As at the start of last season your midfield and attack were Europa level but your defense was just above relegation level. The board has made acquisitions in defense and it remains to be seen how well they will settle in.

Your attacking players were good enough to play well and get better results if you didn't have a manager who decided he had to be defensive minded in order to protect your fragile defense. I know cos we have gone through the same issue at United.

Outside Tierney nobody in the Top 4 is touching any of your relegation level defenders like Kolasinac, Chambers, Holding.

I would pick Martinelli, Saka, ESW, Auba, Partey, Odegard for my team before any of those guys in that back (apart from the excellent Tierney of course). They are just not good enough.

Whether the midfield or attack is helping them is immaterial IMO cos they are not good enough to be defenders at a club like Arsenal. The first question to ask is " in a vacuum is this player good enough to represent the club". Ask that question about Kolasinac, Chambers, Holding.
Mari, Gabriel, White will have the chance to show their quality this season.

The board decided that the worst players in the club were the defenders and spent accordingly. It would not have been reasonable to spend more money on a 6/10 attack and midfield in order to protect a 3/10 defense. Better to just improve the defense and make it 6/10 too.

Now where i would agree with you is that with the recent defensive acquisitions it is high time the board started looking at the midfield and attack, in particular replacing people like the ageing Auba, Laca, and the departed Willian.
And someone has to go to Ghana to confirm Partey's birth certificate.
cheesy

At the emboldened if they faced the likes of holding, kolasinac and chambers would turn world class defenders cause those attackers are toothless (not deadly enough for opposition defenders to panic)...

I thought you always said we needed more attackers, how come you support him 100%? I may be wrong on the though.
Not just more attackers, but quality attackers. Only Saka looks OkAY( not world class yet IMO) others appear average and too weak, lazy and boring.
My opinion has always been a very strong attack can take you far up. But generally, Arsenal do not have such exciting players.

Let me drop my 2 cent here...

I think the Arsenal board were on point with the purchase of Gabriel last season but not White and Ramsdale or the other defenders they've bought.

I think what Arsenal needs now is to get back into the UCL proper and a good attack and midfield can deliver that but to win trophies which should be a long term goal for Arsenal at the moment, they will need to improve on their defense...

With a good attack and midfield, you can win games against the weaker teams and possibly snatch a point or a win against the big guns and that should be enough to guarantee a top 4 finish for a couple of seasons before the issues surrounding the defense is fully addressed.

I don't think Saka, ESR, Martinelli, Lokonga, Nketiah and the likes should be the go-to men for a team like Arsenal as they are way too young to shoulder such heavy responsibilities...After the signing of Gabriel, more funds should have been channeled to improve the attack and midfield whilst they paper over the cracks in defense with bargain buys.

Lastly, one of Auba or Lacazette should have been or rather should be moved on for a younger and more prolific forward...
100% on point.
An ambitious club thinking in the right direction would have splahed everything on Madison, Swap in Coutinho and bring in Draxler for free. I believe these are men who can take Arsenal further up.

I know Arsenal won't spend, so I came down to a realistic level.
Arsenal won't get Halland, Bernado and Vinicious, but Arsenal can get those I mentioned to START with or patch things up till they can get funds through proceeds from European competition.
IMO, Maddison,Countinho and Draxler has a higher chance of taking Arsenal back to Europa at the end of the season than this present attack.

So if you are made Arsenal's TD, you will make Haaland, Bernardo, Vinicious, and probably Lukaku, Mbappe etc to sign for us?

grin grin grin

Bros wake up, you're still dreaming.

On a more serious note, forget it. It's a general management principle to first strengthen defense before attack. Especially when you have fairly above average attackers. It's cheaper, easier, more sensible, more long term, and more achievable. After that, focus can then be given to attack.

That's exactly what the club is doing, and they are on the right path. Next season with Lacazette and say Nketiah off, the club can then bring in two or three high profile attackers. Hopefully then, we would be in a good position to negotiate and attract them.

I've shared my opinion on this sometimes ago but why are you people overlooking the midfield? If our midfield is good, other departments will improve. Look at the way Lukaku was using our defence to catch cruise the other time, why couldn't he did the same against Liverpool? It was because their midfield was good. The money wasted on Ramsdale and White should have been used to get midfielders with Ryan and Saliba getting the nod but the mumu board no sabi economics. On a lighter note, I think Wenger was able to run this club because he is an economist. grin

I've always said we need to improve our midfield and attack, not just attack. No matter how we wanna look at this window, it's a failure.

Except Pepe improves drastically, we don't have anyone aside Auba that can give us 15+ league goals.

Except Odegaard and/or ESR add goals to their games, we don't have any midfielders that can give us 10+ league goals.

The only defender that always look like scoring is Gabriel (excluding White and Tomi who are new signings).

If you add all these things together and you still feel we try for this transfer window, then lemme just say sorry for us cheesy

Just read yesterday that Brighton was open to Nketiah and cash, but arsenal was insistent on only cash which made us part with £50m.

Also read that Ryan was open to staying with position of a back up role cos his a lifelong arsenal fan, but arsenal decided otherwise.

And yet this club dey write us epistles about how we should be patient cos they're assembling all the youth players in the world to come play for us. They should go read history how fab, nasri and van Persie to name a few jumped ship to better club immediately better club came calling.

Spy, if you no see the hypocrisy from this board esp the 3rd paragraph, then see it now cos we will soon become former big 6 club soon.

Actually, the backup players were highly needed. The main grouse most of us are angry here is really that £80m wasted on both ramsdale and White and not selling xhaka instead giving him improved contracts. Those 3 decisions is what is indirectly affecting arsenal esp as crucial area of the pitch are left unattended to

Aside that, everything you wrote up there is facts 100%

Even the Odegaard deal sef get as e be. I'd rather a more experienced CAM for 40m...

Xhaka renewal was just a daft move, should have been sold to Roma for even 15m...Sometimes you just have to cut your loses...

Exactly what many of us are saying here about the odegaard deal. Odegaard will just blend in like other average midfielder for us(just slightly better than the rest). We needed a CAM that will give huge impact to us and raise the standard of those around him not just blending in.

As for xhaka, the less said about that the better. Reason why anything wey the board dey talk I dey take am with pinch of salt cos dem never ready and serious yet

We didn't neglect the midfield in fact if you follow our arguments u will know before the attack must click they must be strong connection between the midfielders and the attackers.

That's why we opposed the view of defence first before the attack and sighted example when both the midfielders and attackers do their job respectively defenders will flex at the back and we cited Arsenal of invincible, Man city, Barcelona, Bayern, Liverpool, PSG and Leicester of 2016 those aforementioned got deadly attack (midfield and attack connected) but lack defence.

Barcelona VS Bayern 8-2 it was so because Barça attack was blunt compared to Bayern own both team don't have defence.

PSG VS Man city last season 2-1 & 2-2. Man city was successfully because PSG attackers lost a lot of goals that would have burried the match in first half during first leg.

PSG VS Bayern despite Lewandoski not around PSG knew what faced them that night in fact I will say LUCK on their side second leg. Thats is another example if your attackers (midfield and attack connected) are deadly forget about it.

Chelsea VS Man city. Kante stole the match and won the game for Chelsea because he made those defenders at the back to b on their feet by running against Man city players without any breathing space though their attack was dull (Werner and Havertz) if not by first half Chelsea should b celebrating with nth less than 4-0 ahead.

I rise my brother...

I later found out that it was Nketiah that threw spanners into the whole thing, including offer from C.Palace. The guy wants more money than what Brighton and Palace are willing to pay and he also prefers bigger clubs.

This is also the main reason he has refused to sign an extension with us... He wants more money than was proposed.

We cannot sell a player against his wishes. I just hope his agent is advising him right and I hope he will get better offer from bigger clubs when he walks out free from us at the end of the season.

Lol @ economist but you are right.

Its my opinion that players in a team should be categorised as either attackers or defenders. So when I say defense it includes DM, or when I say attack it includes AM and wingers.

Some people categorise into defense, midfield and attack. Depends.

I think they wanted a backup keeper who will eventually replace Leno (Leno seems to have agreed with the club to leave next season). They wanted a young British player who can play ball. Let's hope Ramsdale fits the bill. But he looked good in the Carabao cup.

Once again you did justice to an issue.

Let me point out that when players near the end of their contracts and refuse to leave, the club can force them to extend. So that if they don't want to extend, they have to move to a bidder.
