What I'd have agreed with more is that, most times, most don't delve into other things while in school. No involvement in extracurriculars activities to build themselves unlike 2.1 guys and below. Thus, at the end of their program, while others have networked while in school, built relationships to help them move up, they can be lagging behind in that aspect.

Why will you pass such a hash judgement on someone you don't know. That there were crammers in your class does not make every first class graduate a crammer.
You know what it takes to graduate with a first class in a purely analytical field like Mathematics? We are not talking about courses one has to read notes and pass exams, no.
I remember writing open exams in school, where you were allowed to use as many texts books, notebooks, smartphones as possible. Funny enough, those were the exams students failed most. Cramming giving one a first class in such field? it's difficult.
You also talked about solving life problem, good. What kind of life problems do you want him to? Did he failed to design mathematical models at his level, presented to him. Don't forget he had lectures who were Ph.D and professors in mathematics, back then in school. Still understand that amongst these lectures, there were first class, how do you want this fresh graduate to perform miracles even his first class professors lectures have not performed.

About the being a season programmer you talked about, did it occurred to you that the young man in question may not even have a smartphone? That he went back to farming in his village tells you the guy may lack exposure and privillage to realize his potentials. It's not everyone that is privillage.
