PoliticsRe: This Is How Ambode Wants To Solve Traffic Problem In Lagos by portage(m):
MKO4ever:
In summary:
--Improve traffic radio 96.1fm
--Increase the number of LASTMA on the road
--Increase the number of CCTV cameras and quality of information on www.tsaboin.com
--Fix the pot holes
--Take care of the danfo drivers
--More fly-overs: both pedestrian and for vehicles
Nice suggestions. In my opinion,

--Improving traffic radio 96.1fm will do nothing. Traffic Announcement should be left to any public or private radio operating in lagos.

--Increasing the number of LASTMA on the road. This move should be left alone the way it is presently. Increasing their number will only add more trouble in managing them and more overhead cost of running the agency. Can the LASTMA agency even sustain itself or they still depend on some relief from the State?

--Increase the number of CCTV....Lagos or Nigeria for that matter is not ready for this. We need to get a central and complete database of Nigerians first. Therefore, this may end up being a waste of money and already scarce resources.

-- Fix the potholes.
Yes, this should be left to the hands of LCDA'S and local Government. These guys should be held accountable for maintaining roads within their jurisdiction. So simple. We are talking accountability here.

--Take care of Danfo drivers! This is a social problem that has been around with us for quite a long time and it will take quite a while to erase or control the agbero mentality among these danfo boys. In my opinion, i think alternative to road transport (water ways, ferry) will make the agberos sit tight and approach driving on lagos road with a positive sense. It will not happen in one day, but surely their thinking will be re-wired once they realize that there is alternative to get around Lagos. There will be competition among danfo drivers and the waterway/ferry. Most and if not all these danfo drivers can not read or write. You just wonder how the navigation thing will work. Open up new or alternative routes. So simple and yet difficult to reason out by the government or ministry of transport.

--More fly-overs: both pedestrian and for vehicles - Lagos does not need a soothsayer to realize that this is needed as a matter of urgency of NOW or time immemorial. Lagos state government need to open up so many NEW industrialized places with carefully planned road network. Sometimes you just wonder what the town planning guys are doing?

Lastly, Commissioner of Transport. Whats up with you? You need freshh thinking and ideas and if you are not capable, then resign.

Before prosecuting her, abeg look in to her own original family gan gan. I think her family is well above average even before she married Muhamadu Buhari. She appears to be by no means a poor Northern woman o.
I think i read somewhere she's from a certain Ribadu family in Adamawa? That name alone can guarantee you quite a lot of good stuff in Switzerland and other parts of the world. I honestly don't have a clue as to what her parents did for a living o. But i think she was raised with a silver spoon.
Therefore, she can well afford the said wristwatch even if she puts it on her Credit card.

Just today, January 22nd 2015, President Obama just affirmed tonight ( through Google live interview) that the Jonathan PDP led Government is NOT doing enough to combat Boko Haram menace!

Therefore, The United States is not happy with current Government in Nigeria. The US will like to see a CHANGE!.......a Government they can work with........this, in my opinion will help Nigeria and the United States at the same time.

We certainly need a CHANGE……………an effective Government that will be serious enough to curb this Boko People! and improve the discipline level that we so much needed in Nigeria.

Constructive criticism is all about fine tuning a "made" product. Nothing is 100% perfect, however things can be better.
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel (or share other peoples worldview) read only one page" St Augustine.

Travel, move around, make friends even from other tribes in Nigeria and broaden your world knowledge. Learn to see the world from different perspective. Nigeria is not the only country in Africa. See the bold from the quote above. I only made suggestions to include songs or entertainers from other places. If you cease watching the series-so be it, some other people will continue to watch……after all the show is free!

TV/MoviesRe: "SHUGA" Season 3 by portage(m): 8:57pm On Dec 08, 2013
I suggest you watch the first two series (Nairobi Kenya, available on you Tube) and make your comparison too.
I just feel the Nigerian version is not saying much about our unique society and problems......just saying wink Whoever wrote the Nigerian Shuga script is piecing from past drama series and home videos (Owuro l'ojo in early 90's for example).

Again, somebody said Nigerian version will present finer/prettier girls grin na wa o....i never see any fine girl from the first episode so far and the girls from Kenya will beat any Naija babe when it comes to acting without without limitation wink.

By the way, pretty faces should not be the basis to judge a show. It is the underlying message being passed across that matters.
TV/MoviesRe: "SHUGA" Season 3 by portage(m): 6:20pm On Dec 08, 2013
Shuga is very rich in terms of Continental Africa coming to terms with social issues we face every day. Nairobi Kenya-did a very great job from casting, location, recording, editing, professionalism of the camera crew, and most importantly the quality story line. I came across the series by chance on YouTube and I binge watched every single clip available at a go!

Now, learning that series 3 is out and focused on Nigeria is a great thing! However, I have my few cents of contribution after watching the very first episode of the third series:

At the moment, we (viewers) cannot precisely say much about the ending-however; what I saw personally is not up to par with what Kenya offered in the first two series! Yes, it is a good thing introducing Femi the Nigerian guy, however, the story is beginning to center around him! Why is that if I may ask? Also, they should try to use other popular music from around Africa as sound track and not just Nigerian music now! After all, Shuga Kenya used Nigerian music!

In my opinion, I think the Shuga franchise aimed to center around social issues confronting societies in different parts of Africa. For example, it is safe to say HIV/AIDS is a confirmed part of East and South Africa and it has become an issue that needs drastic and urgent attention by the youths in that part of the world. Thus, a story was told to create more awareness.

Therefore, it is important for those guys that wrote the script for the Nigerian version to write something peculiar to the Nigerian society! Something more in the line of corruption and how it has affected every segment of the Nigerian society. It is a known fact that corruption is evident from the presidency in Abuja to the orange seller in the market, vendor on the streets, your next door neighbor, Government ministries, Banking institution etc etc. They can also find a way to bring in HIV/AIDS spread in Nigeria as a direct link to corruption and poverty!

Just my two cents-best wishes to Shuga Nigeria crew wink.

Music/RadioMemeories and Music Appreciation Time by portage(op):
I love music. Good music and of course career musicians. I sincerely do not mind what genre!!

I love the likes of Bob Nesta Marley, Fela Kuti, Bruce Springsteen, U2, UB40 (UK Midlands-Birmingham and the whole of Yorkshire all the way), Lionel Richie, Micheal Jackson the KING, Kenny G, Earl Klugh, Lucky Dube, Brenda Fassie, Tracy Chapman, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lady Gaga, Evi Edna Ogholi, King Sunny Ade, KWAM1, Orlando Owoh the great! Lagbaja (omo Baba muko muko with his mastery and love for Saxophone)!! Gbenga Falope Junior (sincere apologies if you are not from Osun Oshogbo axis) grin

In my own (personal) opinion and i stand to be corrected, i think the musicians i have mentioned have been able to differentiate themselves from the everyday people that just sing.

It is not about having women display what we don't mind to see grin grin I just think there is a HUGE difference from a musician and entertainers that we so have and celebrate in Nigeria. A good musician should at least know and master one of the instruments (to present the message) that makes a GOOD SONG/music.

As far as i am concerned, i think King Sunny Ade, Orlando Owoh, Bruce the "BOSS" Springsteen, can hold their head up all HIGH when it comes to stringing Guitars to make good music and entertain at the same time!!

Fela Kuti, of course can entertain with Keyboards, Saxophone and Afro dance grin

What do you guys think?

Please, feel free to add to the list and share your reasons for loving a particular musician tongue

Remember, musicians are different from stage entertainers tongue tongue

stewie100: if i were to purchase the resort ranch as privatization i would turn it into disneyland, its a shame black people cannot make use of their thinking faculties, celebrating mediocrity and too busy yapping without listening, here is what can be done
1. relocate the villagers to city 2. bring in giraffes and zebra 3. Ferris wheel 4. fake snow on the mountain to beautify the scenery 5. build a light railway to transport people there /good road connection.
6. those cottages should be modernized glass cottages.7 six big statues of dinosaurs 8. build a fictitious ghost adventure village with illustrating life size human statues 9. call the ranch an english name like Green Hills Mountain Resort and market it worldwide
@Stewie100!
You have some really nice concepts up there. However, i disagree with few things unless you are looking at things like urban renewal. If that is the case you will be taking away the Obudu feel smiley
By taking/relocating away the villagers....don't you think you are systematically ruining the authenticity of the destination? Mind you, most tourists visit places just to feel the authenticity!
Fake snow in Africa huh C'mon, just leave Africa the way it is. There is beauty in the jungle itself for the adventurers, risk takers, drifters etc etc. Even if you go to Disney in Orlando, or Cleveland Zoo or any zoo at all in the US, they try to present "Africa" and trust me, these guys are good.
Light railway! Yea, way to go.....somehow this Obudu will increase traffic if only they have a reliable transportation network. it does not have to be cumbersome to enjoy yourself nah (except if that is what Obudu is selling-and i seriously doubt, because we all know Nigeria)

The cottages should be left the way they are-The only thing i STRONGLY disagree with is the pricing! HABA, Kilode huh $500-$1000 for a nighthuh? These people should be careful nowww angry Which resort/destination in the world does that??

Lastly, the name can remain Obudu.....(It is part of the authenticity my brother or na Sister) Perhaps, if you have a chance, you can read "Staged Authenticity: Arrangements of Social Space in Tourist settings"- Dean MacCannell (1973).

If you ask me, destinations rise and fall. However, Obudu is yet to be born let alone rise, before falling. Obudu is still an idea grin You can read more why destinations rise and fall in " Stanley Plog (2001) Why destinations rise and Fall in Popularity".

Why won’t the Indians be involved in the Management? These are partly compassionate professionals/business men!! In their own mind (they are providing services that seem not to be available)!! If you are a medical professional, nothing stops you from being hired in this same facility! You even stand a better chance considering that you are probably a Nigerian!

Services cost Money (regardless of the sector of any buoyant/vibrant economy) …….we still need to come to terms with that simple fact in Nigeria!! If we don’t, then na wahala we dey for every sector that drives the economy!!! Only today, another air crash angry angry. These are all avoidable circumstances!!! How can an airplane just drop off after take off angry angry YES, it happens, but it rarely does if people do their job!! Right from Kema Chikwe, Babalola Borishade, Fani kayode (the loudmouthed) even Agagu himself.....no positive thing ever happened in this same (Aviation) sector!

And if we ( Nigerians) fail to recognize and accept the simple fact (that services drive an economy) we may never enjoy the benefits that comes along with enjoying your life to the fullest!

PoliticsRe: Nizamiye Hospital Opens In Abuja(pictures) by portage(m): 1:28am On Oct 04, 2013
Sagamite: It looks like a world standard construction.

I need to know the cost to be able to judge well.

That said, I am sure the fact Tony Elumelu is connected to this construction plays a key part in the construction standard.
@Sagamite:
YES, this is a world class/modern construction no doubt. However I have few questions
1. How many of these will be built in the country?
2. Will world class/modern services be provided in these “world class” hospital?
To be honest, we (Nigeria) can even build the US White House without feeling the cost! What we need to focus on is the system, structure (as in who works there, electricity to carry out medical issues).
Electricity (power) is our major problem! If we have a constant power supply such that medical/surgical operations can be carried out successfully, many people will go to these so called “new Hospitals”. Even Nigerian medical professionals residing outside Nigeria will gladly come back to offer a hand!
It is one thing to have a decent looking building and it is another thing entirely to make the same building function the way it should.

We should stop this attitude of saying because one Elumelu is involved…………so we have a decent looking building!
For all I care, federal Government should provide this same building (and of course the money to run it) in every nook and cranny of Nigeria. Every local government should have at the very leas, three (3) of these same hospital. Yes, we can afford it. These Lawmakers just sit in Abuja and eat away all the money. So selfish environment if anybody ask me.
The only thing these lawmakers seem to be concerned with is how to generate contracts and award it to their own personal companies and nothing gets done at the end of the day.
These same lawmakers can still make a difference while having a decent portion of the national cake to eat! SERVICE is all about making positive difference wherever you find yourself.
It is just GREED (black man/human greed), ethnic issues, that will never make such vision come to reality. And this is what is killing Nigeria.

Go to any western country, they still have greed (it is human nature), but they have conscience as well and these lawmakers in western countries still ensure that the people they are cheating (or Lording over) still have a decent pie to eat from!!!!!!

PoliticsRe: What Happened To Tinapa? by portage(m): 11:04pm On Sep 04, 2013
Tinapa was never a mistake as some people insinuated earlier on. Saw this thread earlier on this morning but just couldn’t participate simply because I had to go to work. We already talked about tourism in Nigeria some two years ago (June/July 2011) if I am not mistaken. If you check my comments am sure you will find my contributions to comments regarding Nigerian Tourism.

Here is my take again: Donald Duke did very well by building this place. The problem now is for businesses to invest in areas such as transportation! For example, what stops our so called BIG Banks from investing in things such as railway service? They can make it private and build few rail stations (in strategic places o) about six and run a scheduled trip from wherever these stations are located! In my opinion, the only thing our banks know how to do is employ all these desperate young girls and push them out to go and solicit for deposits all in the name of meeting targets!!! By the way, these young children are exposed to all manner of unwanted harassment.

Also, the bulk of Tinapa failure is wholeheartedly on whoever is managing the place! The key problem with Tinapa is it is too expensive and cumbersome for people to get to the destination! Haba, kilode, is not enjoyment you are looking for?? Why do you have to subject yourself to so much stress before you can enjoy your hard earned money!!
Also, Hotel pricing in these entire destination is mind blowing! Kilode, even the $1500 room is not even worth it if you ask me. Even, the Hyatt, Regency or even Durys Inn, Marriotts can never ask you to pay such amount for a night stay. Yes, and this is regardless of maybe all the hotels I mentioned are located in the heart of NY, Niagara fall, downtown los Angeles, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Orlando Florida, or West Central London……..Mayfair area to be precise (where you expect to pay mega o).

So, tell me as a Nigerian (with some money to spend o) will prefer to go to Tinapa?? They will rather travel to destination outside Nigeria of course!! When all you got to do is jump on the next available flight and sleep in a $180 room per night and enjoy all the extras that come with it!!

To all the managers of the Tinapa-Anwers on how to manage the Tinapa is already in Management textbooks. Do yourselves a favor and save your job by picking one of these books up, read and apply the strategies.

All the best o!

Wow again and again! See classic football in action! These guys are just too good. Brazil will always be a threat when it comes to any free kick near the box 18! Very entertaining. Nigerian team is kind of far from the kind of technicalities these people posses smiley They always pass with a purpose, play free kick with a purpose! Well coordinated if anybody ask me.

Wow, It is only the likes of Kanu (in the Nigerian team)that can pull this goal stunt!
