Good day nairalanders.
I will make it very brief. Please I need your advice.
I've been a nairalander since 2016 but this is my first official post.

My father is a good, noble and humble man. A successful business man. He's very proud of us (his children), we're also proud of him. We're 3. I'm 29 years of age, the eldest and only son. He make sure we don't lack anything. We all went to one of the prestigious Private University in Nigeria. I and my immediate baby sis are graduate, while last born still in 300l.

The problem is that, my father don't know how to dress, he prefer to wear faded and worn out clothes. My dad drive highlander 2014 model. If my Dad comes down from his car, you will think he's a driver to an imaginary Boss because of the way he dressed.
Blessed memories of my beloved mom May her soul R.I.P. She was always complaining and sometimes my Dad won't listen to her.

I'm a good fashion designer, my love for fashion is topnotch. I also own a laundry store and a barbing store. I've been privileged to sew some clothes for comedian Buchi which he loves so much and he promised to patronize me again.

GOD in heaven knows how many lovely, mature and soft dress I've sew and bought for my father with my money. He only wears it once and won't wear it again, there are some he haven't put on at all. He celebrated his birthday August, I bought this nice shirt 18k for him as a gift. Till today he hasn't put it on.

Please note: money is not his problem. The other day he stopped by at my store, I and my boys were working. He noticed nobody was using one of my industrial machines. He asked and I said it was faulty. He said how much? I said 170k but I'll change it soon before January....(because I just wrapped my car from corolla to ES Lexus)....Before I could say Jack... Baba don send me 200k. I ordered the machine instantly.

See what happened this morning, He got an invitation to attend a meeting. The smartest way to dress for a highly regarded man like him is native wear.
So he gave me this faded black trouser turning white to brush for him, that he wanted to wear it for the meeting...See eh, It was so annoying. I went to his room gathered the nice, starched and ironed native I could gather and I told him to select one, that I won't brush that faded trouser. He started saying ... " I'm proving stubborn and all manner things"... I'm sure our tenants could hear our argument.

Please Nairalanders. What can I do to make my Dad dress well. I plan to set fire on those faded and worn out clothes but it will look so disrespectful. I'm sure his friends have accepted his mode of dressing.
My siblings and I are tired of complaining.

Please I need an advice!!!

Leave your Dad alone. Don't burn his clothes unless you want law of nature to work against you.
What is your dad doing for a loving?

God bless you for this post. Couldn't have said it better. This habit is common to old men who have sacrificed a lot for their family at the expense of their own enjoyment that it will be difficult to change. I could easily relate with it.

Don't blame the old man.

The man prolly developed that poor dress Sense from years of depriving himself just to enable him train you guys to the level you are and give you the best. So now it has become a part of him and will be difficult to part with.

You said your last born is still in school. I'm sure pospy is still having that sense of self-denial to see her through her education. So he doesn't see your offer of new clothes as priority or the need to be fashionable for now.

Let the old man be. He became so for your sakes. That's the sacrifice of a father.

Please leave the man alone. Allow him dress as he sees fit. You didn't mention your tribe. (Not to be tribalistic)

But back in my secondary school days my best friend (till now) is Igbo is father is a wealthy businessman. If you see him he doesn't dress well as he should.

One day I summoned the courage (as a teenager) to ask him why he does that. Baba had a hearty laugh (inside me I felt I had goofed and made a fool of myself) but he replied as said as a man he doesn't have time for flamboyant lifestyle. That the money he is making is for his wife and children to live the life he can't live. Because that is were his honor lies. My respect for him grew the more.

And I have noticed this with our Igbo folks it's common amongst them. I'm not saying it's a bad thing neither is it a good thing.

So sir let your old man be. He may not be the flashing type like my own old man. (If that man dress Waka for road you go feel say na my padi) grin grin

Re: Help!!! How Do I Change My Father's Mode Of Dressing. by PHIPEX(m): 1:30pm On Nov 20, 2021
You and everyone else has been buying him cloths but no one has asked him what kind of cloths he likes.

It's one thing to buy him a " fashionable" cloth but another thing to get him the kind of cloths he's comfortable wearing.

I'll advice you ask him what kind of cloth you should get him. Inform him you want to change his entire wardrobe, he should tell you the kind of cloths he wants. Let him make the choices, use the opportunity to discard the old cloths but the choices should be made by him. He is not a child and old habit can't be changed overnight.

stop overstepping your boundaries. You can't be wiser than your dad. Please let him be and face your live. Something his better half couldn't persuade him to do is what you're struggling to achieve. If I may ask, to what end?? At this juncture you should be concerned about building your future because your dad has done his successfully. If he was given to overdressing probably because he wanted to be catching sugar babies do you think you will go to school?? Bros e don do abeg. Stop making a mountain out of a molehill.

My fathers own is worst. He uses rope as belt. His pension alone is close to 300k and we also give him money with house rent here and there he collect. He’s a very rich man yet dress like a poor man...
One day I ask him why he still wear one of his very old shoes looking so shabby. He said when I grew old I’ll know why. I’m still surprise at his response.

Your dad is doing what keeps him happy, stress-free and what gives him peace of mind.

I share the same mindset and I think I got it from my mother.

I prefer to dress quite simply, all the time. Showy clothes seem to make me uncomfortable.

As long as he isn't putting on tattared clothes when stepping out. He is a smart man. He is of the belief/knowledge that people judge other people finance by their fashion appearance at face value.

So, what he does is simply to confuse other people trying to put him in a financial class, thereby fitting in with the rich and poor and not getting unnecessary attention.

Oh God! My dad does this so much I yelled at him one day when he wore one of his very old faded cloths. Worst of all, he has new shoes too but prefer to wear his old ones. Especially his old palm sandals. And same here money is not the problem. But as soon as I realized it is what it is, I apologized to him and life goes on. Just as long as he is happy. I still convince him once in a while when I am visiting. Sometimes he listens, sometimes he doesn't. But is still try.
Long as he is happy and enjoying his life, let him bro. Cheers!

I have some advice below to help change your father

First advice organise people to beat him up on the road for his poor dress sense or. Pls disregard this advice make you no go kill am. Check out the other advice. grin

Second advice, arrange people to make jest of his clothes, just random People. Or their gossip should get to his ear about a grown man who is well to do dressing and behaving like a village man.

Third advise is get him a mirror and place it where he will see it anytime he is done dressing.

Fourth advice, get your sisters to talk to him, Fathers tend to listen to their daughter more. Especially the one he likes most.

Fifth advice is get his respected friends to talk to him or call him out on why he wears crazy clothes respectfully. He has peers or friends they will surely be able to get through to him.

Bonus advice: find out what his poison is, woman or alcohol... If na woman, arrange one babe for am make the girl dey dress am up. If na alcohol get his drinking buddies to advice him.
@the 4th advice. Omo! Sometimes e dey work oh, sometimes e nor dey work.

I'm my Dad's favourite and yes, he listens to me when I tell him to change his outfits but sometimes the way he'd be stubborn about it will even frustrate you.
Till the clothes tear, he nor go leave am. angry cry

My father no dey gree let go.
My brothers just buys and hands him packs of new singlets.
He only wears them when he has to.
And nobody dares to touch his stuff.

What I've observed is that the old singlet he wears is more loose and worn out, so it is more cool and comfortable for him to wear at home.
When he puts on a new one, it is body fitted which I think makes him quite uncomfortable.
Even me sef, my wife bought two new singlets for me but I still wear the old ones.

I had to mention you. Perhaps someone else has given you this advice. Why not buy or make clothes similar to the one that your dad loves wearing. Just make the exact type.

Do it slow and steady.

Buy him like 7 new clothes and minus 2 of his old clothes that he has not worn for a long time. He won't know how he is left with only new clothes.
