Hello nairalanders pls I need your unbiased advice.

So I started my MSc program long before the lockdown since I had no job and needed to upgrade, after class work and examination the lockdown couldn't allow me complete my project lab work, all these while I was actively looking for a job.

Luckily I got one with a private firm and decent pay (110k) but doesn't give me time to do any other thing, now my project defence is in a months time, I applied for 6 weeks leave without pay so I can concentrate and complete my project and defence since my job is overly demanding but was denied.

My only option is to resign and come back to re-apply for the job after my defense, I seriously need this job because I have alot of financial responsibilities at the moment.

I am tempted to to let go of the defence for now and focus on the job till am financially stable.

Pls I need your candid advice.
Complete your master degree.
It will place you on better rung of life's ladder

I was in your situation just that in my own case, I was working as a casual staff so it was not really difficult for me to resign. After the completion of my Master's Degree, I waited for more than 3 years to get a decent job. My advice, kindly discuss with your Supervisor and if possible, differ your program. It is extremely difficult to get good jobs in Nigeria irrespective of your qualification

In the Labour Market, experience + BSc. Gives you an edge to person with MSc. + BSc - work experience.

So I will advise you you stay put on the job as a priority then consider finishing your Masters as second option. You went to do Masters because you want to be outstanding amongst your peers or fellow job hunters and not that you love to read or you wanna lecture. Now, be for ethe Masters you've already gotten what you may be looking for so why quit?

In a worst case scenario you differ your program with your school by one year and concentrate on the job to get an experience. You seeking for a leave or sick leave for a job that you are not even up to one year is not good and may tarnage your reputation in the job.
Companies don't like people whom may be given excuses anyhow they may see you as one whom put other things ahead of the company's business and for that reason you may be entering the black book.

You are a young lad I guess with no experience, so just relax for the job and defer your program.
That's my own opinion and the choice is yours.

very difficult situation. I work in a federal public institution here in naija. To be eligible for study leave without pay in my organisation, u would have worked for at least 3 years or so, cant be too sure, but i know it is 3 or above, else u resign and reapply later. Had friends that resigned, went to UK and did masters, and even worked in UK and later relocated and reapplied, but was offered the level they were at when they left, while we had gotten 2 promotions after that. Some accepted and some rejected, such is life.
Since urs is a private firm, i advice u continue with ur study, e go better.

Bad advise. Don't adhere to this else you will regret it. Many people telling you @Blessynene to resign or quit your job are not advising you rightly. If you quit your job and round up your program did they have a job to employ you? If you actually got the job genuinely did you know how you suffered to get it? How long did you stay at home for getting this job. @Blessynene don't think if you quit the job then wants to come back again after one or two months they will absorb you it is a wishful thought that the chance of that happening could jutst be 10%. Don't quit your job oo no matter what.

Tough one. If you have a reason for doing the Masters, then rough it. I would shun the Master and focus on saving enough money from my Job to run a Master abroad in the future with the aim of settling outside. Or could defer my master's if that's possible, and return to it at a later date if the job is not as sustainable as I thought. It's all up to you, and hopefully you make the most sensible choice

That's the thing. If she got it genuinely, then she can always get another.

110k. That's honestly not hard to come by.

But she abandons the masters to focus on a job she can always get is actually very preposterous.

All that time and commitment and studying to just go away like that? You can't quantify that. And it will become super difficult to make out that time and psychological readiness to start all over again at a later time.

The only time it will be sensible to forego her program is if she knows deep down she really never intended to do it, or that she sees no relevance for it moving forward.

But if she knows acquiring that degree is inevitable for her, then it's a very simple matter, she should just quit. Later will be more complicated.

I'm not advising unrealistically. I've been there, and I quit, and it was higher than that amount.

Also get to look for better jobs . In this useless economy N110,000 is not a decent job . For one to be okay in this hardship one needs nothing less than 700k from a monthly paying job and other side hustles .

I wish you well in your future endeavors!
She's lucky to even have that 110 job pay, to be realistic. 700k is a wild goose chase. it takes you years of work and promotions to get to that level.

Half of the people telling you to quit your job that you need 700k to live in Nigeria don’t make quarter of that. Use your head. Job no de Nigeria. Defer your school. Plan your annual one month leave if you get one, to coincide with your defense.

If you're sure that after your masters the company will employ you back and even promote you, or You are sure of another job after your masters, resign and go for it. but if not; My advice is that you continue you job and get yourself stable financially first.
You can always go for your masters anytime you feel like but you will not always get a reasonable job anytime you look for it.

Thing about this

I think Masters programme have expandable time for completion... I mean it can be completed even if someone doesn't meetup with the original intended time especially if it's a mixed mode (course work & research)... Be it Full time or part time.... So if this is possible, then I will suggest that since it looks difficult to obtain a permit from your job, I will advise you confidentially and discreetly consult with your head in Uni., narrate things and possibly ask some options instead of leaving/exiting your job for now... maybe you should still do some little time...
The truth is, it is almost impossible to get a decent job in this current Nigerian system without some factors in your possession/favour...
..Note that your MSc degree certificate can never be a waste too.... I want to believe you have high places to go in life, but you must be wise.
Pray to God for direction and favour in all.

6weeks leave with pay or without pay is too long for a fresher in a company like you or a company with demanding job delivery

I would advice u to check the actual duration of your defense and apply same. Because there is no way you can defense your project for whole 6 good weeks.

I did my ICAN exams without going to tuition centres from PEII to PEIII even without taking a day off except 2 exam days. I got all my papers. So if you re determined retain your job and seek one or few days off in a interval until you re done. Certainly they will grant you such request.

Why will a graduate thinks that a job that pays 110k monthly is decent pay ?
Personally I will advise that you find a way to round up your Master.

I know things are terrible in this country but please prioritize personal and professional development.

I earn roughly 200% of that amount as an undergraduate student working just 10hours a week.

Congratulations to you dear and I am happy for you that you took the risk and it later paid off that's fine. But different strokes for different folks. The risk you took worked for you doesn't mean it must work for the other. I believed she can defer her admission or studentship by one year. There is always such an allowances for students in Nigeria. The question now would be what is the chance of getting a job like this or better after possibly 2-6months after graduation? Remember you are not the only one that has Masters degree in your discipline now and the number keeps rising. Well the chouce is hers. Let me stop here and thanks for the feedback. Have a great week.

In my case, I’d love to find out from anybody experienced on this issue bothering me.
I have an LLB currently, I’d love to further my degree to my Master’s level. I am considering a Masters in Law (LL.M) in University of Lagos. I’m wondering if it would be possible also, to pursue a Master’s in Political Science with my LLB in same University. And what are the possibilities that I can lecture “Political Science” in a Nigerian University with an LLB, and a Masters in Political Science? Thank you very much.

I also need funds for my Masters degree. Hence I’d be selling Landed properties in Igbo-Etche Port Harcourt at really affordable prices. Please do well to relate me to buyers, or check my profile.
Na community dey get pikin wey do well.
What you have asked can be easily done abroad, not saying not possible in Nigeria, but may be tough. . A way out is looking for political science online courses. However, even your LLB, consider doing it abroad.

For you to grow in teaching line in Nigeria, you need a PhD. I even advise you to get it first before attempting to enter. Your case will be like the military where by a degree holder moves straight to ranking officers, while a non degree starts from the very lowest. You can teach with a masters degree, but hmmmm.

Consider Canada. I know masters of Law is a bit cheap there.

OP, this is the answer you find answer in. All I am going to add is that ONLY you understand the condition you are in., and you can make decision for yourself. But one thing is sure, your employer does not value you like the poster above has said. Therefore, prepare your mind to start looking for another job. You cannot stay there for long.

Many people have suggested the option of defering your defence which you should consider. The other option I will give you is that if your course adviser is nice or you see a good lecturer in your department, talk to the person for advice. They may come up with solutions for you. But if defering is the best option, go for it ONLY if you cannot afford to lose your job. While looking for a solution, you may get better offers.

I will not just advise you to leave your job because only you understand the financial situation you are in, but remember that you should not make a long term plan for your present job. Start looking elsewhere ASAP while still there if you decide to stay. And dont hesitate to quit the moment you secure another one, your boss does not value you.

Goodluck!

This is where you need to be smart. A decoy of some stuffs will put the company in check.

Ask for 15days working leave. Tell the management you have a pressing issue to attend to.

Few days to the elapse of the 15days, frame sick leave palava. It will extend for another 7working days. You can pack drugs with sick face to work. Gradually you are getting your 6weeks.

You may not get 6weeks required. Let all these reqest be towards your defense. Prior days, you need to be smart. Colleagues in school should update yoy of urgent development while those at work should stand in when need be.

Proper excuses will show you need the leave. Show you are worried and disturbed at work. Fake phone calls that will make your colleagues and supervisor jittery. They will plead on your behalf.

Don't leave the work. Finish your Master's.

I was once in you shoes. It ain't easy but at the end, you feel relieved and happy.

Best of luck
