To practice social work in the UK, you need a social work degree. Without this, it is only a pipe dream. Aim to get in social work if you want to practice.

Regulation is coming to Nigeria through the Social Work Council bill in the NASS. If passed, only people who have a qualification in social work would be allowed to practice.
Pls, I am thinking of applying for a masters in social work. Though, my first degree is in public adminstration. I have volunteered with an NGO that deals with adolescent mostly girls. I also did my NYSC in an orphanage home... What are my chances of securing admission and also getting a work over there?

UI (Professional MSW).admission will be out in August/September. Apply and choose Social Welfare has your specialisation.

If you want M.Sc.Social Work, try Uniben and Nsukka.

With your volunteering experience and see service at the orphanage home, I believe you stand a good chance.

Good evening, to answer your question, if you want to get admission, yo apply to schools and have a strong SOP, and maybe they will consider you, or you do PGD in Social Work before the Masters
The person you quoted would give you full answers , by the way, which NGO did you Volunteer and which state is it??

You are correct. But migrating as a social worker to UK from Nigeria may prove extremely difficult. It is not in a shortage occupation and getting a sponsor will be near impossible as there are lot of qualified residents.
It's on the shortage occupation sir

Since you have a Master's degree in Social Work, I believe CORU would certify your credentials, but it may be conditional. You may be required to take up certain courses to get up to speed with several required knowledge in social work.
Have you checked the Assessment fee? Is it cheaper compared to other regulatory bodies in the UK? I asked because, for example, it is better to have your credentials assessed and registered in Republic of Ireland and then later register with the regulatory body in the England than to register with England's regulatory body first off.

You can not register with Social Work England with a social Work degree from Nigeria.

Sadly, no Nigerian school is listed.

In contrast to south Africa where almost 10 universities are listed

This is not right.

If anyone is ready to go with NICC next year, let's guide ourselves.

I have downloaded the form.

I have all the requirements.

£350 is what am gathering. That's the the herculean task I see from my side.

As a student in UK between 2008 to 2011, I did a social care work at Perth and St. Andrews, both in Scotland. I worked 4 hours a day during classes and unlimited hours during summer and after graduation.

My employers then, NHS Scotland, was willing to assist me with sponsorship to settle in UK but the occupation then wasn't on the list of jobs under sponsorship in UK. The conservative government of David Cameron made things difficult then.

Luckily for me, I secured a job in Nigeria and returned back. Is there a visa category for social workers at the moment? I doubt as only nurses and other health care workers are allowed in under the new visa rule. Social and care work is not there.

Yes. I am not an abroad type of person. If you check my previous posts, I haven't hidden my intention of living and making it in Nigeria. I cherish the freedom, family ties, food, friends and opportunities that Nigeria offers.

It may not be all Rosey here, but I am happy. I wouldn't know how abroad would have turned out if I had stayed but the boredom I felt in UK was killing and wouldn't want to experience it again.

If your qualification is not on the list

If your qualification is not on the list, your application may still be accepted. This could be because:

the list only has qualifications that we have assessed through past applications to join the register. It is not an exhaustive list. You may be the first person to apply with your qualification.
your additional training and experience make up for any shortfalls (of the qualification).
you are offered and successfully do a test of competence or period of adaptation.
we are confident that you met our standards based on your practical placement and choice of modules.

I hope this clears the air.

Please sir, for adaptation will they be the one to invite the applicant and look for placement for him or will that be done by the applicant? Or is their anybody here that have scale this stage before?

Several threads have been opened especially for professions that are highly sought-after abroad.
This is space for people who are Social workers in Nigeria who intend to practice in the UK and for practicing social workers abroad.

This thread would appreciate the experience, suggestions and opinions of people who are in health or related professions to enable us reach our goals in life.

Issues to discuss would be but not limited to:

• Proper visa application procedures, tips and tricks (Tier 2 General / Health and Care Visa).

• Getting registered into Social Work England and other regulatory bodies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

• Tips on finding employment, CV and cover letter format.

• Places with high employment prospect OR opportunities.

• Places to live with considerable cost of living as a new immigrant.

• Other relevant information that would be helpful.

I look forward to receiving contributions from others.
