Very impressive.

Honestly I find it weird that middle class homes still use generator in 2021. Unnecessary noise and air pollution. Some are ignorant and some do not know it could be quite affordable.

This thread should be on FP.

oh you still need generators if you are a high maintenance person who wants air conditioner on. this setup can never run an airconditioner. to run an airconditioner with this setup you will need to buy like 20 deep cycle 200 amp hour batteries and then connect them together in series as well as parallel to increase voltage as well as to increase amp hour. and to buy 20 batteries will cost over 1 million naira. each battery is like 90k.

When next you are buying battery, go for made in korea , and not Korea technology." Korea technology" is of lower quality than "made in korea"

That's good, you should have bought original battery brand and not gbm. But you can still manage it
Which Battery will you recommend?

The next challenge is how to charge the battery.
I have two options, charge with light or with sun.

I thought about it. To charge with light, It will add to the consuming units. And also, the light isn't even stable. Here is sun on the other hand, completely free from baba God and it shines every single day.

I decided to opt for the green and free route, solar energy.

I bought the solar panel (150w mono) attached for 30k
You should have opt for 200-300Watts Panel, it will charge battery faster.
Just buy additional 150watts panel to it, you did well.

Total cost:

Battery : 85k
Solar panel : 30k
Inverter : 35k

Total: 150,000 naira.

I bought wires 2k

Making 152,000.

My observations so far
It takes 5 to 8 hours of sunshine to charge the battery from 0 to 100% depending on the sunlight intensity.

And guess what guys. When all the house load are on it, it lasted me up to 8 hours to use up a single charge. But when I put of the fridge, the 45watt fan and when my laptop isn't in use, it takes more than 12 hours and that's exactly what I needed.

Burning 8 to 12 hours on petrol daily will send me back to my village.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk cheesy

Bro enjoy
But have it in the back of your mind that it won’t last

Soon that ba3 would start giving you issues from 8 hours a day to 5 hours then to 3 hours before final parking off

Interesting, my fridge takes stable 100w but need about 800w starting power which lasts for less than a second. My 5kva gen will make noise for a second or two anytime I plug the fridge.

I have been sceptical about plugging my fridge on the unit despite my research and the fact that it is a power-saving unit as well.
I use less than 25% capacity of the inverter during the day, so there is enough room for the surge requirement.

Fridge defrosting is the only reason I put on the gen. What do you say?

Specs are:
Rating: 252KWh/annum
Operating current: 0.8A
Total input power: 100w
Lamp power: 10w
Frequency: 50hz
Voltage: 220-240v

Depending on your type of inverter. My sukam has overload starter and protection. There is a relay that helps start inductive loads perfectly. If your inverter is not locally made, you don't have problems.

Interesting read

With a little research you can also construct an automatic transfer switch to select your power source.

Preference will be in the following order respectively NEPA, solar power and battery power.

In that way your power supply will be uninterrupted.

The inverter is a 2 in 1. It has both solar charge controller and 800va - 500w inverter
is it possible to charge the battery with generator using the inverter incase there is no enough sunlight

Very nice post OP. And, good work on your part.
However, it's a real shame that one has to go through this just to get somewhat constant power supply. The country has failed its citizens! I mean...inverter, solar, generator, etc. just to get power. And upon it all, one may still not get enough enjoy all the benefits of constant electricity. what a country!

Op@laathero, I don't know if you will ever get this but this is what I have to say: First I'm happy you mentioned the energy from Baba God is free and guess what? It is the best. It is far better than any man-made source of energy. Ultimately, All energy sources on Earth come from the Sun. Your write-up is a most important piece of information Nigerians need as regards power issues. I have decided to go fully solar when I finish my house by the grace of God. It is a far wiser, better and far more rewarding!

How much does it cost you.?
Ovaltine:
Your DIY mentality is commendable.
I am sure it wasn't as simple as red to red or black to black but you still nailed it.

The wiring can be neater.
I suppose you ran a continuity test on the whole system and you separated your heavy load via wiring as well. You don't want a visitor to mistakenly plug a 2500w steam iron into your unit.

Oh. I see there is a socket. Does this mean an extension is sending power to your appliances?

I recently did a 3kva 24v PSW Beaver, 2x 200ah 12v Gel Ritar , 2x 300w mono installation.

I had to pay the optional installation fee despite my strong background in electricals. Its just easier to pay experts these days.

Nice and commendable. Please kindly work out the payback time by dividing the N152k by your usual daily electricity cost. If you can do that calculation, you can then start counting if you got value from the investment or not. For example, if the battery and/or the inverter pack up before your payback time then it's not cost effective
As at now, it's too early to say if it's money well spent. I commend you greatly though.
If he gets billings from whichever disco at 23k per month, in 10months that will be 230k.
He has saved probably 78k without blinking and also got light 24/7 without waiting for nepa or what ever to restore light.
If he is using gen, he just said 1kva is between 80 to 100k.
To power that gen for 10hrs, he will need to buy atleast 5litres of fuel which is approximately 1k multiply it by 30days = 30k.
Every month u must service the gen set, which will gulp additional 2k. Every 6months u must do general servicing where u change piston n rings and other stuffs.
So 30k approximately in 10 months is 300k..

Plus noise and most times heartbreak cos u will off gen, then the next morning u wan start am, it will misbehave.

If this wasn't sustainable, fashola won't be spending time doing it.
Renewable energy is the future...
Heard from 2022 germany will shut down 90percent of its coal plants..
