Vladimir Putin has ordered a ban on foreign exchange loans and transfers by Russian residents to outside of the country, the Kremlin said on Monday, in retaliation for economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West.

The Russian president also signed into law an order for exporting companies to sell 80 per cent of their foreign exchange earnings made since 1 January on the market.

It comes as Foreign secretary Liz Truss said Britain was set to lock Russia’s Sberbank out of sterling clearing and slap sanctions on three other banks. There will be a full asset freeze on Russian lenders within days, she added.

The UK government also advised citizens against all travel to Russia and ordered its ports to ban any vessels that are Russian as it increased pressure on Moscow.

The Russian rouble plunged sharply in early Monday trading and the central bank more than doubled its key rate to 20 per cent in an emergency move after the West imposed further economic sanctions over the weekend.

This included the Western decision to freeze Russia’s hard currency reserves in an unprecedented move that could have devastating consequences for the country’s financial stability.

Katya, a resident from Moscow, told The Independent: “My Russian bank card doesn’t work anymore. Also I wanted to exchange the rubles I had in cash but the exchange rate is so horrible that there’s no point. I can use them for toilet paper now.”

Which swift will they use to transfer the money in the first place?

Like Putin is drunk on vodka. He has forgotten Russia has been isolated!

USA has cut ties with Central bank! Switzerland, who does not interfere in world politics has started raining it own sanctions

Putin should know it’s over!

You can’t fight United people who share common goals

When he knew they are already banned from doing that through Swift exclusion. Seems this Putin is a tragicomedian. Let him wait until FIFA bans Russia then he will ban his citizens from playing football. Sooner than he expects, his citizens will rise massively against him, then coup will happen.

I thought you have a bit of sense, but nothing upstairs like your defeated hero Putin.

After they have been removed from SWIFT, how do you expect them to transfer money to another country?

He will soon learn like Hitler his elder brother.

In this global village? It will be circumvented if this news is true.

I have noticed that most of these 'putin updates' are from UK platforms and that is making me suspicious if these are the true state of things inside Russia.
I will trust a German news platform more on Russian news.

Story.

Not in retaliation of any sanction, but to protect the weakened economy and stop capital flight.

Sending Ruble abroad (buying dollars) without earning more will further weaken the Ruble.

Putin e-dogs are not intelligent after all.

America played Putin like a puppet, isolate and turn Europe against him without risking the lives of their troops. grin

America was never going to admit Ukraine into NATO, it was a ploy to get putin emotional, so sanctions can be issued and economy crumbled. Putin let his ego get the better of him grin grin grin

We are not saying the same thing.

I don't have time to argue with a non-economist. Stop Russians from sending payment abroad is to conserve their forex. USA has frozen half.

The recent Russian policy is not a puntive measure.

It's like telling Nigerians not to make cross-border payment to punish USA. Nigeria will only make that policy to defend the Naira against USD in the face of depleting FOREX.

Are you aware US national budget is 3.5 times bigger than the entire Russian economy?

USA defence budget alone is about half of Russian economy.

The world is being unfair to Russia.
All she trying to do, is protect herself.

In the UN council meeting, a minute silence is held for ukranians who lost their lives so far BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RUSSIAN FORCES WHO ARE BEING AMBUSHED AND KILLED!
FIFA has always said they don't mingle into politics, so why are all the sports outlets banning Russia.
Put Biden in putins's shoes.... Will it take a threat to its borders lightly?

Hopefully in the coming weeks "someone" will be brave enough to gather enough voices to support Russia.
The world cannot be at the foot of one country forever, power must change hands!
