richmanrichard:It depends on the amount of time you put into learning . I learnt html and css for 4 months (I started April this year) but it took longer time because I'm currently a student, so i don't have enough time to learn programming. But if you have enough time, html and css will take you about 2 to 3 months. As for javascript....hmmm....just know it will take you at least 6 months |

I'm planning now to do a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and thereafter I'll do MSc Computer Science at Unilag during this time I'll be learning hard-core programming, I'm 30. I hope it's a good plan. |

CSTRR:Python and Java are platform independent. You don't need to keep rewriting the codes. C++ is popular for games and business apps. So learning and becoming an expert in these 3 gives me a solid chance of being a programmer in demand. |

Gerrard59:Till the 17th century, most parts of the developed world were plagued with slavery and slave trade, the most barbaric forms of racism, cannibalism, and the likes. It didn't get worse. Things have changed. Civilization has set in. Terrorism is terrorism. Everything you have said is all tied to terrorism and insecurity. For real, every sensible Nigerian is concerned about this. But overcoming this is not impossible as you seem to suggest. USA, France, Bangladesh, Turkey, etc. have managed to curtail it in the past. Nigeria will too! Where are you running to BTW? Many Africans are low-key attacked, mistreated, and killed in Europe and the USA. Racism and gangsterism is no joke in many European countries. |

That is true op, some of my guys with Andela work remote with some American firms but ultimately leaving Nigeria should be everyone's priority as a programmer. If one gets past the live coding test, then one is 60% sure of nailing the job if he/she puts in more efforts. Working as an expatriate can be so sweet, hopefully our button clicks. |

Angelawhite:If you leave Naija the way you are right now, you will miss many things and end up unfulfilled. Why? Cos you are too focused on leaving without even trying to look at what is right at your nose. Is it just one post of mine you read and you concluded? Learn to be attentive. Guy, I want you leave. I will help you leave if I can. You are better off abroad as a programmer. Yes, I know. Even OP knows I am not against anyone leaving. But I have gone there. I know what is there. I know there are opportunities there. Esp the US. That is a land of opportunities. However, I said that you all do not need to bad mouth Naija finally. Always put back here. Lift others and also keep investing in good people here. Keep your minds opened to how to help. You can still do startups in naija. You all keep talking about Flutterwave, bla bla bla and other fintechs. But I made my research and I know some of those guys are into shady deals. The only thing they always want to do is investments, moving money, etc. They use Fintech as cover ups. Most of you guys know these things. Let's not keep blind eyes towards many things going on. Some started well, but cannot resist the temptation of politicians approaching them to launder money for them. This is why CBN is clamping almost everything down. But CBN is also opening opportunities and alternatives too. CBN is evil itself...dont get wrong. But when they close them down, they always shout like they always do. But when you investigate deeper, you see they are useless Fintechs. Buhari is bad. Yes, he is. Buhari is terrible...yes he is. But you can move money at CBN rates now easily for many things. You can pay your tuition now easily. Guy, in my days, if your papa was not MKO (the olden days of Dangote), you are screwed esp if you are in Europe cos there was no way to send out money. Think about that. Your parents or even you can still work and save. And then find schools and pay from here at CBN rates. In my days, you would first find those agents in the UK who would charge more than black market rates, then, moved the cash from the UK again to the destination. You end up paying like 40% more of the amount you should pay. At times, can be up to 100% more. So, we stopped requesting cash from home. We hustled. The only work in those days were dish washing, toilet stuff, snow removal from the streets, etc. Go and read the story of Gani Faweyinmi SAN. His first son also died I think past week. That's the senior of Femi Falana (Falz the bad guy's dad) who is still fighting. You all dont know anything at all. We worked hard. And we made it. And some of us are better today. We are seeing opportunities here again, and we are telling you that fine...go like we went. But guys, do not sleep over there like the useless ones of our days. Get another citizenship or residence, but never forget Naija. The ones who forgot naija are lamenting today. Their children cannot even visit Naija cos they are afraid when their papa and mama cannot even come themselves. Think about home. When you are more matured is when you will realise these things I am telling you. You are still under 30 and it's why you talk like this. In our days, we would lined up at the US embassy. They sacked us, boys would return. No retreat, no surrender. We would put into Germany, UK, US, etc. Mainwhile there weren't private universities. For where? All universities scattered. Aluta everywhere. You are complaining of strike. Lol. Go and ask what OAU did to many. Let me tell you, it was this man who helped our Institution through one guy, and we dont talk about him. I will summarize. Some of our mates got jobs in oil companies cos that was booming them. During Buhari, IBB to Abacha era (1983 to 1999) everywhere scattered. See..Buhari came to power in 1983, and IBB sacked him in 1985. IBB destroyed everything. I think in 90, Gideon Okar came on board but his coup was not successful. In fact, IBB was captured. See that coup was when they scattered IBB's leg that had been corrected. He had had surgery then before he came to power( after world war) cos a bullet went in. But Okar scattered that leg again. Since then, IBB has been battling that leg. Read this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gideon_Orkar That was when reality dawned on IBB that he must step aside. He conducted election and MKO the richest man then contested too. Mind you, Babangida had been conducting useless elections deceiving us that he wanted to hand over. But after the Okar coup, he meant it. Unknowing to him, Lt Gen Abacha the defence minister who was the guy who saved him when Okar had captured him had the ambition to rule. You can watch IBB's recent interview where he said the forces that canceled 92 election were too much for him. The real force was general Sanni Abacha. Go and read about him. I dont know why they dont teach you history again. IBB canceled the election, and put an interim govt there. Mainwhile nemesis caught MKO too cos he was always the man sponsoring military coups so that the boys can continue giving him monopoly over others. Yes. That's it. Abacha was brutal. He was just killing anyone who went against him - Abraham Adesanya, Ken Saro Wiwa, Kudirat Abiola. Who born you well to stay? As tough as Wole Soyinka is, he ran away. The same Wole who face Gen Gowon ran away from Nigeria through Cotonou. Jagaban took off. Who born you to stay? Dele Momodu took off. Who didnt run? Students. Sowore and Mayegun, and the rest on the battle ground. You kids do not know anything. You will be insulting us. Mainwhile, your papa's were cowards. Here is my point. Students rose. First, it was Mayegun and them Sowore after him as student president is of UNILAG. one guy called AFRIKA died in OAU. it pained us all. Sowore mentioned him and remembered him recently. You all dont know how far at all. Wetin you don see? When Abacha was there...there is his vice - Lt Dipo Diya. He is called the crying general. Who will see death and not cry? Anyway, go read about him. But what I want to bring out is this. When he was there, he was a friend to the newly elected VC of UNILAG - Prof Jelili Omotola. We called him Omo-T. He found favor with the govt via Diya and stylishly got permissions to start internal privatization so that UNILAG didnt depend from allocations from govt. Any small thing then, lecturers have striked. No classes. 2 years, 3 years...no school. Wetin concern Abacha when he didnt go tonschool himself? An illiterate general. So, UNILAG pure water, bread, etc came out. They started making money. It was Omo-T who first started charging for parking spaces for cars just to generate funds. He also renovated halls for parties every Sat. Also, he got a special electric sub station for UNILAG that electricity was constant again. All of a sudden, UNILAG became the champ ooo. Lecturers were paid from internal funds generated. Bonuses for all workers. Even non academic staff members started flourishing. UNiLAG lecturers started playing overseas games going on Sabbaticals to teach and would return. How? The university changed the game. This year a prof would lecture the following, he would be on one year Sabbatical teaching abroad. And them would return again. This template all other schools followed. And this internal privatization got birth to private universities you all have today. You graduated in 4 years and you are complaining. I pity you all. If we had given up on Nigeria, you all will not have what you have today. No retreat, No surrender. We would match to Alausa and ask the military govt then. Buba Marwa saw hell. Go and ask him. Dem no born am well to not pay attention to students. We took over Nigeria...but Abacha brutal mehn! But you papas and mamas would even be telling us to not fight. Lazy cowards. The same you are doing today. Fight for your nation..cowards!!!You are bragging of doing things by yourself. Do you have an idea the golden days pre GSM era? The GSM tech is getting obsolete now. Lol. Go and ask how NITEL was so nastier tha NEPA. I wrote about it one time. Wetin na. Ha! NITEL? They even made booths for us to make calls. 3 hours you are still on the line waiting I the sun. The connecting wires are nasty around the streets. If we didnt fight, Abacha would be there with the military. OBJ wouldn't have returned to give you GSM, mobile and internet tech. You should be grateful for this. Your parents are cowards. They cannot face their mates oppressing them. We students did their jobs. Look at them na. They dont have pension again ... no one student to fight for them when they cannot fight for themselves but even discouraged us. Any small shakara, they exposed us and gave us over to the military. Very timid sef of people. But now, your destiny is in your hands. You have many opportunities. And I am saying that you guys can help Naija. Please! Do not abandon Naija is the cry. If we abandoned Naija, you guys will still not have stuff you have now. We kept pushing it during our days. We would face IBB in those days. We would face bullets. I just keep looking at many of you abusing Sowore. That Sowore you saw was injected deadly lead in those days. He was sick for so long and that was how he went out of Naija to the US to treat himself and returned with Saharah Reporter. If you look at Sowore well, he aged somehow. That is the result of the lead injected into him. Yet, he is still fighting. There are betrayal like Dino. That Dino is as stubborn as he was in those days. He would not accept. Always in the front. But how Dino changed to what he is today, we that really know him well cannot say. You people are young. Anyway, na you all sabi. I just know that you will all regret it like those ones who abandoned Nigeria. They are regretting it today. I talk to many of them and they keep saying if they had known. Nigeria cannot be like this if many of them put in back their effort and fight these Nigerian Talibans. The likes of IBB, Buhari, OBJ, Abdusalammi, Danjuma, Buba Marwa, and all ex military men are Nigerian Talibans. And they are still ruling. These people have nothing for us. And we need to kick them out. Well, if you leave, some will stay. Some will leave and return and still fight. The joke is on you. You will regret it later. So leave...but dont forget Naija. And let us be positive. Simple.. If you mention me again...I will not reply you. But I know that your likes just make mouth. If we check you out, we will see that you have no play yet. Just like the other one called Karleb or so...always talking like an expert. Mainwhile, he is just starting. No much experience and always talking here like he knows everything. The joke is on us all if Nigeria fails. Dont make me write the history of Nigeria here again. What the heck do you know? You will end up miserable abroad if you dont take care. |

tensazangetsu20:Calm down bro. We have all been here. First of all, contrary to what people say, computer programming is not for everyone. Not everyone can live the lifestyle of a computer programmer. Secondly, the country is messed up but not everything is the government fault. Most Nigerians should share the blame equally with the government. Nigerians are the ones promoting this stuffs. .....Once upon a time, many international payment gateways allow Nigerians to make transactions. What happened, Nigerians started their fraudulent activities as usual leading to Nigeria being blacklisted from the these platform. Now is it the government that did this? No, it is the so-called Nigerians. I'm not saying the government should be exempted from the blame. Government in Nigeria since when I was born till now has been a total FAILURE. THEY ARE DRIVING NIGERIA IN REVERSE GEAR. My advice to computer programmers in Nigeria 1. Make sure you get work before before traveling abroad. You can be in Nigeria and search for tech related work abroad. 2. Another way is to entrol for an educative program abroad if you have the money. While schooling you can also showcase your skills and search for work. 3. Stay and help Nigeria overcome: This can be a sucide mission but sometimes the answer isn't always running away. The common misconception about computer programming is that it is all about coding. The truth is computer programming is all about problem solving. So what, if the world shuts us out. Who says we can not make it on our own. We just need to find a balance.. away to make money while heping people to also achieve their goals. Africa is the second largest continent in the world...think programmers...think. |

I was going to pick your comment apart, but you made a lot of valid points. That said, generally speaking, you would have to be a fool to actually leave the shores of Africa as coder. Here's why: - Coders can be based anywhere, and continental immigration has less bureaucracy. Why waste money and effort on the immigration process? - The average COL for an African city is modest. Why turn down living among your own people in a good city while earning a western salary, or better yet, passively earning from a project you did years ago? - There are plenty of African nations with little drama and good infrastructure. Why go to some Asian or eastern European toilet, when you have all the resources you need at home? The only good reason to go abroad is for the specific experience and training that you get working in-house at a large multinational. But 2-4 years is plenty of time to do it. After that, you're just making them rich, getting crumbs, and living an undesirable lifestyle. Contracting as well as doing your own projects would be infinitely better. And the money you earn will have you living like royalty in Africa. I'm just trying to imagine why someone would rather be in Poland or Vietnam working long hours and stressing about bills while dealing with racism instead of: working when they want to work, collecting passive income, living in a large luxury condo, taking care of family financially, spending most of their time with family or traveling, saving a lot of money, investing, and more. The only exception would be a C-suite job with a very high salary. Other than that, what makes it worth it? |
