Most often, they are manufactured.
The same is in Canada, USA, even UAE.

If you want to confirm, break one and smell it to confirm.

Absolutely. Anyone earning £ 1000 before or after tax cannot survive on that without state assistance. Housing being the main thing that takes the bulk of people's income.
