Innoson Chukwuma didn't go to school. But he's expanding his vehicle business across Africa. I even hear he's putting plans and strategies to own GTB.

Look, we all have been deceived to think that certificates matter. All you need is an idea and how to bring it to life!

And is his company made up of people who don't have certificates?

He has a research and development unit. for example....which by its nature has to be run by people with certificates.

Plus he probably sent all his kids to school to get....certificates.

1. Are certificates really overrated?

2. Does it really come a time in our lives (apart from death) when our certificates becomes irrelevant?

3. Is it not obsolete to measure ones intelligence based on exam performances? ( My uncle would have been jobless or better still a charge and bail lawyer at best going by his academic performance)

4. And why do Nigerians perform better in almost everything when the leave this country? Are we too stringent or is a reflection of our flawed system?

The certificate gave him the foundation he needed but he didn't stop there , he kept on improving himself. You become more valuable more than your certificate when you constantly improve on yourself.
And nobody goes around today with certificates . I graduated about 8 years ago and I only got issued with statement of result. The Original result is available but I don't care. Even my recent job, I got It with only my resume and the proof that i can do the work. Til today, my employer has never asked me about my credentials. ..why?....because I always deliver and I teach, render professional advice regarding my field . But it wasn't like that at the beginning, I would carry my statement of result to any job interview trying to convince.
Certificate gives birth to sabificate , and the availability of sabificate will make certificate useless except for job promotion. That your man has acquired enough experience that talks about him

Well, a country with a higher population than ours would also have a higher population of intelligent people than we do.

It goes without saying.

Good morning to you.
Japan and Korea are not as populated as Nigeria but they are making waves globally.A lot of brands are being made by these guys but few can be traced to Nigeria. The mentality of an average Nigerian is to work in an office and get the salary at the end of the month grin grin grin. The few manufacturing companies in the country are being spareheaded and run by foreigners, mostly Chinese, Americans,Japanese, Indians, Koreans etc

More population will only add to the poverty rate in Nigeria.Lol

You should be ashamed of yourself for saying this.

An uneducated man paying graduates should be an anomaly.

By the way, more than half the youths working at his factory are not educated. Make your findings. Through the IVM, heh
has and is still empowering a large chunk of youths

I doubt the youth working at his factory are uneducated. They probably have some form of certification which enables them to work there.

Plus management, research, even floor supervision requires at the very least a diploma. Car manufacturing is a specialist profession. I suspect most people working there are educated at least at SSCE level...to understand instructions centered around car manufacturing. or have something called 'guild qualifications'(those with SSCE may have a credit in automechanics...which is offered as an SSCE subject in some schools).

And as the company grows, he would need more and more educated people working there

Plus, I don;t regard an uneducated man paying educated people a salary as an anomaly. innoson may be uneducated, but he is not unintelligent.Uneducated people can create jobs just as well as the educated. Being uneducated does not mean unintelligent or uncreative.

If you are still in 100L and you are here, all I want to say is
Secure good GP from now, when you reach second semester 300L, start online business... if the course is not too challenging for you, you can be looking into online business from now on... reason why I said you should secure good gp is, when you reach 400L, you are likely to lose focus and have less scores coz you would have realized reality...

It's not only in Nigeria, it's all over the world. Doing well in School or having great certificate is not always a true reflection of true intelligence.

Omihanifa:
It's an open secret that certificate in Nigeria Is not totally a measure of one's intelligence or capability.

Yes, certificates are highly overrated.

But mind you, a third class degree holder in 1981 has more opportunities than a first class degree holder in 2021.

I remember one interview where barr George Igbokwe (SAN) was saying that in their time, once you graduate from law school, you will see law firms begging you to come and work for them. The opposite is the case today
All my lecturer in law n engineering came out with 2,2 n thirds m class. School those days was difficult bcus no internet like now information is easily gotten. My guy go tell u say question for waec don finish, just read past question Dem go repeat questions. So it wasn't easy those days as dey were at de for front

If not for indian tutorials on YouTube, one will graduate from a Nigerian University without knowing how LM35 looks like.

If you attended the kind of university I went to, be sure to graduate as a First class student if you do “la cram, la pour”. If you write based on what you understand from what you read, know that you will fail woefully or better still graduate with a second class as me. A lecture once came to class and said this “ some of you will continue to get a C in my course because you think you know more that me, I gave you a definition and you write it in your own words, how many research have you done in your life I will continue to fail you irrespective of your fine handwriting”. That moment I knew he was referring to me.
I hope to travel out of the country to an European and start my B.Sc and further

Personally I believe the Nigeria education system is kinda hard, average student in Nigeria are above average outside Nigeria.

Take for example, there was a semester I offered 12 courses with 8 practicals, I still came out with good grades even though I was broke in sapa wanted to kill m then. Plus I doing courses like calculus, circuit theory and all.

I don't think I would face such stress studying in a foreign university hence my results would even be better than what I have here.

What You saw are the Skills set I Your Uncle's Brain that made his Life and World. Those are the Skillsets that Powered his Brain and Took Him away from Ignorance and Possibly Animalistic World.

Forget about the Paper Certificate, How was his Life after those Certificates ?

That's Right !

It's not overrated or bad even in the overseas you need Certificate before you could do MSC and get some jobs
Accompanied with skills
Sadly in an economy like that of Nigeria its really sad cause the government doesn't want people to have Certificate and work with it so they make everything hard

Most of them went to school for free now they're making school unaffordable and meaningful to us so we can be less

The reason why too much theory is because Nigerian universites are poorly funded

Fees are kept too low, and the budget, even before corruption chops it is also too low.

We could improve funding for our universites...by increasing fees, and/or increasing the tax rate. But since such solutions are deemed as 'making poor Nigerians suffer'(70% of Nigerians don't pay tax because they work in the informal sector0...we rely on the diminishing sales from oil...and from the loans that the diminishing sales from oil force us to take.

Let me correct the tax percentage. I'd rather say 70% if Nigerians pay tax. I work in a micro finance and my tax is like sharing my salary into ten and giving this useless government one. My wife owns a shop and pays government both state and federal annual tax. My clients who sell and even hawk in the market pay daily dues. All transporters pay all sorts of levies to the government on daily basis. Bros we have paid our dues. There are countries who run very good education on government sponsored scholarships. Even if school fees turns one million per student in our government universities, the 1946 desktops in our computer labs still won't work coz government will not release money for data. it is same students that will be levied to finance it. A better Nigeria is more of a fairytale
