Dear doctors in the house, I'm a third year medical student in a nigerian university, I got an offer to study medicine in eastern Europe, will it be wise to accept to offer and start over again or should I complete my studies here.
My major reason for accepting the offer is the fact that I'm scared that I wont be able to practice (or it would be very difficult) to practice in the country of my choice, because I heard nigerian certificates arent held with high regards compared to others from European countries
I just want to know if it's possible to practice somewhere else after completing my studies here with a nigerian degree

You are in the third year of a 6 year programme, while not complete the Nigerian medical degree and travel to Europe for postgraduate medical study.

Ok..... I think you should finish first....

My first question will be which country?

Had an experience recently in a teaching hospital, I was seen by a house officer and referred to another unit. The resident doctor i met told me it was a wrong diagnosis, and then he said, 'na all these Ukraine trained doctors '
Very very very right. If it's eastern bloc (Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Bulgaria etc), forget it. Finish ur MBBS here, while doing house job start writing your exams to leave the country

You had better leave while you still have time. I will give you a short story; my sister was in final year when our neighbor's daughter went to Ukraine to study medicine. My sister is still in final year writing her final year's exams while the other girl is already in 300level medicine.

Please finish your programme in Nigeria. It's only 3 years remaining. Don't listen to anybody advising you to go and start afresh in Eastern Europe.

Like some have said, there is a big difference between Eastern and Western Europe. Eastern Europe includes countries like Ukraine, Romania, Poland etc. Even if you graduate from medicine there, their doctors aren't very well paid. You will still need to migrate to the UK, US, Canada, Australia etc and believe me, you will still sit for exactly the same exams as your counterparts who finished from Nigeria.

Studying in Nigeria will expose you to a great deal of knowledge. Your communication skill will be poorer but you will be a very good doctor. You can pass the licencing exams of any country once you graduate from Nigeria.

If you need more info, you can pm me. I don't want to say much here, but I have much more experiences and examples to share with you.

Western Europe like UK, Germany is different from Eastern Europe oo, he will still be needed to come back to his country of origin after studies and they're not regarded as much, we have some of them here in Nigeria who can't practice outside like their counterparts who studied in Nigeria
what about if it's Estonia which is also Eastern Europe? Estonia is one of highly value technologically inclined nation, research more about Estonia ok.

Whoever told you the Nigerian Medical certificate is useless is either ignorant or intentionally deceiving you. Top choices for doctors to practice remain US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany. Both Nigerian and Eastern European graduates will write same licensing exams to practice in those places. I should add that many Eastern european graduates come back to write the MDCN exams and do housemanship/Internship (at least, even if they'll japa eventually). Not sure exactly why it's difficult to stay back and practice over there.

For those telling you the Naija certificate is highly valuable and that Naija docs are highly sought-after, I'll say that's not entirely true. On the international scene, It's about how well you perform in their licensing exams and the other stuffs on your application (such as research, observerships etc). What I can tell you is that there is a level of toughness that the Nigerian system baptize you with that enables you to survive and push through (sometimes even, to excel) in those saner climes.

This is getting too long (Sorry!). If you do have specific concerns, I'll be happy to chat more.

Just leave while you still have the opportunity.

I am a Senior Registrar in a Federal Teaching Hospital but I'm preparing towards writing PLAB and joining my classmates already living and working in the UK.

I used to belong to the "stay and help fix Naija" gang till my eyes were opened to the fact that this country will only go from bad to worse.

SR, you should know better to advise him properly.
I know doctors who migrated to the UK immediately after their housejob. This guy in question is 4-5 years from the completion of house job.
If he goes to Eastern Europe, he will still need to return to Nigeria after 5 years study to do MDCN exams before he can do housemanship. More so, many of those Eastern European trained doctors aren't that knowledgeable.

Did you just say east Europe? Run!!!! Run for your dear life!!! Don’t go to that part of the world plsssss….

Always go to where you ll be celebrated not where you would be treated like a slave. East Europe only need your school fees, they hate everything about you being black.

Young man, stay and finish your studies in Nigeria before venturing anywhere.

Thank you very much for your answer sir

The cost is pretty much settled and by the grace of God that wont be an issue
The only thing hindering me is the fact that I'll have to waste the 3 years spent here
So I want to be sure its was worth it
I met a consultant here in my school that advised me against it, telling me doctors are better paid and treated here in nigeria than the countries people go to.

But from your answer you say it's easier for medical doctors that studied abroad to secure jobs abroad
So it's significantly harder for doctors that studied in Nigeria to secure jobs abroad?

thank you very much for your response

Your first degree in the country isnt an hinderance to you practicing in any country of your choice.... The most impt is your decision to move anywhere your spirit leads you.
Focus on USA or UK.
Canada and Australia na long route..... Iree oooo.... Dont dull, complete your education in naija.... Na cheap school fees for here.
But if ur parent gather, the only place i would ask u to drop ur pursuit in naija for is USA. That is if you can afford it and you have the admission

Strange how Nigerians will be cussing the country up and down and if you challenge them, they will point to the poor, saying just how the poor are suffering, poor cant eat, poor are dying, everyone is poor and wretched, people are being killed and maimed, yet they are first ones to encourage doctors that are needed by the poor above all, to flee the country. If you encourage your best to flee who will advocate for the poor?

I personally never take complaining civil society Nigerians seriously for they are often immoral and self seeking hypocrites. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with Nigeria beyond partisan politics. Partisan politics in Nigeria is a cesspit full of contesting and bickering bunch of turd!

Doctors the world over seek employment in nations other than of birth or and training. Uk trained doctors emigrate to US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and vise versa. If a Nigerian doctor wants to practice abroad just provide him with the information he wants without underscoring your advices with politically informed digs at the country.

If you've got the money pls go far away from Nigeria. You'd finish before your current level mates when you port to Europe except you're in ABUAD or some private university. Don't even think too much.

Medical Education in Nigeria is better than Eastern Europe. Most doctors who trained in Eastern Europe don't practice there. They still end up writing PLAB, ECFMG and other exams in order to practice in a more civilized country.

Complete your education in Nigeria and move to UK, USA, Canada or Australia when you are done.

Afriqan:

Your choice. Seems as though there's an opportunity cost for each of your decisions. Cost wise, it's cheaper to study here and you have 4 yrs to go.

However, since you don't intend to practice in Nigeria, it'd be a good idea to travel out once and for all. You can practice in Europe without hassles so that's the benefit.

Those 3 years will really be wasted if you stay in Naija.

You would use what you have already learnt to help you when you start all over again.

You better get out now that you have the opportunity.

All Nigerian doctors are useless including the ones studying in the university.
Stupid Nigerian doctors , a girl who got bitten by a dog ,they treated her using tetanus medication. She died eventually..
Whacked Nigerian doctors.

Another friend of mine had mental issue and he traveled abroad, the hospital abroad needed to know his medical history or type of mental illness, all the stupid Nigerian psychiatrist docs could not determine the type of mental illness he had. It took an American doctor who went through the reports, and medical history, read it and came up with the illness associated to be schizophrenia. But stupid Nigerian doctors kept on using a general term "mental illness" . Does it mean we don't know schizophrenia?

I also have a biracial friend whose dad(white) is in a hospital in the UK, he said to his son, " the doctors and nurses are mostly Nigerians", they seem not to know what they are doing. They do not take care of him. He said, they must have graduated from Nigeria but did not study in the UK.
What am I saying, you better run and go abroad and study instead of that hell hole.

Go to a system where they use machine to treat you not some old Egyptian medicine we still use back in Nigeria where we begin trial and error.
