Are Certificates Really Overrated? What I Saw In My Uncle's House by NoApology(m): 11:53am On Nov 19, 2021
So one of my uncles that is based overseas is billed to come home this Xmas, as such a lot of cleaning and fumigation has been going on in his house in readiness for his come back.

I went this morning to supervise the work going on there. I went inside of the stores by the car house and saw this old metal cabinet and I decided to check what's inside. Lo and behold, I found in the midst of old paper files and debris my uncle's Nigerian certificates! Omo!

Rats has eaten some portions of the certificates. I scanned through and discovered that he was,by his Nigerian qualifications, below average. This is the same man that is an internationally sort after lawyer both in the country and overseas where he resides.

This got me wondering with so many questions on my mind:
1. Are certificates really overrated?

2. Does it really come a time in our lives (apart from death) when our certificates becomes irrelevant?

3. Is it not obsolete to measure ones intelligence based on exam performances? ( My uncle would have been jobless or better still a charge and bail lawyer at best going by his academic performance)

4. And why do Nigerians perform better in almost everything when the leave this country? Are we too stringent or is a reflection of our flawed system?

You have to understand that Nigeria is a country that frustrates the dreams and aspirations of an individual, but once he is able to travel out , he flourishes. Secondly, education in Nigeria is often mistaken for intelligence, but this is not so when you go outside . Over there , what you study doesn't count , rather , it is internalization that matters .

It's an open secret that certificate in Nigeria Is not totally a measure of one's intelligence or capability.

Lol funny. Well I'm sure he didn't follow apiam way because is a citizen there. In their time traveling outside the country was not a difficult as it is today, no thanks to how messed up the country's antecedents in the global community are. .

Oh, men.

Schooling in Nigeria is one big scam. Definitely your respected uncle followed apiam way into the shores. Maybe he hid inside a container. What do I know.

By the way, rather than being idle and expecting an imaginary uncle overseas to return and gift you money as the festive season is drawing close, shouldn’t I show you a way to cash out yourself?

The jackpot is here: https://www.nairaland.com/6857552/buy-o.k-shoes-wholesale-cash

You sell, you gain, you become self-employed and self-sufficient!

Nigeria was always messed up, bro. It's just that the level of mess-up now is greater than the level of mess-up then.

In Nigeria it is about the certificate but overseas it is about what you can offer
some serious private firms in nigeria also place what you can offer above certificate.
I know someone that teach mathematics in a school who do not have a degree in math, among the applicant that he was interviewed with was a Msc statistics and a math graduate, the Msc guy was given a second chance to prepare and to be interviewed again another day, because the school was keen on employing someone with a higher qualification, but it was he that did nothing realated with math that finally land the job

Yes, certificates are highly overrated.

But mind you, a third class degree holder in 1981 has more opportunities than a first class degree holder in 2021.

I remember one interview where barr George Igbokwe (SAN) was saying that in their time, once you graduate from law school, you will see law firms begging you to come and work for them. The opposite is the case today

Yes. The tenets of the law profession made it so. Then, there were few lawyers in Nigeria with huge opportunities. Nobody cared about the class of degree you came out with.

Nigeria has been producing a minimum of 7000 lawyers for the past 8 years. In whose law firm will these young lawyers work? Remember, these young lawyers are competing with the old and experienced lawyers. The tenets of the law profession made it in such a way that the system favours old and experienced lawyers. Clients prefer these old and experienced lawyers to young and inexperienced lawyers to the detriment of the young lawyers.

Like someone one said, today is the future that these old men have been working for. The future of the young lawyers is in 20-30 years time. Unfortunately, the future of some of these young lawyers will never come.

I always say that even all those who dropped out cos they felt they were wasting their time going to school, if they go outside, school go hungry them and they will pass more citizens of those countries. The crowd alone in one tiny lecture hall with no fans or windows is enough to.make students fail. Then the sick lecturers and moving from one office to another to do what could be done from the comfort of your room, the hostel condition, the long queues to collect or drop one thing other, and so many other man made factors that affects performance. Even 80% of those who come out with good grades have to buy them. So at times those who came out with very low grade are more confident and perform better outside Nigeria school or in the streets.
