The average Nigerian retail investor is the guy that takes his disposable income to invest in the stock market. This obviously does not include the amount held by the pension funds on their behalf. Can you cash out your holdings in the pension funds?

Unfortunately, the bulk of retail investors that joined the market last year are not long term investors. Just people looking for where to park their money and make gains until Tbill rates pick up.

Those who joined last year are not up to 20% of the market participants.

Very few Nigerian buy Treasury Bills, they are less than 500,000.

About 450,000 Nigerians have Investments in mutual funds ( money market fund, fixed income fund, equity fund, REIT, balanced fund, ethical fund, Sukuk fund, Eurobond Fund) etc

You are talking about investing in mutual funds which many Nigerians are not very conversant with. Nigerians are investing directly in Tbills through banks.

Make I put mouth for this matter. Not ready for bad blood today, abeg. Most Nigerians don't even know about TB as most banks don't market it . They will always tell you about fixed deposit. It was the banks that whr cashing out on TB as away for easy money mostly when it was above 10%.I don't have any data to back it up.Some banks even made it difficult to discourage customer by sending you back and forth

He may be right o. Considering the spread of piggyvest and co that offer higher interest in payments. But I'm shocked. Less than N1m Nigerians.

At first, they tried to discourage people that do not know about Tbills but thanks to social media, especially chat groups on NL and WhatsApp, people became more informed and the banks had no option but to start accepting it.

Many Nigerian retail investors had most of their portfolio invested directly in T bills over the past couple of years that rates were high.

True, the number of retail investors is increasing. It is even shown in the analysis posted. But how many Nigerians know? Using NL as an example, how many dey come investment threads? When BB Naija and Buhari never finish

Actually, a lot o. They may not be commenting but they were reading. A lot of people I know were getting their info here but they were not members of NL. I believe traffic on this thread was really high in those years.

Many started walking up to the banks with confidence and demanding for T bills. Even giving the bank guys information that the bankers never even knew.

Eg Zenith bank.

How many Nigerians have N100,000 to N1 million which is the minimum amount required by most banks for Treasury Bill Investments?

You need just N5000 to buy mutual funds, yet just 450,000 Nigerians have mutual fund Investments.

I stand to be corrected less than 500,000 Nigerians buy Treasury Bills

It’s all about education. The average guy that has 5 or 10k doesn’t know about mutual funds and frankly, couldn’t be bothered.

But anyone that has 100k wants to keep that money in fixed deposit. Unfortunately, the fixed deposit rates were pitiful. That person is more likely to go to his or her bank to ask for their money to be kept in treasury bills if they have heard about it (as opposed to mutual funds). You have to be quite sophisticated or financially sound to know about and/or use mutual funds.

I don’t want to believe that in a country with a population of over 200 million, that there are less than 500k that have 100k to invest in fixed deposit or Tbills through banks. But I could be wrong sha.

But in any case, I think with the bolded you have corroborated my point that average Nigerian retail investors couldn’t have made enough gains to be buying lots of cars last year grin

He comments sometimes on stock trade.Person wan claim investment professional, watin oga Emma (human encyclopedia),Ogg, waaann$$$ ,wanajo and others. She thinks people who are here are hungry and looking for thr first tens of million.I have been in stock purchase far back ,2001.I had a vendor who always bring stock watch early 2000 before 2008 crash. Then all I wanted was I place to put cash other than bank.Participated in many ipo and private placement. One small girl will come here and be acting James bond because it is TB thread Make she go try am for stock thread as she claims professional.I see the rubbish she agreed that most people here are people of questionable or criminal character.I kept quiet because it is not so in stock thread .Is not really her fault because what is TB all about beside you go in at a particular interest rate, collect interest up front, reinvest if you want and go to sleep

Just like I advised a young man whose bro is in the fast lane in SA when the bro sent him 30M to keep because he was coming home in a year plus for building purpose. And he wanted to make something out of it .I took him to FBN and he got 15% for 364 days. The young man has not stopped thanking me because the amount he got and the upfront thing. He channelled iit nto his new biz which the bro gave him #5m to start too.He keep thanking because he has never hard of it and how easy it went through being a graduate. You see why she can support rubbish about the thread

I do not really follow the stock market thread here because of the way it is structured. In SMN, every stock had its own thread which made it easier to follow the discussions unlike what obtains in the stock market thread here where all stocks are discussed in one thread. Do not really know why Seun Osewa discarded SMN when he bought it.

I may be wrong, I want to believe N100,000 to a Nigerian in Nigeria, is about $1000 to an American in the US.

How many Americans have $1000 in their accounts.

How many Nigerians have 100k in their accounts, among those with 100k in their accounts what percentage will consider paper Investments like Treasury Bills and fixed income.

Those of us who buy Treasury Bills are in the minute minority.

Treasury Bills is a secret, it is not marketed unlike mutual funds that are agressively marketed on the social media and the old school media. You need minimum of N5000 for most money market funds, minimum of N50,000 for must fixed income funds and minimum of $1000 for most Eurobond Funds, yet we have just 450,000 Nigerians who have Mutual Fund Investments.

About 80% of Treasury Bills investors on Nairaland also have money market funds. In fact that is where most of them diversify their Treasury Bill interests for compounding

Oga, first this is as good as a dead thread (Tbills are dead for now) and secondly this is a public forum owned by NL and not the clique of individuals that wrongfully think that they own this thread. And as long as I am not breaking any rules, I do not think anyone has the right to question my participation here except the mods who will ban me if I am breaking rules.

I dare anyone to show me where I came at them to insult him or her without them provoking me with unnecessary insults. I dare anyone.

Have you seen the kind of insults I receive from certain individuals here for no good reason?

What I am beginning to understand here is that people have interests and once you go against their interests, they find ways to attack you using their alternate monikers and help from clueless people that have one thing or the other against you.

Guess what, I dey kanpe o and I am going nowhere so if you don’t like my presence here, feel free to ignore or leave and go and form your own forum. It’s allowed.
