The Bauchi Government says it has begun a one-week headcount of commercial sex workers operating in the state.

Permanent Commissioner, Bauchi State Hisbah Command, Aminu Balarabe, stated this at the inauguration of the enumeration exercise of the sex workers, on Wednesday in Bauchi.

Balarabe said the exercise was designed to support the sex workers with economic empowerment to enable them to quit prostitution, learn trades and become self-reliant.

He said that the state government would also assist the identified sex workers who are willing to be reunited with their families, adding that the exercise is not meant to witch-hunt or discriminate against them.

The commissioner said that the state government had initiated the exercise after careful deliberations and considerations of the plight of the sex workers.

The exercise, he said, would enable the state government to properly plan and determine the financial and moral commitments to rehabilitate the sex workers.

“The state government decided to provide them with the necessary empowerment skills and seed capital to enable them to quit the immoral attitude of prostitution.

“Some of them who are not indigenes of the state will be reunited with their parents if they so wish. The state government will contact their state governments for proper handing over of those affected,” he said.

“Biodata forms will be distributed to the sex workers to provide their personal information such as state of origin and the reason why they ventured into prostitution.

“They are also required to indicate the type of trade or occupation of their choice. The state will also sponsor the marriage of those willing to marry or remarry.

“We are fully committed to implementing the Sharia law as provided in our legal code but with full consideration of fundamental human rights of every citizen,” he added.

In his remarks, a community leader in Bayangari area of Bauchi, Malam Yakubu Bakawu, urged the Hisbah Board not to relocate the residents of the area.

Also speaking, Chairman, Nigeria Hotels Association in the state, Mr. Patrick Anyawu, said that there were 41 brothels operating in Bayangari community.

Anyawu lauded the sex workers empowerment scheme, adding that the gesture would eradicate poverty, reduce crimes and check immoral behaviours in the society.

He also pledged support of the residents of the area towards the facilitation of smooth conduct of the exercise.

Miss Hafsat Aliyu, who spoke on behalf of the sex workers, urged the state government to fulfill its promise and ensure effective empowerment of the affected sex workers.

Hafsat expressed her desire to quit prostitution and engage in meaningful activities to contribute to social and economic development of the state.

Much as I commend this unprecedented move, there's a caveat here. The personnel spearheading this gesture must question and psychoanalyse those sex workers to find out why they do what they do.

There are ladies who who claim to be prostitutes because they need to survive but always wish that someone would rescue them from that ignoble profession. Those should be the target here.

However, some sex workers are like Yahoo boys, no amount of financial support can change them because they will always argue that the so-called salary they earn after working for 30 days is what one alhaji pays for satisfying him for one night. Those ones are completely irredeemable.

A lot of countries register their prostitute populations..for those of you who think that what Bauchi is doing is weird.

As Wikipedia puts it

.
In some countries, (or administrative subdivisions within a country), prostitution is legal and regulated. In these jurisdictions, there is a specific law, which explicitly allows the practice of prostitution if certain conditions are met (as opposed to places where prostitution is legal only because there is no law to prohibit it).

In countries where prostitution is regulated, the prostitutes may be registered, they may be hired by a brothel, they may organize trade unions, they may be covered by workers' protection laws, their proceeds may be taxable, they may be required to undergo regular health checks, etc. The degree of regulation, however, varies very much by jurisdiction.

Here, Bauchi is registering prostitutes for the purpose of welfare and rehabilitation.
