Like they say "Ignorance is bliss" you obviously have no idea guys like Okocha are the ones that paved the way for the abundance of African players in the top leagues in Europe. They faced a lot of hurdles those days coupled with pursuit of lucrative conracts taking precedence over playing in a top league. In today's market, an active Okocha will be playing for a top 4 club in England, Spain or Germany. FACT. Please take time and watch games he played and you will see he was a playmaker amd not just a dribbler (based on YouTube highlights). He was a legend and will always be.
Okocha was a pointless dribbler pre-98 not until 2000 Afcon that we started seeing end product and by the time the whole world would notice he was already clocking in on 30 years of age

Y'know its a wonder how people say weird stuffs about Austin Okocha. They look at the dude through the lens of "today's football". We seem to forget that football has evolved. First of all, whatever dribbles okocha came up with at that time is what an average fan paid for and wanted to see. It is what drew people to whatever club he played for. So in that regard, he was really successful. Pele of 1966, 1970 in today's football is at best an iniesta and not even close to messi if we want to judge it that way. But shouldnt we ask "were they in the same era?"

Okocha was bought for 12 million pounds as far back as 1998. How many african players got that as transfer fee? Respect what the man has done in football. He is an Afcon winner, an olympic gold medallist, a midfield maestro and a dribbling wizard. He has left the scene and we are yet to see anyone as creative as he is till date!
Best part, he is a Nigerian! What more can yall ask for?

I taya O!
What do you mean?

Okay smiley. They can't even stand with only six clubs.

What do you mean by pointless dribbler. Go back and watch Okocha, he usually completed over 95% of his passes after those dribbles, and made incredible assists. He was never a quiet kind of player, you can never mark him out, usually involved in build up of Play. As at that time, that was what being a "number 10" was about. That is Possession of great skills, being creative and also being able to distribute the ball from the midfield to the winger or attackers.

Football has evolved and the system has become more efficient but you cannot write of J.J Okocha's Contribution to the game. Even the great Ronaldinho mentioned he learnt the act of dribbling from Okocha.

What do you mean?

As per pele the fact he did not play in Europe is used against him but the south ameri league was better than the European league in his time. It's like saying Messi should leave spain to prove himself. He was already in one of the best leagues In the world.
Also the brazilian government declared pele a national treasure to prevent an European club from buying him.
Most members of the 1970 brazili world cup winning team were playing in South America.
Even now the brazilian league is at the level of the dutch league talk less of the 60s and 70s when it was better than European teams and santos regularly defeated European teams

Lies , lies from the pit of hell ... If I charge you to drop a source for Ronaldinho saying this now , you will begin capping .... Okocha taught Ronaldinho that was playing in Gremio how to dribble ? Rubbish talks. Okocha was an ineffective player reason he couldn't Dorn the colours of any top club. He was busy playing for clubs with Zero ambitions

I don't know why people think JJ was all dribbles and nothing.
Do you think PSG paid 16 Million in 1998 just for dribbles.
In case you don't know in Fenerbahce he almost equalled 1 goal in 2 games and a assist in 3 game. Do you call that a endless dribble.
His career stats as an attacking midfielder reads

Club
Games-491
Goal-101
Assist-52

National team
Game-75
Goal-15

Okocha did not have the luxury of playing with Luxury player but he was efficient in carrying the team.
Nigeria and Bolton are good examples

Lastly like someone said football has evolved and major focus in now on goal scoring. Zidane is regarded as one of the greatest midfielder of all time his stats is just a bit different from Okocha's own despite player playing with better players, am not saying Okocha is better undecided yet no one says he was showing off.

The only mistake JJ made was joing Bolton.
After his showing against United SAF wanted him but Okocha demanded the no 10 Jersey which cause the transfer to fail.

Our midfield maestro! I’ll never forget the day when he sliced and diced through the Cameroonians in Uyo. One of my sweetest memories in Nigerian football.

Okocha joined Bolton because Bolton offered higher wages to him than Man U.Okocha said this himself in an Instagram live video with Flavour and Phyno and not because of the number 10 jersey.

This is so apt though it's undeniable that he was over exuberant with his dribbles.

Without Okocha, I doubt we would have won the 94 AFCON, he was the X-Factor in that team. Without him ( and Amokachi) we wouldn't have gotten past the defending champions in the Semis. He was the ball holder and joggler who starved the Ivoriens of the ball in the midfield which greatly frustrated them.
He did the same in the final against the Zambians and the moment he was removed, the Zambians took over, over ran our midfield and looked like the were going to get the equalizer.

Even Pele said he was enjoying the match till Okocha was removed.

Let's give him the credit he deserves.
