I'm not encouraging exam malpractice but he needed help urgently....

This is the easy excuse for all people who do wrong. There's always an excuse.

To your friend, let him remain humble to talk about his weakness. Help will definitely come if he's willing to learn.

Good morning guys,

Please, help me to help a friend.

I have tried everything possible within my capacity to help this guy but to no avail.
My friend is 22 and currently in one of the federal polytechnic here in Nigeria. This guy can speak good english well but the problem is he can not read nor write, the only thing he can write down is his name and Reg. No.

Last year, before first semester exam. I noticed that this guy is always avoiding conversation that involves reading or studying. I never saw him read, not even once. We are neighbours and friends.

I just decided to take it upon myself to find out what was wrong as I know, he is a good person but hiding something. So I offered to be helping him with his assignments and handout summary to my amazement the guy find it hard to read what I smartly asked him to. He refused to admit that he can't read, probably he was a shame to admit it, so I let him be.

He, then finally opens up to me about him not been able to read and write. Of course, this was after first semesters exam and I had to perster him before he was able to tell me of his secret. How have you been writing the exam then? I asked, he said "I submit blank paper" when the result came out he had 6 COs (carry overs).

Again, I offered to help. I did all his assignments, encourage him to write something in all his test, He improved on his CA and others except for reading as I told him to at list write some thing down.even if it means coping from someone siting next to him without getting caught, I'm not encouraging exam malpractice but he needed help urgently.

Now here's my major challenge and concern, Since January this year, I have used Queen's Premier, used other English materials, vowel and consonant sound

The only thing he's been able to read are just few two letter words. Thought I was the problem, so I lied to a friend who happens to be a lecturer that the guy needs help, and that he's finding it hard to understand his books. The lecturer agreed to help but later told the guy not to come again as the guy is still not getting any thing.

Please, help.... the guy want to learn but I don't know what exactly could be the problem.

Inputs please, I anticipate your wise advice.
Thanks.

Basically the problem with our system. When I was in school I can tell you half my class could not define the course they were studying. I mean no joke. I was studying sociology then. Tell them to put it in any language they could find even ibibio. They would struggle. You then ask how is the country your problem when you are yet to sought yourself out or do the right thing from your end?. Even if there is God that bless you have a role to play in it. Likewise if there is a social system you have a role to play to benefit from it.

This generation youth can complain about no jobs but they never complain about qualifications. By qualifications I don't mean papers. I mean proper reasoning as a consequence of absorbing knowledge in total.

Did the problem just start ?
How did he gain admission initially?
How did he get his WASCE result?
How was he doing in Primary and Secondary school?
Many questions before we can know what happens and how to help him.
It could be spiritual any Way.
Which ever, nothing without solution but must be sincere to tell the truth

I dey fear people like una. Like someone basically needs help and you're stating all these. Don't you know some people need motivation to gain stature where they feel the need to help themselves. This guy has already done a good job by bringing him to come out of his shell and admit he needs help. That's a big development already. And I'm sure you read where he said the guy is a good guy, ofcourse that should have warranted him to want to help him. What should do is encourage him not fruststate his effort. We all need help. No man is an island. Peace.

If you're waiting for someone to motivate you before you start developing yourself, it shows how undeveloped your perception is.

You want to tell me that a 22 years old cargo doesn't know what he wants?

His mates are deep into acquiring cutting edge skills like machine learning, data mining and web development, yet the idiot doesn't even know how to read, or write.

His father must be very ashamed of him!

What has he been doing throughout primary and secondary school? How did he even gain admission into the university?

People like you are the reason Nigeria will remain stuck on the dark ages. You lots encourage mediocrity to an insane height.

Sometimes fear of failure is acting on him. I was once like that. I can read alone but when it come to crowd, I will be stammering. I was challenged by my core friend when he embarrassed me in public that I don't have anything upstairs due to my fear but then, a very young boy that is twice below my age and a young girl came to me and started helping me by involving me in public conversation. Emotional trauma can cause so many things. My advise:
Seat him down and ask him if he wants to learn. If he says yes, engage him with assignments to know his seriousness. I tell you the truth, such people are the once that gets job after graduation. They just need paper

The same and more questions I have also asked him and he said something about not knowing how he passed WAEC but as for JAMB, he did the computer base JAMB, picked any options he feels is right. then scored 145.

As for the admission, his family friend helped in working out the admission into the polytechnic.

You said he submits blank sheet for exams because he can't even read and wrire... Then, He doesnt even know how he passed WAEC...

@OP, please read up on dyslexia a little that might be his problem.

I doubt it's dyslexia. He just doesn't know it... People pick up speaking English from their environment, but once it comes to reading and writing, they are lost, because they didn't even learn when they were young and now believe they're too old to go back to learn.

Note: You don't need to know how to read and write before you can speak English

lambszy, nobody is telling you the truth here about your friend, in as much there is still room for improve on reading and writing skills. I would have advice your friend to drop out from school to focus on skill learning or trade business. I had a friend like that who drop out from school as a result of this same issue. the guy went into shoe making and he is making his money.
seriously I doubt if he can cope

This should be the guy's problem and unfortunately it can't be cured but can be treated. Please take him to a good hospital for diagnosis.....See this

Dyslexia signs in teens and adults are similar to those in children. Some common dyslexia signs and symptoms in teens and adults include:
* Difficulty reading, including reading aloud
* Slow and labor-intensive reading and writing
* Problems spelling
* Avoiding activities that involve reading
* Mispronouncing names or words, or
problems retrieving words
* Trouble understanding jokes or expressions that have a meaning not easily understood from the specific words (idioms), such as "piece of cake" meaning "easy"
* Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
* Difficulty summarizing a story
* Trouble learning a foreign language
* Difficulty memorizing
* Difficulty doing math problems

BTW, let us all rise and applaud the OP. You are a good man and I must say your type is rare......... I give you your flowers while still here Niggo

Thanks.

Let him start with phonics sound first, you will thank me later

OlayemiAshraf:
He might have "reading disorder "

@Iambszy, this might be one of the reasons. Dyslexia is another you should consider. He needs a special teaching method. He might be visually impaired too- not really seeing what he's being asked to read. I wish I can help him.

It really breaks my heart to see a young man not being able to read.

I'll tell you what happened. He grew up in the village, that's what happened. All those village schools just promote students through the classes, even write answers on the boards for them to copy and pass junior and senior waec. Then for jamb, special centres come to the rescue. That is what happened.
Now, there's probably nothing wrong with him, medically. He is just too old to start learning languages. Just as you might find it difficult to learn Dutch at this your old age. If shame will let him, he should postpone getting a tertiary degree and go for extramural reading lessons in some sort of adult education centre, that will have that feel of inclusivity for people like him.
