The competition was too much, after writing jamb twice I was offered Biochemistry.I had no choice but to accept. I ve made a vow that none of my kids will be slowed down by any nonsense Federal University.it is either private university or abroad. This thought always keep me focused on my hustle. |

othermen:You couldn't have said it better. Most so-called Nigerian federal universities are living on past glory. Private unis are taking over, while those in federal schools are sitting on their high horse and claiming hardship. In the eye of the average academic abroad, most of these schools are the same. They hardly regard schools in nigeria, but when they do Covenant and other private schools are now leading. I laugh when people say things like 'A first class in Bowen is like a third class in OAU'. I used to think like that but not anymore. Education does not have to be hard and sadistic. With all the so-called hard and sadistic evil lecturers in government unis, Nigerian universities have hardly produced anything. Most of the inventions we use today started in academic settings, but not Nigerian academic settings. Not even paracetamol, talk more of making strides in ICT or engineering. Na still oyibo man in his easy school they produce every thing from medicines to the latest tech! |

flokii:See this one! Just look at the way you are trying to water down her achievement. You think education means hardship and suffering? Oyibo that their schools are easy and their lecturers easy-going and accommodating, why do they invent everything from medicine to tech? Why haven't Nigerian lecturers and schools produced anything if they were so tough?? Which of the so-called academics in the above-mentioned schools have invented anything? Bunch of copy and paste, sadistic lecturers who only know how to go on strike, sleep with female students, sort courses and feel like demi-gods. Nonsense |

Going to OAU to study any of white house courses ( chemistry, industrial chemistry, geology) is like a camel passing through the eye of a needle. But i went, i saw and i conquered. |

This news is in no way an indication that Bowen University awards first class degree on the platter of cheapness. So many factors come into play for that class of degree to be achieved. The same person sent away by OAU on the ground of poor academic performance went to Bowen and made first class because she went and studied at Bowen with a different mind set and determination. She probably was unserious at OAU but made good use of of the second chance she had at Bowen. We should realise that most of the times, the same set of scholars who teach in government universities teach at private universities. Institutions of higher learning are places for self development upon which the lecturers have negligible influence. I have friends who graduated with second class upper division grade from public universities including THE OAU but could not make PhD grades during their MSC programmes in private universities. The truth is that most of these public universities are overrated and this affects the academic mindset of their students. An average graduate of OAU believes that he /she better off his/her contemporaries from universities from northern Nigeria but the same NUC assessed these universities severally and adjudged ABU , BUK and UNILORIN to be better than the so called GREAT IFE and the likes of UNILAG. I have been on the panels of interviewers for job more than twice and students of unknown private and State universities outperformed the federal universities graduates. Our problem most of the times is ARROGANCE OF INTELLIGENCE. The craze to attend these overrated schools keeps so many of our children as permanent Jambites at homes because they keep wasting the scores that would have been useful in other schools. What the Laws know about all these schools is different from what we think we know about them. It is surprising to know that a degree certificate issued by University of Ibadan established in 1948 is not better than the one issued by Federal University Otuoke established in 2015. Let's stop wasting our precious time chasing shadow. A word they say is enough for the wise |

Achizzy7:Poverty mentality. Which private university has 500 as tuition? Even secondary schools cost more than than. I pay close to 1million here and if you don't read you will fail! Your money isn't shit. There are nursery schools where parents pay 3 million, so why should your 500k earn you a first class? Bush boy, go out and get exposed. |

juniorstar:Bro, in the real world, all that matters is what you graduated with. Not the school (except it’s an Ivy League school). A 2.1 from Bowen has a higher opportunity than a 2.2 from UI or Unilag. We gotta get out this mindset that tough education is great for our future! |

So much beef for OAU... OAU has its flaws, no doubt... but it stands out... Those hyping private universities in nigeria are entitled to thier opinions... But I say this, if Federal Universities in the calibre of OAU are allowed to charge similar school fees as the top private universities in Nigeria, institutions like OAU would still stand out... |
