The topic says Pyrate 'confraternity',I wonder why this people above me are shouting 'cultism',is it that some people cannot comprehend or is it ignorance of the highest order.
Merriam Webster dictionary defines confraternity as a society devoted to a religious or a charitable cause.
I certainly know from information available to all, that the pyrate confraternity is a charity organization, made up of like minds with the goal of creating an egalitarian society where the strong protects the weak and men are weighed by the strength of their character and not by the colour of their skins, religion or ethnicity. Little wonder why they are highly revered in and outside Nigeria for notable achievements in humanitarian activities and social reengineering.
I guess if this isn't a noble society of men, they likes of Prof Wole Soyinka and hundreds of notable men who associates with this group, could have dissociated for preservation of their reputation and image.
You are right but they are probably viewing it from the angle that PC gave birth to the other violent cults we have today. This is also a fact

Something very funny happened many years ago. I was standing on the side of the road when a bus passed and written on its side were the words, "Confraternity of Christian Mothers".

One man on the roadside exclaimed. "Confraternity! These people no know the meaning of the word when dey dey use. Confra! How person go use that kind word"?

I almost died of laughter

Confraternity is cult here in Nigeria, cult is confraternity, they are very interchangeable

Go thru the history of these pyrate confraternity and tell me their notable charity works

Soyinks might have had a wonderful idea, but that idea was defeated long ago, and that degenerated into all these cult nemesis we have in the society today.

All these young boys who are recruited into it don't even know why or when soyinka set up the pyrates, all they are told is to look out for opponents, identify with a particular color and slang, buy axe, and if small money dey make Dem buy locally made guns, just to kill and main opponents, ask them what's the fight against their opponents is, they don't know, until they are butchered miserably

Ignorance is the bane of our society. Why not go to the website of the Pyrates Confraternity to learn more. The PC is not and has never been a cult. Which young boys recruited into it are you talking about. You can only join the PC as a graduate who has concluded his Youth Service. If I follow your reasoning then even Churches can be classified as cults since they are also confraternities by definition. Nuff said

Merriam Webster defines that in pages.
Here in reality on Nigeria soil it has a different meaning.
“You dey mad” have different meaning either as joke or as curse word.
Don’t be too literal with everything.
Soyinka is looked up by many and should desist from this idealism.
It has corrupted many youth.
No like anything is bad in literal sense by context of Nigeria now has changed

Oga, go and read that post that you first quoted, you'll see the answer to your questions there.

Read this again.

I wrote that many fraternities in Nigerian universities transformed into youth gangs in the 1970s and 1980s and in response to that Professor Wole Soyinka ordered that the Pyrate Fraternity, now known as the National Association of Seadogs, should pull out of the universities. Those youth gangs of the 1970s and 1980s have now become international mafia syndicates with branches in places like Italy, Canada and the US. What Professor Wole Soyinka started in 1952 was a fraternity, not a youth gang.

Can you give me the identities of the people that Professor Wole Soyinka's Pyrates killed in the 1950s when it was active in universities??

Is the Confraternity of Christian Mothers not a confraternity in Nigeria? Who have they killed?
..... Bros what wole soyinka meant may be good but what the pirates are known for these days just like every other cult groups out there is terror, blood shed and crime...... U wanna tell me that none of the people that attended the burial of this man have in one way or the other shed blood? My question to u and wole soyinka now is this, having known what most of our students do or have done all in the name of fraternity, why still associate himself with them?

Stop barking like an insane dog. Fraternal societies are not cults.
In the United States they have existed in all universities for more than two centuries and practically all university students are pledged members of one fraternal society or the other.

Confraternity ➜ Youth gang ➜Mafia.

1) Fraternities and Sororities: A confraternity, fraternity or sorority (and in, America, Greek letter organisation) are social clubs in universities in many parts of the world. These associations are very common in American universities and very many Americans, including prominent politicians, businessmen, and entertainment stars are members of the associations. The associations were generally formed to help their members academically and serve as a forum for people to network and connect. Fraternity = brotherhood, sorority = sisterhood. Former president George H. W. Bush was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale, Bill Clinton is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma, and George W. Bush is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale like his father. Basketball star, Michael Jordan, is a member of Omega Psi Phi, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and comedian and actor Cedric “The Entertainer” is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

What Wole Soyinka started was a fraternity that was meant to be like the fraternities in American universities.

2) Youth gangs: A gang is a group or society of associates, friends or members of a family with a defined leadership and internal organization that identifies with or claims control over territory in a community and engages, either individually or collectively, in illegal, and possibly violent, behaviour.

Many youth gangs sprang up in the United States in the period between the 1940s and the 1960s. The most well known are the Bloods and the Crips. These youth gangs control territory through acts of violence and intimidation. They usually have their unique colours and symbols like handshakes, walking styles and dances. They could violently attack and even kill someone for wearing their colour in their territory. They raise funds through illegal means like bullying and intimidation, drug sales, etc.

Many fraternities in Nigerian universities became youth gangs in the 1970s and most especially in the 1980s. They engaged in violent acts like murder and assault, gruesome initiation rituals, etc. In response to this, Professor Wole Soyinka pulled the Pyrates Fraternity, now known as the National Association of Seadogs, out of the universities.

3) Mafia: A mafia is a type of organized crime syndicate whose primary activities are protection racketeering, arbitrating disputes between criminals, and brokering and enforcing illegal agreements and transactions. Mafias often engage in secondary activities such as gambling, loan sharking, drug-trafficking, prostitution, and fraud. Examples of Mafia syndicates include the Cosa Nostra, the Yakuza, the Camorra and the Bratva.

The members of these 1980s and 1990s youth gangs have become older and some of them have moved out of Nigeria. They have established their organisations as criminals syndicates in places like Canada, Italy and the United States. They engage in drug trafficking, pimping prostitutes and other illegal activities and they have formed agreements with or fought wars against the Italian Mafia, the American Mafia and other such illegal organisations.

Some members of these organisations have become government officials and high ranking members of the society in Nigeria.

What Wole Soyinka founded in 1952 was a fraternity, not a youth gang or mafia syndicate.

That's what we are telling you.

We are not saying that there are no violent organisations in universities. There are. Those are youth gangs.

What Professor Wole Soyinka started was not a youth gang.

Some of the fraternities in universities turned into youth gangs and because of that Professor Soyinka ordered that there should be no Pyrates Fraternity in universities.

Those that still exist in universities are not part of the original Pyrates Fraternity (now known as National Association of Seadogs).

There are fraternities and sororities in Nigeria that are not youth gangs. I gave you an example, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.

However, dangerous youth gangs exist in Nigerian universities and they've gotten worse because some of them have become mafia organisations.

Professor Wole Soyinka is a member of a confraternity.

So, according to you, Professor Soyinka is involved in violent acts like murder, etc.

Not so?

If someone calls himself a Christian and kills somebody and says that it is God that told him to kill somebody, it therefore means that all Christians are killers and the person is a Christian, not so?

If someone calls himself a Muslim and kills somebody and says that it is Allah that told him to kill somebody, it therefore means that all Muslims are killers and the person is a Muslim, not so?
