It's most deceptive to start with 1999 to recount the HISTORY of Political Leadership of Nigeria.

Start with 1960 when three regions formed Nigeria.

The northern region has ruled Nigeria about 70% of the time till today.

why is fairness such a difficult thing

those days as kids when we go and pluck mangoes

we put all the mangoes down and we choose one after the other until it goes round if it remains it goes round again.

once u deviated from such formula u start fighting even amongst children of the same parents.

Unfortunately life is more complex than just picking fruits. I think the greatest thing we can teach ourselves and the ones to come is that life is not fair, it is not balanced. Just because you deserve something does not mean you're gonna get it, especially in politics where the last inncocent poltician died back in ancient Greece, better to focus on alliances and schemes than to believe in something imaginary like fairness and equality in politics grin grin grin

Nah, they don't, only one has the executive power, the other is just ceremonial.

It's just an attempt to add more Igbo names to the list.

My friend, in the parliamentary system of government like the one we first adopted, Prime Minister (Balewa) had executive powers while the President (Zik), was ceremonial.

So, Balewa was the Head of State while Zik was the Head of Government. Big difference. Go do your research.

The north is by far the most populous region, so it is in order.
Majority Carrie's the vote.
and that has led us to where we are. Just take a look at the country...the north has ruled forever and what we have are different bands of terrorists and extremists..poverty...insecurity..mayhem every where..

So how come Zik and Balewa, that served at the same time, are listed together? Or is this just an attempt to add more Igbo names to the list?

To really determine who should be listed, the simple question to answer is this. Which of them, employed the national ministers

Tafawa Balewa- Executive Leader with Power

Nnamdi Azikiwe -Ceremonial Leader without Power

Both of them taking orders from Sir Ahmadu Bello

You see! It is not today that marginalization against Igbos started!

At least, when next someone asks why Aguiyi Ironsi carried out that coup, I now have a valid answer!

Truth in its simplest form. Can we ever get it right in this country? Not sure but hopeful some day

the truth of the matter is that leading the pack out of the gate after independence was the SE however the SE guys in charge bleeped up and created an environment where the north will rule forever. they ( aguiyi ) destroyed regional government and then they destroyed the secession clause ( meaning you cant pulll out of nigeria if you are unhappy ) simply because they thought they will hold that power forever. you cant destroy secession clause and regional government in a country where the north is the majority. one man one vote means they will always win. and so the SE bleeped up in that regards. they consolidated the power and destroyed the ability to pull out of the consolidated power

I wonder.
Zik was never a Head of State. He was a ceremonial president without powers.

It feels good that he never ruled Nigeria.

Well, not let the country burn into pieces, but let the disintegration of Nigeria start in 2023 if justice is denied the Igbo.

The skewed and lopsided political structure created by northern military dictators necessitated rotation and zoning of the presidency in Nigeria. It's the turn of the SE to produce president in 2023.

Many people on social media think Nigeria started in 1999. Except if the word Justice does not exist in Nigeria will anyone justify dening the South East their slot in 2023 then it will become a fight to finish for all regions. That will also mark the end of any thing called power sharing in Nigeria.

If you feel rotation does not matter then both the president and his vice can also come from same region.

The real question we should all be asking ought to be:

In all these years since Independence (a whooping 6 decades), what have they all achieved?!! Why is Nigeria still so backward?!!!

Going forward, we ought to be thinking about electing someone who has the brains, guts, and vision to actually finally set the nation on the course and path of progress!

Are nigerians not tired of poverty and hardship ? Why all this noise about zoning zoning zoning. Cecil Rhodes a british imperialist forcefully imposed crude measures on south africans and built a country for them that no african country can match today. He was hated but was a british man. Today nigerians cannot even easily secure visas to visit south africa. He died at the age of 49 and was a sickly being. He wanted to construct a railline from cape town to cairo a feat I believe he would have achieved if his life was not cut short . All these noise about zoning means nothing to me as nigeria is a shithole and none of these crop of presidential candidates have what it takes to positively change the fortune of Nigeria.

Nobody marginalised anyone. Prior to 1999 anybody could take power. Power was taken not given, nobody told our generals not to be bold enough to risk their lives to seize power. Since we started choosing president through votes, how many years have Northerners ruled compared to the South?

Shut the F*** up. Since you started voting only the North has either been number one or number two. They have never missed out. You wanna tell me that was just a coincidence. I still say it for a region with the least educational level in the country they ain't doing too bad. As for the most population crap that others on here have been yapping about. your flawed thinking is in you thinking 1 man can change a nation. nigeria is the way it is not because of the president but because of the citizens. you take all 200 million nigerians to the UK and i bet you the UK will turn 3rd world under 2 days

ITS THE PEOPLE NOT THE PRESIDENT. UNDERSTAND THIS AND KNOW PEACE

It will surprise many to know that there is nothing like GeoPolitical zone in the constitution, in any law or gazette.

It is a scheme to short-change ethnic minorities.
You are either Ijaw or Edo or Efik or Urhobo
The major ethnic groups cannot for their convenience decide that Ijaw has used the slot of Urhobo or Efik. They are all different ethnicities with different interests

The same applies in North Central To the Yoruba in Kwara, Tiv , Igala, Idoma or Jukun. It is insulting to say that they were represented by Babangida or Gowon. There is no commonality

So to get better understanding ask two questions

1. How did this Geopolitical zone nomenclature enter our vocabulary
2. Does it have any legal or constitutional backing

From my perspective

It is something political parties use for their convenience but it is not the constitutionally recognized basis for Federal Character

there is no where in the world where the arid land far away from the ocean is more populous. there are rumours abound the north inflated their population. How come chad or niger doesn't have the same population

The North has been using those bogus POPULATION arguments for ages. That is why there are more local governments in the combined Kaduna and Kano states than the whole Six states in the South East combined. Since federal revenue gets divided based on the number of local governments you do the math. The Abokis got it good.

At the bolded...I hate lies..

Your lies and propaganda can never be true despite repeating it million times..

Before Gowon became head of state in August 1966, Nigeria was a federation of

1) 4 semi-autonomous Regions
2) Each Region had resource control
3)Each Region kept 50% of whatever accrued within it, paid the Federal Government 25% and the rest 25% went into a General account that all the Regions including the Federal Government could use for developmental purpose.
4)Because the 4 Regions were semi-autonomous, it made the centre week and prevented any Region from dominating another

Today, we have

1)36 states that have little or no resource control
2) A powerful Federal government that now pays the states
3)Fiscal federalism is dead

How did we get here? It was Gowons promulgation of Decree 14 on the 27th of May 1967 that caused it all. It was this same decree that forced Ojukwu to declare the Eastern Region a seperate country called Biafra 3 days later and this led to the war. It should also be added that decree 14 was a violation of the Aburi agreement that both Gowon and Ojukwu signed in Ghana.

Decree 14, abolished the 4 Regions, replaced them with 12 states, took away resource control, reversed fiscal responsibility and made the federal government all powerful

It was seen for what it was by Ojukwu and the Eastern Region, a calculated attempt by Gowon and his Northern cohorts to dominate everyone.

Suddenly, the North that was one Region, had 6 states while the South that was 3 Regions had to share 6 states between them. This effectively made the North the dominant partner

Subsequent military administration's led by Northerners subdivided the 12 states Gowon created, and gave the North more states and local governments than the south

Today, the North that was one Region has overwhelming advantage over the South that was 3 Regions

1) The North has 19 states while the south has 17

2)Of the 109 Senators in Nigeria, the North has 59 while the south has 50

3) Of the 360 house of rep members, the North has 191 while the South has 169

4) Of the 774 Local Governments in Nigeria, the North has 419 while the South has 355

This undue advantage given to the North, starting with Gowons decree 14 which changed the structure of Nigeria, is what led to war and created the mess Nigeria is in today

Know your history..
