This is simple common sense; if he who marries a divorce woman commits adultery, it means the divorcee is expected to remain single forever as long as her ex husband lives . Likewise , the man is expected not to remarry as long a his ex wife is alive .

The reason is that in God's eyes they are still one despite that they are separated
