion Week after a demonstration against the use of anorexic models.
The topless protesters wore jeans and had handwritten slogans such as 'Fashion = Fascism' and 'Anorexia' scrawled across their chests.
A similar protest was held in January in the Swiss resort of Davos in January, where the World Economic Forum held its annual meeting.

Serena Williams was so overjoyed after defeating Maria Sharapova in the Olympic singles and winning the gold that she broke into a Crip Walk dance.

"It was just me. I love to dance," Williams told reporters who inquired about her Crip Walk . "I didn't know what else to do. I was so happy, and next thing I know I started dancing and moving. I didn't plan it. It just happened."

When one naive reporter asked what the name of the dance could be -- "The Wimbledon?" or "The Serena?" -- Williams said, "Actually, there is a name. But I don't know if I -- it's inappropriate. It's just a dance we do in California."

"For the uninitiated, the Crip Walk is a funky little hip-hop dance move made famous by Crip gang members in Compton in the 1970s," wrote Fox Sports' Reid Forgrave, who went on to criticize Williams:

Another Fox Sports reporter, Jason Whitlock, downplayed the so-called controversy , saying: "What Serena did was akin to cracking a tasteless, X-rated joke inside a church... Serena deserved to be called out. What she did was immature and classless. She made a mistake, something we all do."

Nigerian super star performer Seun Kuti and youngest son of Afrobeat legend late Fela Kuti was scheduled to perform on the last night of music showcase during the New world Nigeria event holding in Stratford London. Due to late scheduling and no fault of his own, the renowned saxophonist who was the headline act got on stage an hour later than expected but was determined to fulfil his hour long set to his fans. From the minute his performances started and the adoring fans couldn’t help but get on their feet dancing to the songs the security guards at the Theatre were quick to move in asking the fans to sit down and remain sited. Noticing what was going on, Seun Kuti spoke up reiterating his reasons for being on stage was to please his fans asking the audience to get up on their feet and rock on. This led to a rapturous applause from the entire auditorium leaping to their feet with joy. Once this happened, the security guards moved in and Seun Kuti stopped the music saying “I am here to make my fans dance, if they are not going to be allowed to do this then I will not perform”. Instantly one security guard jumped on stage to ask that Seun Kuti stopped performing and the show was cut short.
