Gunmen suspected to be bandits have invaded the military barracks of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, and carted away a herd of cattle in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident happened around 2:00 am as the gunmen arrived at the barracks and started shooting sporadically in the air to cause panic in the Army community.

Though the exact number of the cattle stolen could not be determined, an eyewitness told SaharaReporters on Thursday evening that the cows would not be less than a hundred in number based on previous experience.

According to the source who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the cattle were owned by Army officers.

He, therefore, expressed shock that the barracks could be so porous for bandits to attack without any form of resistance.

The source told SaharaReporters the first time it happened was last year and that about 400 cows were taken away by the bandits in what he described as a bloodless attack on the barracks.

He, however, said some of the animals found their way back to their ranch.

The Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji in Kaduna State is a training facility for the Nigerian Armed Forces, including the army, air force, and navy.

“Around 2:00 am on Thursday, gunmen invaded where cattle are kept at Jaji barracks in Kaduna here. Those cattle are owned by some military officers. So, they are kept at the Mammy market, inside the barracks at Jaji here. I cannot tell you the number of cows taken by these bandits but before the operation, they were shooting sporadically in the air.

“Even the people outside the barracks heard the gunshots. And this was not the first time. The first time it happened was last year. That one happened close to the Firing Range. They went there and took away all the cattle. About 400 cows were taken away. Some of them (cows) managed to come back to their ranch,” the source said.

When asked if the bandits came with a truck or any vehicle to convey the cattle, the eyewitness said they did not drive any truck.

He said they took the cattle away on foot.

The source expressed concern that the barracks always accommodate Army officers from other African and Asian countries who take some courses at the college, adding that it would be an embarrassment should a foreigner be abducted on Nigerian soil.

He also lamented that both the military personnel and civilians living in the barracks and the areas surrounding the military base are no longer safe.

He said there have been several attacks launched by bandits on the communities.

“They didn’t come with any vehicle. They would just come on foot and push the cattle away. This is telling us that one day, even, the Army officers in the barracks can be kidnapped. And the barracks are one of the most strategic barracks in the country.

“In the barracks there, there are houses that even foreign Army officers that are taking courses live in. The Jaji barracks are among the largest in the country and if this kind of thing is happening there, that means we are not safe anymore.

“There was a time even military officers from African and Asian countries came for courses there. Majors and Captains do come there from different countries. Every graduation, you will notice that about 17 African countries participate. It means that even foreign officers can be abducted. And if this happens, it is a slap on the face of the country.

“I don’t know if the military authorities are doing anything to see how they can tackle the issue. What I want you to know is that even the immediate areas surrounding the barracks are being attacked daily, and nothing is done. Outside the cantonment, barely a kilometre away is not safe,” he said.

Alot of ESN commanders has been arrested and there camps bursted.

The quietness didn’t come because of all these arrest stories. Igbos will not allow unrest to affect businesses.

When I tell people that this rascality won't last, they think am joking, majority of IPOB fanatics are abroad igbos, the madness is not affecting them, so those it's affects are fighting back with reasons, because majority of IPOB people based at home are of the Lower economic class, so a little empowerment will assuage most of them.

It's good to hype your tribe but that's not how conflicts like this work, They've already gone past the stage where people would determine their existence. They now have guns of high calibre and not just support, opinions or actions of the people doesn't really matter anymore.

We are not out of the woods yet, attacks will probably still happen.

So what did they do that caused the sudden drop in attacks by ESN. How did businessman or average igboman contributed to the recent restiveness ?

NNPC said it now spends N9bn on subsidy daily as consumption reaches over 100m litres per day which equates to N3.2trn($7.9bn) per annum if the cycle continues.
NNPC blames it on smuggling

Cost of building a proper quality border security architecture will cost $1bn max which will end or reduce smuggling of all sort of contraband like PMS,Weapons etc to the bearest level.

But we have clowns in government

Some comments here says, ISWAP is dying down and being limited to carry out hit and run operations. I feel its not so.
What's the main objective of ISWAP? It's to create a caliphate. The wanna achieve it with all costs.
Right now, the North Eastern theatre is relatively quiet. But i do think ISWAP is preparing for something big.
In the coming weeks , ISWAP might strike a neighbouring nation, most likely Niger, unless they might surprise us in Cameroon. The will seize large cache of weapons. They might strike our FOBs and ambush our patrols, seizing weapons. This might be in line for the big operation coming in few months time. That's the capture of maiduguri. ISWAP might attack maiduguri from multiple axis in a nocturnal attack. Cutting off Maiduguri from damaturu by taking the Maiduguri - damaturu highway and taking out our posts there. It will be deadly. ISWAP want to hold the town. Even if its for 24hrs. They wanna show that we can still be hurt. It will be disastrous even if we can take them out. Their will be a lot of stragglers.
In other to avert this, we must commence offensive operations immediately.

A Full offensive should begin in Borno state.. Do we have military intelligence? I saw a video of soldiers showing dead BH with mobile phones in their pockets. Can we track this numbers to know who they call and what communication goes on?

Intel is very necessary

True. Do we have full intel? No. Can we get full intel? Yes. Do we want to have full intel? Maybe.
Terrorists have more intel than us right now in the theatre, alot of Borno citizens are on their payroll. We allowed it happened. We could shut down comms for months and run this military ops. In some cases, we know the enemy's position but we don't know his move. How would we know his next move when our very own large intelligence agencies have been politicized. I'll give it to DMI they are tering their best with also NA intelligence corp.
DSS supposed to be actively in the field, what about NIA? i haven't heard from them a long time now.
We lost the momentum when we politicized this war. Politicians used this war for to score cheap points in inter-party politics. Our intelligence, sincerely has failed. Those agencies have a lot of fifth columnists.

What the politicians are doing in partisanship doesn't concern the military, Military has a job to do, they should get on with it.
Nigeria isn't more partisan than the US, it doesn't make their military lose focus.

I do understand what you mean. The Military is supposed to be apolitical according to "true definitions". In our Nigerian context, we all know that the military is political. In fact, democracy has made the military look like a paramilitary organization and a political tool. We have loyalist of politicians in the high ranks of our military.
Globally, war itself is politics. The Nigerian context is only worse. The civilian intelligence agencies capabilities has deteriorated deeply. We must understand that this war isn't against the Nigerian military, its not against the Nigerian government. Its against the existence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and its people. If the civilians and public can contribute 60%, then the war is won.

Truly criminals ain't ghost.
But they result to a tactics that shoves you military tactics and might through the window, it's called the hide/seek that hit the opponent occasionally. Some people call it the guerrilla tactics, ask Americans during the Vietnam war it took months before they made contact with the enemy not forgetting the unforgiving forest conditions, bubby traps and so on. Read Collin Powell's books: a soldiers way & My American journey.
In our own condition we might not have bubby traps yet but we've started loosing numbers of soldiers to ambush etc.[b]

These ESN guys can easily reck harvoc and easily blend in to the civilian population going about doing there daily activities.
Thank God to the quick intervention of the NPF IRT which is really assisting in proving credible information about ESN hideouts to ground forces .
The enemy you're fighting is not that dumb to be in one location, they move and relocate in make shift camps. That's why it's not going to be an easy war.

On the 25th of January 2017, Yakubu Fanami, an SS1 student sacrificed his life by restraining a female suicide bomber from gaining access to a Mosque at Kaleri, Borno. He and the suicide bomber exploded. Were it not for his heroic act, it would have been a different story.

It common sense to know that if 80% support you then they are accomplish and must be treated as such. Every one is your enemy in that kind of situation thus making it easy for security agencies to easily pick their enemy .
During their run around I put two and two together and was about to gather Intel from video, picture, comment and tweet.
So that question do I know who ESN are is not a question.
Piece two and two together from the video then you will find some identifiable person of interest from there you can kick the whole show to a start

You are still validating my claim that the are weak and most of their operations are aimed at PRs. They are sacrificing manpower and resources to show that they can still hurt.
It is very possible for them to capture and hold Maiduguri for a few hours but the human and capital cost will be so great that they won't be able to capture any other town several months.
To capture a town as large as maiduguri, it will require thousands of men and for a town that has a ditch around it, the terrorists have very few entery points meaning they will be massed up in few locations ;easy pickings for airforce and in a town with airbase, the aircrafts will have room to expend ammunition, return to base to resupply and fly out again to kill more terrorists. If the terrorists eventually gets victory, it will be worse than a phyrric victory.

Even in the height of the insurgency, when the terrorists controlled more than 10 times the area they control today, they were unable to capture Maiduguri. The number of troops in the city alone is enough to deter any attacks on the city. The only thing they can do is what they've been doing. Hit and run attacks and launching mortars and rockets into the city and ambushing traffics leaving or entering the city.

True. My point here is that, it will be disastrous. There will be collateral damage. Alot of our civilians will lose their lives. We better avert this. This scenario would gain them more than cheap propaganda. It will be an international embarrassment
