Getting a degree is not a waste of time. It’s high time we stop faulting education for our own deficiencies. Some go to the university to get a degree in Animal Husbandry, some in International Relationship and lots of irrelevant courses in our society. And such individual will later blame the government and education for not getting a job after graduation.

A degree in Animal Husbandry also called Animal Science is one of the most important educational degrees for Nigeria, have you not heard of the need for ranching, poultry and dairy farms, well that is the role of a graduate in Animal Science or Husbandry.

International Relation degree will prepare a graduate for work in the diplomatic services, but will also provide skills that are relevant in the banking and multinational companies.

The problem is not with the degrees, but with the level of development of Nigeria, Nigeria has failed to develop a mature manufacturing, financial and service sector that can employ the millions of youths that are desperate for work.

No.

Problem is that enemies of Nigeria in high places subscribe to the notion of Western Education is Haram.

This makes Nigeria’s universities become like primary schools in Western countries.

I totally agree with you... Thanks to my mom she paved way for me by making sure I aquired a skill before entering the university, that what's sustained me in school... I have graduated will be going to service this year and I'm planning to acquire more skills and add a professional course to it... I have good networking skills too... Even though Nigeria is hard, the future must be bright whether it like it or not....

I have also vouch that all my kids will acquire a skill after secondary school...

May God bless your mom for directing you well and may God bless you too for being humble to learn that skill before going to university. If everyone can make their kids do this simple thing- the rate of joblessness and stress won’t be much on society. A friend of mine was a welder for 6 years before he got admitted to Uniben to study Geology- after graduating, no Geology job and his brother took him to Italy

In that same Italy where most Nigerians have been beggars for 20 years - this dude is now a subsea welder after passing an easy 3 months certification and he is rolling in cash in that same Europe where his relatives are begging

His life skill saved him in far away Europe not the Geology theory he learnt from Uniben grin

I don't agree to Ur submission, two courses u mentioned are all lucrative profession , is it animal husbandry, employment in peak milk farm @ jos , is only comparable to major oil company, ,talk of working in foreign Embassies for International Relation graduates I'd very juicy. All courses are relevance to human, existence & development, It is the application of the acquired knowledge in solving Humans needs that place relevance to it

Improve on your degree

Add relevant skill set

Start from somewhere ( volunteer / intern / low pay job. ) And then move on

Better still learn and start your own business, that's why you're a graduate , you should have the ability to create

Me want to add more to my degree and other certificates

Trust they are doors only degree certificate can open and in most cases even at the work place, it serves as a tool to fulfill all reightouness.....the main attention is on your KNOW HOW and NOT YOUR DEGREE

Bro is not even easy to get intern this days, they will require 2:1 minimum and age must below 24 with Nysc discharge cert with atleast 1-2 years experience. Bro many are still filtered out

Never go to school for the sole reason of getting a job, instead go to school to gain knowledge, broaden your social network and learn social skills like public speaking, and all that- Do not expect to be rewarded with a job after graduation because of your paper certificate.

Instead, while in school, learn a life skill- to be an electrician, auto mechanic, welder, tailor, hair dresser, plumber, draftsman, truck driver, barber or culinary specialist- all that.

Please chose one of the above and learn it - and while you are doing your NYSC, look for somewhere to work for free so you can sharpen the side skill you learnt while in the university for 4 years - For instance, you can work for free in a local mechanic shop on saturdays from 8am to 2pm in the state you are posted to and once NYSC is over - you are the winner

IF you get a job with your degree, it’s all good

IF you don’t get a job with your degree - you create a job for yourself with your life skill

Another easier option is learn the skill immediately you complete SS3 - learn the skills first while you prepping to go to University - after 2 years of learning work, you go to University and while you are in University you work only on saturday from 8am- 2pm to be gaining proficiency - when doing your NYSC, you should use that time to register your own business of the skill you learnt and after NYSC you are your own Boss- the degree you have will make u more successful because you won’t be like the average mechanic who is an illiterate- your ways of conducting business will be different and your clients will be the rich and famous because they won’t be insulting you because they know you are educated- and you will manage your resources better too than the average road side mechanic

That’s a win - win siatuation - learn a life skill o
thank you for you contributions. I am a graduate, finished serving NYSC, and also took a vocational training on auto mechanic, I am happy I took the zeal to learn auto mechanic and diagnostic. Now I left my certificate on my box and I'm using my skill as an auto mechanic to earn a living. I know I will be popular one day.

Wow- I am so so proud of you, may God bless your hustle and no one will take your degree from you because you are mechanic - in fact you have double advantage in life and if the degree brings an opportunity you take it, if the mechanic comes with opportunity you are there to take it too - only one route no good to view life oooo- You are blessed !!!!

At least you had a degree to dump. Now, if you didn’t and want to relocate to another nation as a businessman

Us- you have to have up to 10 million dollars (I believe) to invest to get an opportunity for a green card via that route.

Canada runs into hundreds of thousand CAD to invest to get a PR opportunity as an investor.

Ireland, UK same thing. How many percentage of businessmen can boast of such to tie down for PR? Literally maybe only 10% of the society. Majority can only dream but guess what a many well educated people are able to get anywhere they choose to and after settling in a good society could catch up .

To choose a Nigerian to play basketball in Europe at elite level is unusual, in fact a miracle. So if you are lucky, it doesn’t mean it’s a viable advice or sure path to succeed when you compare it to being educated.

I met a naija guy in university here in America when I was doing my masters those days.

This dude was making an average of $300 a week fixing hair based on appointment- just weekends only and he was making $1,800 working in the school library from M-F

All as an international masters student he was raking in $3,000 a month easily

Complex questions such as this deserve a layered and nuanced answer. It is simplistic to say "yes, it is worth it" or "no, it isn't".
A more appropriate answer: it depends.

It depends on an individual's circumstances, available resources, talents, goals & aspirations, 'calling' (if already discerned), market needs, timing, etc.

It also depends on how education is defined. More on that later.

What's right's for one person at one point in time may not work for another, or in a different season. It would also be reductive to attempt to outline the number of possible situations people operate in - because there are just too many to count or imagine.

Nonetheless, here are a few things that can be taken to the bank:
- Education is not all about going to a University or Polytechnic; it comes in various forms and it is important to obtain it one way or another
- Education (refer to point above for scope) prepares people to handle life better and contribute more to society, and it should be continuous
- Education usually works better with intentionality; in other words, it is helpful to know why it is being acquired and apply oneself fully
- Education, when properly applied can significantly impact a person's quality of life
- The results of acquiring education vary from person to person for an array of reasons; too many to get into. It won't always appear to pay off, but that does not reflect poorly on the concept of education itself (for example, cars should not be denounced or reviled altogether because car accidents happen)
- Even when education does not appear to open doors financially or improve a person's 'quality of life', it is still useful. Enlightenment is a noble pursuit in itself
- If you have the opportunity to obtain advanced formal education (University/Polytechnic/College of Education etc), do so. Even if you are frightful of the ROI and even if you are not clear on what you want to study (maybe choose Philosophy or History). Allow yourself to learn how to learn and how to think, and open your mind to a world beyond the one you currently exist in
- If you cannot obtain formal education, concentrate on the alternatives. You do not have to be left out
- If you are not clear on what to study, struggle with resource constraints, or do not know how to approach this matter as a whole, seek advice from those qualified to offer it. I would be happy to provide counselling without charge. Contact me!

In summary:
To truly embrace education for what it offers is to embrace empowerment in various forms, and to denounce ignorance (which is actually vile). And while one is to be calculated about what form of education they should obtain, efforts should be made to somehow commit to learning - and to commit to doing so continuously.
TLDR: Get some type of education, and keep learning - it is worthwhile

I studied Geography and Planning, came out top of my class and I'm about obeying the clarion call (NYSC)

Presently i have no skills and i look forward to better myself, family and humanity at large

I'm in my mid 20s..

How do i achieve the above aforementioned coming from a poor background?

How do i utilized my degree certificate judiciously and better skills options to achieve my dream or propel me to my Eldorado?

What's the best advice for me from you?
