When two people stay in close proximity,
there's bound to be conflict from time to time whether intentional or unintentional. Even your teeth sometimes bite your tongue within the same body so it happens. There may be hard times too due to wrong investments by the man or job loss. A woman that endures will be understanding knowing these things would pass.

Does the man expect that the marriage will continue after the slap? The marriage probably ended with that slap... her calling the cops in was just for sanity to reign after all.

As for the husband that slapped his wife, everyone that is condemning him and acting as if it is new thing are themselves guilty of it. It is a common norm. It is only when it involves certain ethnic group or religion that they distance themselves from such act in order to hang the dog.
