Basically the problem with our system. When I was in school I can tell you half my class could not define the course they were studying. I mean no joke. I was studying sociology then. Tell them to put it in any language they could find even ibibio. They would struggle. You then ask how is the country your problem when you are yet to sought yourself out or do the right thing from your end?. Even if there is God that bless you have a role to play in it. Likewise if there is a social system you have a role to play to benefit from it.

This generation youth can complain about no jobs but they never complain about qualifications. By qualifications I don't mean papers. I mean proper reasoning as a consequence of absorbing knowledge in total.
Shut the hell up bruh
How many of those people are senators,or politician children? Or you think if they had gone to a proper school, they will have such problems? Or if they have gone to UK to study like biharis children, they will be having such problems? The answer is NO
Most of them are products of a failed public school system, a failed government, here in Canada, the starndard of their public kindergarten school is far ahead of many expensive private schools in Lekki. Or you think, after owing teachers for 1year, they will have time for the students? Or is it children sitting under tree would be able to reason? You really need to use part of your senses

As much as I find it hard to believe this story, let me drop my one kobo opinion based on d fact that there are actually ppl at such age with such problems, weather they are in d university or not. I have come to understand that d learning process is a thing that is directly proportional to age. He has missed the basics he ought to have gotten as a toddler, things he needed to have learnt by repeatition, which is what is used at primary level to learn basic things, but at this age, maturity and level of IQ coupled with impatience will make it impossible to learn to read and write. This is why it is usually very easy for litle children to learn languages very fast but quite tedious for a grown man to do same easily. My advice will be for him to enroll with tutors that are specialists in teaching how to read and write for his age cos there are lots of techniques and psychology applied to such cases that we may not understand

Maybe he has ASD, My daughter was confirmed to be on the AUTISM spectrum. She can say some words but cannot read or write. sometimes, when she says the words, she does not even know what they mean. its some form of Echolalia but can only communicate via sign language .

Good morning guys,

Please, help me to help a friend.

I have tried everything possible within my capacity to help this guy but to no avail.
My friend is 22 and currently in one of the federal polytechnic here in Nigeria. This guy can speak good english well but the problem is he can not read nor write, the only thing he can write down is his name and Reg. No.

Last year, before first semester exam. I noticed that this guy is always avoiding conversation that involves reading or studying. I never saw him read, not even once. We are neighbours and friends.

I just decided to take it upon myself to find out what was wrong as I know, he is a good person but hiding something. So I offered to be helping him with his assignments and handout summary to my amazement the guy find it hard to read what I smartly asked him to. He refused to admit that he can't read, probably he was a shame to admit it, so I let him be.

He, then finally opens up to me about him not been able to read and write. Of course, this was after first semesters exam and I had to perster him before he was able to tell me of his secret. How have you been writing the exam then? I asked, he said "I submit blank paper" when the result came out he had 6 COs (carry overs).

Again, I offered to help. I did all his assignments, encourage him to write something in all his test, He improved on his CA and others except for reading as I told him to at list write some thing down.even if it means coping from someone siting next to him without getting caught, I'm not encouraging exam malpractice but he needed help urgently.

Now here's my major challenge and concern, Since January this year, I have used Queen's Premier, used other English materials, vowel and consonant sound

The only thing he's been able to read are just few two letter words. Thought I was the problem, so I lied to a friend who happens to be a lecturer that the guy needs help, and that he's finding it hard to understand his books. The lecturer agreed to help but later told the guy not to come again as the guy is still not getting any thing.

Please, help.... the guy want to learn but I don't know what exactly could be the problem.

Inputs please, I anticipate your wise advice.
Thanks.

Probably dyslexia... unfortunately in Africa we never diagnose these things; we just settle for calling the child an 'olodo'.

Download a nursery audio reading app for him,let him make use of earpiece to listen to them so as they're pronouncing words,he will be following. Let him keep replaying each word until he captures that

He needed help but pride, not shame, prevented him from seeking help. There are many in the US and other places in the same both. Malcolm X, that famous black American, in his article, Homemade Education, said he knew a lot of blacks ,who spoke very well, but couldn't write a letter. He too was one of them. His jail term served him a lifetime opportunity. He went to the warder, who allowed him to use the prison's library. He took a dictionary and would start studying, from alphabet A.He would learn all the words till he got to Z. That was how he educated himself in prison.
Your friend has got no excuses. He can bewail his lost time, but it's not too late. He can start now, through personal study. Nobody would help him. To get a good...a very good grasp of English, I dedicated like three decades to studying it. Even, after having a first degree in it, I still study it everyday. Now, without any sense of self-assuredness or smugness, I can say with certitude that I've mastered it. My Aussie friend once told me that my English was much better than hers. That was from a native speaker of the English language.

Can he read and write in his native language?

Teach him more on the vowel and consonant sounds

Teach him the typical way once he gets the logic behind the sound of every alphabet he will catch up

, perhaps he should dropout and go hire a private teacher to teach him, how did he even make it out of secondary school?

Public school is still school. Standard is another discussion. All countries have education relative to their societies. In America many still complain about the poor state of public schools. You are not honest comparing schools of first world to that of third. I was hoping you compare public schools of Canada to private schools in Canada. Again schools functions in relations to society. There are people who came out of Nigeria schools and are doing well over the world. They schooled in uni port , Calabar, uniben, lasu, name it. They did well and excelled, even bettered their rivals in foreign institution. Surprise you ignored this. . This are all product of institution.our so called failed institutions.

It's a shame many of you can't see yourself. All you see is the society that does not exist. There are books in the most shambolic schools if you want to read you will. I did my best to read. So did many others. You can blame goverment and you won't be wrong. But the bulk of blame should be reserved for yourselves.

I think first of the individuals not societies. There are many engineers who school in Nigeria and are doing well. Learn to learn first. The schools are very ok. Take advantage of it.

The same and more questions I have also asked him and he said something about not knowing how he passed WAEC but as for JAMB, he did the computer base JAMB, picked any options he feels is right. then scored 145.

As for the admission, his family friend helped in working out the admission into the polytechnic.

Apparently a medical condition - Dyslexia. Unfortunately, Nigeria donr have institutions with facilities for such persons. In saner climes, they have special transcribing equipments as learning aids for such people. But Naija Minister's would rather divert provisions made for such and attract curses upon curses upon themselves and their generations

Your friend has dyslexia. Dyslexia a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.

He needs a specialized education programme, and only a trained professional can provide that.

Aisha Yesufu, the Nigerian political and human rights activists, was worried when she realized her then 15-year-old son couldn't read. She enrolled him in some of the best schools in Nigeria, but there was no tangible improvement in the boy's reading abilities. She had to fly him to the UK. It was there that they discovered that he was dyslexic. Now the boy can actually read and write. Thank God for the white man. They make an effort to know why certain things happen and how to fix them.

I don't think we have people who specialize in dyslexia in Nigeria. Even if there are, theyll be in bigger cities like Lagos and Abuja and your friend might not be able to afford their services.

90% of Nigerian teachers do not know about dyslexia

An expert, Dr Adrienne Tikolo has expressed concern over the low awareness of dyslexia among Nigerians, pointing out that about 90 percent of teachers do not know about the disorder, which makes it difficult for children to read and spell.

With a prevalence rate of 20 per cent of any population dyslexic, Tikolo said the only cure is an early intervention.“As it stands now, we worry about children that are out of school, but there are children who are in school but are not learning anything because they are not being taught the way they should. Dyslectic children have good verbal ability but are prone to fail exams and unable to write. It is specific to reading, thinking, writing and spelling. It is also hereditary, most children inherited the condition from one of their parents, which may have developed due to poor teaching, socio-economic status or the environment you live in. When a child is not learning in school, it is most likely to be dyslexia but the teachers are not aware of this; hence, they cannot offer help to the children. The only cure is early intervention, when the condition is detected early enough, we can help programme the brain and help the child learn well.”

He needs to listen and watch more YouTube English Language training videos. You can search for those that will enable him read along and also get a notebook with which he can also be writing down what is being taught in the videos. That way he practices both reading comprehension and writing.

Why I asked if he was a born again is because jokes apart, they rarely want to read or study anything other than the Bible or listen to language training videos but would rather spend hours listening to their pastors and read the Bible. Not that it's not good but most times these pastors don't use the correct tenses while preaching and you latch on it. Then again the Bible (aside from the New English Version) is written in old English format.

Your friend needs to dedicate more time to this and trust me he will be better off within the shortest possible time. All the best and God bless you for assisting him.

hi, the bible is written in early modern English. Old English is almost a different language entirely from what we have now and a lot of alphabets no longer exists.
