Is a welcome development. I believe integration will help to enlighten some of this teacher.. also it will help to keep a profile record of this teacher...but the only problem self is will the government allows it to work cause we all known they are good at talk with no action...the previous administration did lay foundation for this project but you see most of this leader are short sighted .... a leader is one who can foresee problem in future and start making plan towards a solution to that problem in the present...this what distinguish the previous administration from the present one |

Beancounter93: If you are in NW Nigeria, they are 90% Fulani. If you are in NE, they are mist likely to be Kanuri. You hardly see true Hausa people engaging in such a lazy occupation of teaching & surviving off children in the name of imparting religious knowledge. 1 Like |

Teachers to be awarded nce? Basically, one who doesn't have at least nce is not a teacher based on trcn law.U must have gotten nce before teaching. To reform alhmajiri system, nice holders who are grounded in islamic teaching shld be recruited.Anything short of that,is anti extant education law for teaching in Nigeria. Those who want to be teachers, should enrol for nce programme which takes a minimum of 3yrs.At d end,nce certificates will be awarded to them |

Beancounter93: Knowing how to read and write doesn't qualify anyone to become a teacher. There are steps to this process but naija is ruled by a major id!ot and sub id!ot so anything goes. |

Lagos State is talking about reforming TECHNOLOGY this one is taking about reforming Islamic Education that has not brought any single development apart from banditry, kidnapping, jihad, and killings. Shame! 3 Likes |

csamii: I used the term 'read and write'...because some on this thread assumed that all Almajiri teachers can't read and write. (N.B-I myself am opposed to the Almajiri system, and would very much love to see it eliminated...and every kid in secular schools. And funnily enough so would El Rufai...the guy admires the Finnish system of education . But many Northerners don't want to see the system go...so frocing the Almajiri teachers to get a qualificaiton weeds out the 'bad eggs' and replaces them with good eggs...and hopefully modernises the whole system.) 1 Like |

matm: That's why I bolded some sentences in that piece. The almajiri teachers are people who teach at informal Almajiri schools. What the government wants to do is what is written in the last sentence of your post. Basically the government is designing a curriculum for almajiri education and sending it to the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) for approval. When it is approved, almajiri teachers would have to enrol for NCE in order to be certified and only certified teachers will be allowed in Kaduna (basically unqualified teachers will be arrested an prosecuted). Basically, the government is trying to integrate almajiri education with formal education. It has already begun the process by banning a lot of the features of the informal almajiri education, such as begging and having underage children roaming around. 2 Likes |

Sometimes i feel the type of educational system we adopted is a complete fraud or a deliberate act by the our colonial masters to keep us perpetually at the bottom of events. Reading comments from the young and not too young in this forum, i thereby conclude that we have a real logway to go. Our hypocrisy, nepotism and self illusion is out of this world. I will conclude by saying an adage in Yoruba that " A child that has not been privileged to visit other people's farms will erroneously think his father's farm is the largest in the whole wide world". |

The British knew how far the Yorubas and the Igbos would go. To truncate this, Satanic Lugard forcefully wedded them to the backward thinking, gworo eating, ill fated Hausa-Fulani nomads. No fortune teller is needed to foretell the future of this unholy wedlock. There is no Nigeria. Non Hausa-Fulani peoples should extricate themselves from these heartlessly dangerous Mohammedans or continue to suffer and smile. 1 Like |

naptu2: You can't fix a flawed system built on a very weak foundation. Replace Almajiri education with Western education and add quranic studies as they do in the South West. |

To be awarded an NCE in the South, u need to have a first school leaving certificate, successfully concluded ur WASSCE with a minimum of five (5) credits. Then you’ll attend a govt approved college of education! So why should someone down South that has gone through all that to get the degree be equated with an illiterate Mallam? Why is merit always being sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity to appease the north? And the same shallow minds down South that voted this calamitous govt are hailing this despite the fact that were they reside college degrees are not given as gifts. Ona no go fit ever get sense again! |

Even the so called western education in other parts of Nigeria is a fraud. An education that can't refine the mental faculty of those who went through it should be called what it is = Fraud! |

They will just be awarded nce just like that without putting in the needed work. Like a gift for doing nothing thereby creating more quota nce holders. Tomorrow those ones will use it to apply for positions they re not qualified for. |

sulaak: That's essentially what they are doing, but you cannot make changes against the will of the people. Governments in Northern Nigeria have tried to ban the almajiri system, but they've failed because the people are against such bans. Therefore the government is integrating it with the regular school system, but the people will still have the name that they want. (Remember that this is a democracy, not a dictatorship and you can't ignore the will of the people and impose whatever you want). 1 Like |

naptu2: You're mixing it up. Reqular schools have IRS/IRK to cater for Islamic knowledge/education. In fact, Arabic is an option in secondary school. Almajiri is seen by those who patronise it as their alternative to Western education. So merging it will mean a death of the system itself and I doubt those who believe in it will accept that. |

Obviously that guy does not know what he's talking about. The ban on the almajiri system of education fails for 2 main reasons (A) the parents went to Quranic schools and they want their children to also attend those schools (B) The teachers in such schools would be out of a job if the schools are banned and so they do everything possible to ensure that they are not banned. The parents have more confidence in the teachers than they do in the government. This new system will ensure that the teachers are accommodated by training them and ensuring that they are certified and then integrating them into the regular school system. To show you that he does not know what he is talking about, he says that IRK and Arabic are included in western schools in the south-west and that's why there's no almajiri schools in the south-west. He has obviously never heard of Ile Kewu. Now what's the difference between Ile Kewu in the South-West and Almajiri schools in the north? The teachers in Almajiri schools in the north depend on the proceeds of alms that have been collected by their students. In order words, their students go out to beg on the streets and then bring the proceeds back to their mallams. In the South-West, parents pay the Ile Kewu to have their children educated there. This new system will ensure that the Almajiri teachers are on the payroll of the government and they would not have to send their students out to beg for alms. That's also why it was mentioned in the article that begging is illegal. 1 Like |
