John Joseph, chairman of the Billiri local government area (LGA) chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gombe state, has asked the Muslim community for forgiveness over the recent violence that broke out in the area. Joseph made the appeal on Wednesday, following a meeting held with Muhammad Yahaya, governor of Gombe. Also present at the meeting were Manassah Jatau, deputy governor of Gombe; Okon Ene, assistant inspector-general of police of zone 12 in Bauchi; Abubakar Abdullahi, chief imam of Tangale, and Margaret Bitrus, chairperson of Biliri LGA. While addressing stakeholders present at the meeting, the CAN chairman also promised to work with other Christian leaders in the area towards peaceful resolution of the crisis. “To the parents who lost their children, we extended our condolences. We the Christian community apologise. We condole with Muslims whose place of worship was attacked. AIG, permit me to gather other Christian leaders to meet imams and his people to apologise,” Joseph said. Abdu Baba Maisharu II, the former Mai Tangale, had died on January 10, prompting the opening of the selection process of a new traditional ruler. The seat is usually filled by persons of different religious leanings, and the kingmakers were said to have forwarded three names to the state government, after the conclusion of the screening process. However, violence had broken out in the area recently, following the delay in the announcement of the new traditional ruler, as decided by the kingmakers. ☰ Gombe crisis: CAN leader apologises to Muslim community Gombe crisis: CAN leader apologises to Muslim community February 25 08:19 2021 by TheCable 0 Comments FacebookTwitterTelegramCopy LinkWhatsAppMore9 John Joseph, chairman of the Billiri local government area (LGA) chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gombe state, has asked the Muslim community for forgiveness over the recent violence that broke out in the area. CRISIS OVER SELECTION OF NEW TRADITIONAL RULER Abdu Baba Maisharu II, the former Mai Tangale, had died on January 10, prompting the opening of the selection process of a new traditional ruler. Advertisement The seat is usually filled by persons of different religious leanings, and the kingmakers were said to have forwarded three names to the state government, after the conclusion of the screening process. However, violence had broken out in the area recently, following the delay in the announcement of the new traditional ruler, as decided by the kingmakers. What began as protests degenerated into crisis, following the delay in the announcement, leading to attacks on properties and killings, and the state government declared a 24-hour curfew on Biliri LGA, which took effect on February 19. The governor had visited the LGA on February 20 to assess the level of damage recorded by the protests which turned violent. Speaking to journalists after the assessment, Yahaya condemned the attacks, which led to the loss of lives and property. “Government is still on the selection process of appointing a new Mai, but some forces took advantage of the development to cause mayhem, just to achieve their personal goal, which as you all witnessed today, resulted in the loss of lives and property,” the governor said. “We condemn the criminal behaviour and actions committed by those unscrupulous elements and we sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and property in this unfortunate incident.” After the stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday, the government announced a relaxation of the curfew, which will now run from 6am till 2pm, beginning on Thursday. A statement issued on Wednesday by Ismaila Misilli, spokesman to the governor, also dismissed the allegation about plans to announce the name of an unpopular candidate, contrary to the decision of the king makers. Misilli was responding to a statement reportedly credited to a “southern/middle belt” forum regarding the crisis. “It is public knowledge that the Tangale Chiefdom is a mixture of the two major religions, and available records indicate that persons of different faith had in the past few decades occupied the exalted stool of Mai Tangle. The records are there for all to access,” the statement reads. “To the best of the knowledge of the Gombe State Government, the three names submitted by the Kingmakers are the choice of the Tangale people, and any one among them can ascend the throne. “Thus, against the baseless allegation by the forum, there is no room for the imposition of “an unpopular candidate as the new Mai Tangle” as the Governor will not go outside the names submitted to him by the Tangale traditional Kingmakers. “The Gombe State Government understands that all the three contenders are members of the same Tangale Royal Family. For emphasis, all the three nominees are equal before the law, irrespective of their number of votes. “The Gombe State Government wishes to call on the citizens of the state, especially the people of Tangale Chiefdom, to continue to be calm and peaceful at this moment. “The state government assures all citizens of the protection of their lives and property without fear or favour.” https://www.thecable.ng/gombe-crisis-can-leader-apologises-to-muslim-community |
Omanze:Its all about the political interest of the current government. If u look through the colonial master and how they handle the traditional system, u will realize it all about the interest of the government not the people. |
Omanze:Not election bro nomination. They got it wrong when they state how many votes each candidate got, what is required is that they should nominate 3 eligible candidate and forward to the governor who will do the final selection amongst the 3 sent. The people have no right to conduct election of a king. The king makers are to just nominate people who are eligible nothing more. |
Nwodosis:They are public schools mind u. |
Omanze:King makers are only to suggest but the final confirmation is with the governor. You know just like the Audu buba with Governor Hashidu that is who Governor Inuwa yahaya will do with this appointment. It's all political |
RESTMOUTH99:Well I guess since its a majority muslim State and there rules go against the majority, then it's fair to say they cant operate in such a state and it's better they move to where there rules marge with the majority. Simple |
jansonn:Well speak that to wike. |
Nemere2020:Nice one muric. Kwarai is an islamic state they should move to rivers or any other christian state. Those schools will be absorbed by the state and renamed immediately. What nonsense and over stepping of boundary by those missionary schools when a state has almost 100% muslims. |
Omanze:Bro not the immediate past, I mean those before him like Illyasu Maiyamba. After his death is when Hashidu appointed buba maisharu |
Deathisfree:Get hard evidence and report to ur friend. |
forgiveness:Bros I did not mean the immediate past. Those before him is what I ment |
eldoradoxx:Great so when the 40% convince some of the 60% for support and they agree that will be ok then. |
eldoradoxx:Well coz that is fair just like minorities clamoring for the right to seek the presidency in nigeria. |
Newton85:Nope, nothing like fulani in that area this is between Tangale people. See link below for more clarity https://dailynigerian.com/mai-tangale-succession-crisis/ |
Divoc:Bro these are same people just difference in faith. Most of these crises are same tribe same people just difference of faith but u guys in the south think it's only hausa fulanis that have muslims. |

Bro he is a muslim bros Illyasu maiyamba Also nothing like hausa fulanis in Tangale area they are all same tribes men. |
AsomughaChuks02:Well but how come kings around the area a mostly muslims |
Nowenuse:Well how comes emir of kaltungo is a muslim and the previous mai Tangale illayus maiyamba was a muslim Gov Hashidu appointed buba maisharu. Also below are the current contestants of Mai Tangale 1. Dr musa Idris Maiyamba ( christian) 2. Alhaji Danladi Maiyamba (Muslim) 3. Alhaji Ahmad Magaji (Muslim) The first to are from same family but 1 a christian and the other a muslim Stop saying what u don't know |
Esseite:The clips of destruction of Muslim residence, market , place of worship and 3 death doesn't look like a protest. |
myobjective:But the previous 2 kings where all muslims and 2 out of 3 contestants who are from the same family are muslims only 1 is christian. |
Three persons were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State as the crisis over the appointment of a new Mai Tangale deepens.https://dailytrust.com/mai-tangale-stool-3-killed-property-destroyed-as-crisis-deepens |
Crises Has erupted in Billiri LGA of Gombe over the Selection Of New Mai Tangale following the death of the 15 Mai Tangale Dr Abdu Buba-Maisheru (II) ( Christian) who died Jan 11 2021. He Succeeded The Previous Mai Tangale are Mai Yamba 13th Mai Tangale( Muslim) Mai Illyasu 14th Mai Tangale (Muslim) The Crises is between Christian and Muslims of Same Tribe Called Tangale in Gombe state over the the selection of the 16th Mai Tangale by the Government of Gombe State. The issue here is 3 candidates where presented to the governor for his final selection by the king makers out of 18 contestants. 3 of them are from thesame family of a previous king who happened to be a Muslim. One of the 3 contestants from the same family is a christian while the others are Muslim. The contestants names are 1. Dr musa Idris Maiyamba ( christian) 2. Alhaji Danladi Maiyamba (Muslim) 3. Alhaji Ahmad Magaji (Muslim) The christians of the Tangale extraction began protesting that they suspect since the Governor is a muslim he will definitely back the muslim candidate against thier wish for a Christian to succeed the Dead Mai Tangale who happen to be a Christian too. The christian protesters block Gombe Yola High way and attack motorist. They attack Billiri Market where muslims amogst them own most of the businesses and burn to the ground. They attack about 5 mosque and houses of muslims kinsmen including Ambassador Said u Muhammed. The Muslims kinsmen are asking a question why would thier Christian kinsmen attack them and thier properties, place of worship over a selection process that has not been concluded. Why they the Muslims did not attack the Christians when the Mai Tangale was given to a Christian by Governor Hasidic government. The Crime against Muslims by thier Christian kinsmen is too numerous to mention from Jukun to Tangale ETC. The surprising thing here is they are all same tribe and intermarried each other. These questions are disturbing and needed urgent response from the christian kinsmen of these tribes. Pic1 Burning and looting of Muslim Shops at billiri market. Pic 2. Galadima Mosque Burning Pics 3. Attacking muslim Motorist passing on Yola Gombe Road. Pics 4. Ann Saidu Muhammed House
