Villagers in Younanen, Vanuatu believe the late Duke of Edinburgh was the son of a local mountain deity who married a powerful woman and have prayed to him since the 1960s

The late Prince Philip has been worshipped as a god by a tribe on a Pacific island for more than 50 years.

Villagers in Younanen, a remote settlement in Vanuatu, believe the Duke of Edinburgh was the son of a mountain god.

Locals reportedly pray to him daily to ask for his blessings on food crops as well as carry around pictures of the Duke, who died on Friday aged 99.

The villagers began worshipping Philip in the 1960s after seeing pictures of him and his wife the Queen.

They linked the couple to a Vanuatu legend of a pale-skinned son of the mountain god, who travelled across the seas to find a rich and powerful woman to marry.

The village proudly displays several photos of Philip, including one taken in 1980 that shows him holding a club the locals had made specially for him and sent to London.

Younanen was treated to a visit from their god in 1974, when Philip and the Queen travelled to Vanuatu on a state visit back when it was partially owned by the UK and known as the New Hebrides.

"Prince Philip is important to us because our ancestors told us that part of our custom is in England," village chief Jack Malia told Reuters in 2017, when Philip announced his retirement from public duties.

The end of the Duke's royal engagements was met with dismay in Younanen, where villagers had been hoping for a second visit from the man they believed had divine powers.

"If he comes one day the people will not be poor, there will be no sickness, no debt and the garden will be growing very well," Mr Malia explained.

"Prince Philip has said one day he will come and visit us. We still believe that he will come but if he doesn't come, the pictures that I am holding... it means nothing."

The village is not marked on maps and is located some distance from other settlements, so it's unlikely its people have received the sad news of Philip's death yet.

Mr Malia said the Duke had given them wise advise during his 1974 visit, telling them to never accept money from foreigners — only food.

They may have never gotten the much-anticipated second visit from their god, but they did meet his son Prince Charles in 2018 who visited the island during his Commonwealth Games tour.

Vanuatu is an archipelago above New Caledonia consisting of 83 small islands. It has a population of approximately 300,000.

Both France and the UK claimed parts of Vanuatu in the 1880s, and agreed to manage the islands in a joint arrangement in 1906.

An independence movement arose in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was founded in 1980.

That is as a result of a lack of Knowledge.
It is an error to worship a mere mortal as god.
No man is to be worshipped as god.
Prince Philip is or was a mere creature who has gone to Eternity in Heaven or Hell based on who he believed in While on Earth.
His position of prince or King does not Matter on that side.
Their is no other to be worshipped that the ALMIGHTY GOD, The Creator of the Heavens and Earth.

We Send Prayers to the people of Vanuatu, in the Name of JESUS,that the Eyes of their Understanding be opened and they Have Encounter with JESUS Christ, the KING of kings so that they will be saved

Hey, you need to calm down. You're condemning them for worshipping a man as God simply because you were taught to only worship another man (Jesus) as God.

If Jesus could be born of a mortal, live as a mortal and die like a mortal and be God, why can't someone else be? That your own God is different doesn't necessarily make theirs to be false...you were just taught differently.

At the end we are all going to hell in another man's religion, so let's learn to be tolerant.

Wow... I'm actually surprised that it took this long for this to get to NL.

First time I bumped into it was some years ago on Listverse.com. I think it was titled "10 Extremely Weird Religions" or something like that.

You can laugh at them all you want but you must not forget that this was exactly the same way that the Rastafarian movement started. As the saying goes: If you know, you know.
So, they are not doing anything different from what the Jamaicans did when they started ascribing messiah status to a certain Haile Selassie who was at the time Emperor of Ethiopia(or Abyssinia as it was then known).

Meanwhile, here is the link to the listverse article that I mention earlier. Finally found it.

Foolishness. Some of this oyibo media organization lack sense. the took portrait photographs of prince Philip to some inland African community and gave those naive ignorant folks to pose with the dead man's pictures while claiming the worship d guy. did the tell u the even know d chap?

Your post is ladened with ignorance, sir.

First of all the guys in those pictures are not Africans. They are Ni-Vanuatu. Ni-Vanuatu are not Africans but Oceanians of Melanasian stock.

The mere fact that they appear 'black' to you does not make them 'Africans'. After all, the hood/cowl does not make the monk.

Secondly, there is nothing new or contrived about this. This has been a thing even long before a lot of us on this forum came into this world. I am actually surprised that you are actually just learning of it. That is why you should read wide and learn some more about the world you live.

The islanders knew of Prince Philip because they saw him when he visited their island with the Queen. This was far back as 1970s. For more info:

My bad, thought they were Africans. It still doesn't change the fact that Africans can do/have done such or worse.

And who told u they are not africans that must have been taken to that islands as slaves generations back? Anyway, that the saw prince Philip visit their island that year doesn't mean they took him for a God. Was there a video evidence taken from census around d island? or u believe everything some media organization puts up to u as news and wash it down ur ignorant throat.

Pls, never worship man and never support the worship of man.
As for Jesus, He first God before He became man to save man from sin.

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
