Nothing wrong with Physics
These days a first degree is rarely enough for those seeking to become employees

There is nothing stopping you taking a professional course afterwards

e.g ICAN, CFA etc or some IT related programme
MBA and so on

It is not. To get the most out of the course, major in Physics with electronics or Geo-physics in your final year. These are highly sort after specialties and students that study these always stand out from the regular Elect-elect engineering and Geology.

Nothing is useless. it is just that some courses have more prospects than others.

Most of the notable Inventors and scientists are all physicist, this is a very good discipline and I will encourage your to continue and soar high in your choice of course, I know you don't see job adverts with a physic degree, but that's because you've been looking at the wrong place.

Most adverts on programming and coding, go with a physics degree and not only computer science degree as it where.

N.B: As a Physicist it is expedient and sacrosanct that you know programming, coding, Big Data, Data Analysis or something more technical and complex. Great Physicist, I'll see you at the top. wink

Ok, I think the question he's trying to ask is 'is a Physics degree of any use in this country Nigeria" For developed countries the answer would have been a confident YES, however, Nigeria's own always has question mark

No course is useless. Medicine and surgery is not greater than Physics, neither is any Engineering course greater than Physics. The only thing that makes the course useless is if the person that studied the Physics is himself useless. shocked shocked

My brother it's Nigeria that's making it look as if any course you read in school it's useless... Like me now I read forestry and wildlife management but I'm running a small business just to exist bro . That's the sad reality we found ourselves as Nigerians in the midst of plenty. So help us God.

@the emboldened.
Oga, that's a big LIE

Programming opportunities ask for Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, and other related courses. I hardly see Physics.

Physics is rarely applied in Nigeria because people who made a mark in that space were mostly inventors.

Doghorp, you should go ahead with physics if you want to be a teacher (lecturers) or work in some engineering fields.

IMO, the best bet is to change your course and swift to Information Technology, Computer Science or Electronics Engineering.

You made a good observation about Physicists not having openings in Nigeria. Nigerians don't invent; we only deploy and use. That's probably why many Physicists rarely get a related job here.

Is there any course that has not been rendered useless in this country?
none! in nigeria any course you study is useless without connection to get a good job.even medicine.if you study physics in nigeria.it is most certain that you would end up as a teacher in a private school with a meagre salary.

That's one of the best courses. Physics is the basis of engineering and gives you a very good footing to understand any form of engineering if you want to.

Forget the advice of going for civil engineering. The best thing you would do for yourself right now is to start learning code. Learn programming and combine it with your physics degree and the sky is the limit.
Tell op the truth tongue
It used to be and will always be in developed countries but right here in our very beloved country, studying physics as a course is as useless as Saka's yesterday penalty kick was to his career shocked

No it's not.

During your holidays try and learn Java programming or Python and a whole new world will open up for you to apply your Physics knowledge.

Every course is useless in Nigeria but some courses are more useless than others honestly. I rate physics above all engineering degrees. All op needs to know is get into IT and combine it with the degree.

Not entirely useless but you need to do extra work to get yourself employable. It would be very difficult to get employed directly based on the Physics degree qualification.

Op please do not pay attention to those negative comments expecially the one that asking you to go and take jamb and start all over again.the gospel truth is,in Nigeria, what you studied in school doesn't really matter anymore these days, but, your background will help you alot to transition to other lucrative professions incase you want to.for example, a physicist can easily transit to computer scientist, programmer, computer engr, electrical and electronics, geophysics and lots more.just concentrate in your studies, know what you are doing and develop passion in other related professions.
