Why then is there no cluster of youths learning skills or businesses?

If you are familiar with the Igbo apprenticeship system (Imu ahia or Igba boy), you must have heard of the term Nwa Boy. Even if you haven’t seen one, you should have watched it in Nigerian movies. If not for anything, for the numerous dramas that follows their freedom, the many sex scandals or matreatment from Madam (their Oga’s wife). Lol

Imu ahia was basically an informal business mentoring scheme. It was a way of preserving wealth and business models. Rich and successful businessmen go to the village, they pick one young boy, they could be as young as 10 sef and take them to the city. These boys are tasked with opening the shop, cleaning wares, attending to customers, with time they graduate to making cash deposits, attending small meetings for their Oga and before you know it, he is free. He gets settled with a shop, contacts of suppliers and with time he repeats this mentorship process.

This wasn’t in buying and selling alone, you could see it in various handwork businesses- hairdressing, shoemaking, tailoring, barbing salon…etc. However, I have noticed they are not as popular as before.

Few days back I was getting my hair done and the vulcanizer by the side was doing everything alone. The customer had to ask if he didn't have a boy to help. He shouted “boy? Them still wan learn work? Even when they come, they no dey last”. This complaint is similar to that of my friend who is a hairdresser. She said they never have the patience to finish the duration of their apprenticeship. We are talking 6-18months here. Whereas Nwa Boys used to do 6-10 years and they didn’t die.

You see someone opens a shop, 2 months later it is closed. On close enquiry you will hear the apprentice that was supposed to help sustain it during the day absconded from duty.

What is wrong with youths of today? They prefer yahoo and hookup or what?

People in business, what has been your experience with apprentices?

Way back when you go to get your hair done, you will almost beg for breathing space because as the shop owner is making the hair, almost 6 girls are struggling to see what she is doing. Both the ones that smell good and the ones that don’t.

The good part was you don’t have to be giving attachment (I haven’t met just one lady that loves doing this). These days ehn, na just you and the hairdresser with her crying and restless toddler.

We will be left with those that barely know what they are doing. The young boys in SW would rather ride okada. Fast money, then they think they have arrived. They end up impregnating the girl that should ordinarily spend 2 years to learn a skill which is now a year because she done get belle.

Nwa boy wey him eye don open, na the money wey dey enter him oga akant him dey eye. After learning for some months he go run off, mumu go think say he don sabi.

Go ladipo you will see them, they don’t know jack sh*t they just want to make money.

Apprenticeship is good but for person who is okay health wise.

Imagine me a Type 1 Diabetic doing apprenticeship. How am I going to buy my regular expensive drugs. Internet marketing business is a business that can help me

It's somehow, I have seen where apprentice at a tailoring or hairdressing shop will often go to fetch water, clean the house and cook at their Oga's house by weekend

Funnily, I doubt one has to be proficient in English to make some dough. You go just hear say that boy wey dey learn tailoring or mechanic don become Yahoo boy. Even the ones who don't have PSLC. Don't bother about the girls, their boyfriends now make money so they believe they don't have to continue saying 'Yes, ma' to anyone aside their mothers.

Even teaching job wey young ones dey take groom themselves while waiting for admissions, they would tell you the salary is not enough to make their hair, not to mention the wears they put on.

No one wants to be an apprentice anymore. They want to fly before crawling, hence resorting to internet fraud. Even kids who are not even up to 13 years are preparing to join the game... This present generation is lost.

Good fact! Nice observation. My father trained a lot of "Umu boy" then in his hey days at Onitsha. Mostly from Enugu and Abakiliki.

At the peak of my father's trading business in the 80' and early 90s, we had about seven of them in our house. All were settled and were doing relatively well. There is no more youth willing to learn trade or apprenticeship. Everybody wants the fast money. The "Nwa boy" or "Umu boy" apprenticeship system helped built and distributed wealth in the Igbo families and supported the great social mobility witnessed after the unfortunate civil war.

Families that were hitherto very poor, saw their situations changed because one of their sons has been settled by his "Oga" and is now doing very well in Onitsha or Lagos. Before you say jack, he has demolished his father's old hut house and erected a befitting structure. The neighbor, seeing what Mazi Okeke's son did, will encourage his Son and even pushed him higher to meet up with his mates. Healthy and sometimes, unhealthy competition and rivalry, bestrode the Igbo communities, especially in Anambra.

Here that I reside nothing has changed I don't know where u live, even gradguate Laddies are here learning how to make hair,

When after every, oga no gree settle rather than settle the boy he's accusing him of stealing his money all those years he served.

This is one the of reasons no one wants to serve again.

Imagine wasting 10 to 12 years of your life at the end of the day you have nothing to show for it

I was given 1m to start business



My good friend I met in the market too after he served his oga for 9 years they chased him out because of 40k they found under his bed



My other guy had issues with his Oga because he bought bag to be putting sales money without telling his Oga



What boys go through in the hands of the so called Oga isn't funny at all especially when your freedom is getting close

The main problem that killed the zeel of people towards this igba boy is the wickedness from their masters.

Someone will serve them for seven good years or even more, and at last, story will enter.

From my observation, it’s because we lost our human values: honesty, loyalty etc have been replaced by greed.

Most of the “masters” don’t establish their apprentice in business when the appointed time come. It became a system “masters” used to take advantage and use their apprentices without any commensurate reward.

The younger generation have also lost values of patience, stewardship: now everyone wants to be his own man. Who can blame them in a society where trust is going extinct.

Yahoo don take over. Nobody wan learn skill again. My friend lost his apprentice the day they went to work in a Yahoo boy's house-naso him apprentice take stay there dey learn work

The truth of the matter is that, yahoo boys and the list for money has taken over the youth of today...

No youth want to work and they want to start earning big...

I have a plumber who works for us, so most times when I call him to help fix some plumbering issues, he would tell me he's busy that he would come later or the next day...

I had to ask him why he hasn't gotten a boy to assist him, he said most of these young boys of now says don't want to work, once they work for one week, they leave

No lies. The boy learning with the vulacnizer at my junction absconded. They guy is now driving Keke and playing loud music about. Once, they touch money that's the end. They don't have patience to learn a skill or to serve. They want to start making money immediately.
